A question of spelling

A question arose in our book club discussion of A Moveable Feast, specifically about a sentence in a discussion with the bookstore owner ( p 37 of original version). In the first version, it says, “Don’t read to fast,” she said.
Our discussion questioned if this was a typo, but we decided it was to be read as if fast is a verb. So, it becomes “Don’t read [in order] to fast.”

HOVEVER, those who read the revised version saw where the sentence had a been changed to “Don’t read too fast.”

So, which should it be? Was it just sloppy editing in the first version or misinterpretation in the revised version? I can’t find any mention of this anywhere. Admittedly, it’s a small sentence within the scope of the book, but now I’m really curious.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
