There feelings about their "sins" and the way they respond to their guilt is very telling.
Celaena more or less went into complete denial and rejected her real identity. Now she seems willing to accept who she really is and this is part of her atonement.
I found Ren's character particularly interesting here with his drowning his guilt. I'm not sure that I like or respect him. He has a long way to go toward proving himself.
