Karen | 351 comments Hello ! Happy July all : )
Any suggestions for our monthly buddy read during the months of Nov and Dec 2018?

message 2: by Tania (last edited Jul 04, 2018 02:34PM) (new)

Tania | 560 comments Mod
I have 2 R C Sheriff books Still to read, Greengates and The Fortnight in September, if anyone would be interested in one of those.
I think I'm going to London next weekend, so I will try to pop into the bookshop if there are other suggestions that I can get there.

message 3: by Susan (new)

Susan | 236 comments I'd love to read Greengates. Miss Buncle Married might be fun for a lighter read.

message 4: by Karen (new)

Karen | 351 comments Hello Tania and Susan : )
I think Greengates would be a great choice for November too.
Anyone read The Home-Maker by Dorothy Canfield Fisher?

message 5: by Susan (last edited Jul 05, 2018 07:53AM) (new)

Susan | 236 comments I’ve read The Home-Maker, and it could make for a very interesting discussion. I also really liked The Fortnight in September, but I think the group read it recently, in the past year or so.

message 6: by Karen (new)

Karen | 351 comments Hi Susan, i think The Home-Maker would make interesting discussion too.You have any other titles you really been wanting to read?

message 7: by Tania (new)

Tania | 560 comments Mod
I have The Home-Maker, but haven't read it. Love the idea of Miss Buncle Married, too. Happy to read whatever the group chooses.

Greengates is at the top of my list. Sometime, I’d like to read Fidelity by Susan Glaspell—since it’s out of copyright, at least in the U.S. it can be found online as well as in print. ( And more of the Miss Buncle saga—I was excited to find my public library has all these available as ebooks.). But as Tania said, I’m happy to read what the group chooses

I can get the second Miss B book from the library.

message 10: by Karen (new)

Karen | 351 comments Hello all : )
I've checked with Gina and she agrees that
-Greengates by RC Sherriff for Nov 2018
-The Home-Maker by Dorothy Canfield Fisher for Dec 2018
will be perfect choices.
I do hope everyone is happy with the choices
Karen : )

message 18: by Toast (new)

Toast (hotbutteredtoast) | 55 comments Either of the Sheriff books which are fab. Or the Buncle books which are super too. Or one of the short stories from the PB collection ?

Toast

message 22: by Karen (new)

Karen | 351 comments Hello Toast : )
Do you use the app or desktop version?
Click on more upcoming reads on the home page and you will see the list : )
I find using Goodreads on desktop better than on my phone.
Hope this helps
Best Wishes Karen

Aqsa wrote: "Little Women and The Forty Rules of Love"

Hi Aqsa.
This group is for reading Persephone Books and they haven't published those ones. I did love Little Women, though.
I have a copy of The Blank Wall, so I would be keen to read that. Perhaps Miss Buncle Married.

message 27: by Aqsa (new)

Aqsa (her_747) | 8 comments Oops sorry.

Thanks Tania :)

message 28: by Toast (new)

Toast (hotbutteredtoast) | 55 comments I love the above suggestions of RC Sherriff, the 'Ms Buncle's' and 'The Blank Wall'. And after a random look at my shelves (without thinking of dates or anniversaries or anything like that) and without being fully aware of what has already been read, I came up with the following purely because I thought they'd get people talking:
High Wages - Dorothy Whipple
any short story from the PB book of short stories
Cheerful weather for the wedding - Julia Strachey
The Children who lived in a barn - Eleanor Graham
Miss Ranskill comes home - Barbara Eurphon Todd
The Woman Novelist and other stories - Diana Gardner
Tea with Mr Rochester - Frances Towers
Any of the Mollie Panter-Downes collections
I would suggest my fav Vere H's 'A few eggs etc' but no one has a month of Sundays to read such a brick of a book over the Christmas and New Year period.
Any use??????
Toast

You're welcome. Here is a list of the Persephone Books. https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2.... Maybe there will be something you'd like here.

Toast,of the books you named, I already have Miss Ranskill Comes Home and Minnie's Room: The Peacetime Stories of Mollie Panter-Downes by Mollie Panter-Downes. I wouldbe happy to buy others if people are interested though.

message 31: by Susan (new)

Susan | 236 comments Lots of good suggestions! I’m very interested in Heat Lightning and Miss Buncle Married. And just wanted to add, Toast, that I loved Few Eggs and No Oranges, too — it would be hard to fit in one month though — (as is Mollie Panter-Downs War Notes) — maybe those could be done over 2 months when/if the group wants to read them?

message 32: by Karen (new)

Karen | 351 comments Thanks all for the suggestions , some really great reads here

Guy | 2 comments Great. I was hoping I'd find Young Anne on the kindle but it doesn't seem to be available in that format yet.

Karen | 351 comments Hi all ,
Books for Jan-April 2019 have now been added to the 'Upcoming Reads' , thanks for your help and hope you are happy with our choices !

message 37: by Susan (new)

Susan | 236 comments Looks like a great mix of reads coming up!

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) | 22 comments Karen—I cannot locate “Upcoming Reads.” I must be blind! Can you help?

message 39: by Tania (new)

Tania | 560 comments Mod
Hi Lynn.
I think you can only access them through a laptop/desktop. It doesn't appear to be available using the app. There is a tab below the book showing on the right saying 'more upcoming reads'
The new books are.
Jan - Miss Buncle Married
Feb - The Blank Wall
March - They Were Sisters
April - Despised And Rejected.

I'm particularly looking forward to 'Miss Buncle Married' and 'They were Sisters', myself.

message 40: by L Y N N (new)

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) | 22 comments Thanks! @Tania! Didn’t even consider I might need to get on the computer and look! 😀 I hope to be able to join in as of the new year. Egads! I can’t believe yet another year is almost done and gone!

message 41: by Susan (new)

Susan | 236 comments I can see the upcoming choices on iPad — go to group home, and the link to see more upcoming books is also under the book on the right. Don’t know if this works on other platforms

Hi Lynn, hope you are able to join in .
Thanks Tania, a few people have said they can't see 'upcoming reads' on the app and only through desktop/ipad.
I'm looking forward to 'They Were Sisters' too

message 43: by Veronique (new)

Veronique | 90 comments I’m looking forward to the last two titles too.
Miss Buncle was lovely, and Blank Wall, one of my first Persephone, turned out to be pretty amazing.

message 44: by Karen (new)

Karen | 351 comments Happy February All !
Any suggestions/ideas for our choice of books for the months of May,June and July 2019?

message 45: by Susan (new)

Susan | 236 comments As we were saying on another thread, The Hopkins Manuscript by R. C. Sherriff might be fun to read together.

message 46: by Karen (new)

Karen | 351 comments Susan wrote: "As we were saying on another thread, The Hopkins Manuscript by R. C. Sherriff might be fun to read together."
Hi Susan, hope you are well?
I agree, The Hopkins Manuscript is one i've had on my Tbr list for a while and I love R.C.Sherriff's writing.

message 47: by Veronique (new)

Veronique | 90 comments I’m for The Hopkins Manuscript too. Looking at the previous comments, Miss Ranskill Comes Home is another one I like the sound of (well, pretty much the whole catalogue). Virginia Woolf’s diary (A Writer's Diary: Being Extracts from the Diary of Virginia Woolf) as well as Tirzah Garwood’s autobio (Long Live Great Bardfield: The Autobiography of Tirzah Garwood) look great but perhaps too long for one month...

One of the new Persephone coming out in April will be from Elisabeth De Waal, so I wondered if you’d be interested in her other title, The Exiles Return.

message 48: by Tania (new)

Tania | 560 comments Mod
I'd be up for 'Miss Ranskill', too. I'd also try to get hold of 'The Hopkins Manuscript'. I'll wait and see what is picked before putting in another order.

message 49: by Suki (new)

Suki St Charles (goodreadscomsuki_stcharles) | 13 comments I would like to read The Expendable Man by Dorothy B Hughes. I see that the group read it back in 2013-- I don't know if you do rereads or not.

message 50: by Susan (new)

Susan | 236 comments We have reread books in the past, especially if it’s been awhile.
