✩ Tales from the library was started in one of my other groups. Everyone would love to have the library system I have. But I also would love to hear about other libraries and also about bookstores and your adventures in them.
I have gone back and collected some (all) the old stories of "Tales From the Library" and included them here for those of you that have missed them the first time.

Ace stated on Unwrap the Cocoon (Weekend posts) that I should tell Tales from the Library. With that in mind I thought I should first tell the tell about the library itself. But that tell would be better told on chat instead of unwrap. One of the reason's was it would be interesting to hear from each of you about your local libraries. So post your tells about your library :D
First off here is the Pike's Peak Library District new home page https://ppld.org/
And their catalog page (which is where I usually go to first to get to my account) https://pikp.ent.sirsi.net/client/en_...
The library district comprises of 16 branches plus the interlibrary system to draw from for hard copy digital and audio books, DVD, magazines etc. I do most of my library needs online from requesting books to scheduling meeting/study rooms. So when I do my Sunday library trip I usually hit the desk to do any check ins that I need to do, go to the reserved/holds shelf and pick up any books waiting that I have been notified were waiting then go to the self serve check out. I am usually average being in the library around 5 minutes. Even though I am in the library such a short time I know most of the librarians (except the new ones).
Stats
You can check out up to 100 books, a book check out has 3 weeks and up to 3 times per book (9 weeks) before you need to come in and check it in before checking it back out if there hasn't been a hold placed on it then you need to check it in and place another hold for yourself if you want the book again. There have been times that I have run up to 100 book limit but I now like to keep it at the 30 book range and start bring back books at the 50 book range. Realize I have research books in that total and not all are fictional books. Digital books go on a different system. I don't know the amount limit or the time limit as I don't get to many books in digital format.
Now the wonderful thing about ppld is that there is a grace period of 3 days. Meaning that when you go over the due date you are fined 10 cent a day per book but if you return before the third day you don't have to pay any fine but on the fourth day you have 40 cents due. What really great about that is you have to return because there is a hold on a book that you want to continue reading/having you can keep checking to see if someone else has returned a copy of the book during those 3 days and maybe not have to give up the book quite yet. I also use this as a way to get books that I needed to pick up on another day than Sunday working it for its due date on Sunday there by limiting the number of trips to the library. This grace period also helps when the weather and roads are rotten.
There are several stations (around 20) for computers and laptop checkouts at the branch I usually go to. I haven't used any of their check out laptops but have used the free wifi.
I started going to the Fountain branch that is about 15 minutes south of me but have changed to the Sand Creek branch that is 15 minutes north as it is in the direction of town that I usually do my shopping, movies and whatnots on Wednesdays and Sundays. This branch is one of the branches that is in a shopping center. But has a really nice interior. One of the reading rooms even has a fireplace. It isn't very big but when you have all 16 branches to draw from it's doesn't have to be.
A couple of years ago the new 21st Century branch open up. It is the largest branch in it's own building. but it has more than just books. Like 3D printers, recording studio, and more specialize equipment than I know about. This is the branch that Pike's Peak Writers have their Write Brain Workshops that I go to every now and then. Also the library holds its Mountain of Authors there now. This is at the far north of town.
PPLD doesn't take donations for itself. If you donate a book/dvd/etc to the library it goes to Friends of the Library and it gets sold in the monthly sales. Which is one of the times that I spend a little more time in the library. It use to be on the way in/out of the library and the main desk but now at Sand Creek it is in the large meeting room in back. I have found some sweet deals on books.
Well, that's all I can think of at the moment about my local library. What you library like?

I thought of another reason I have a high number of books from the library. As I like to read a series back to back I usually wait until I have the whole series before starting to read. It's a drag that I usually get book 1 after all the other books. It is a juggling act but I rather that then skipping a book in the series.

I'd changed my usual Sunday for Saturday including going to the library a day early. It just worked out better this week to do so. My Tales from the library included both this and last weekend trip, Usually when I go to the library I am the work horse in hauling both mine and my mom's books into and out of the library. Doing the pick up, drop off and check outs. Because I was (and still am) recovering last weekend my 82 year old mom did it instead. We didn't want to take a chance on damaging the torn muscle again and starting the healing over. Now this weekend I at least took care of my own books. When I got back to the car my back let me know it wasn't happy (I did have most of July's reads to pick up)

Went to a presentation on water for the area. Mostly for info on water barrels. In Colorado it was illegal to collect rain water because of all the other states that receive water from our water shed. But last year it was passed to allow them. We hope to have 2 in the back yard when we finally are able to work on it. We can have up to 2 barrels and 110 gals. Which made seeing the whole. Which was an hour and half. I am glad it wasn't longer as I was getting to the point of having to leave because the chairs weren't the most comfy.

So here is my "Tales From the Library" this week.
Wednesday was our monthly shopping day around town. I had a few books that required me to bring in to renew so it was to be a quick stop because of all the other places we were going too and hopefully before the afternoon rainstorm hit. The library has two sets of doors to enter and they have a table and an easel for upcoming events in between the two doors. An as I walked through there on one of the easels was a free workshop for Saturday for Zentangles. But we needed to registered for it. So when I got to the desk I said I would like to registered for the workshop for 2. I ended up having to use both my and mom's library cards and the hold thing took like 15 minutes to get all the required info inputted into the library's computer.
I got back out to the car and told mom what I had done not knowing if she had anything going on Saturday. Luckily she didn't and thought it a great idea.
We were the first to pick our seat (center table at the back as it had the clearest view of the white board. A certified zentangle teacher was holding the class. We made 2 tiles and I used 10 of the 11 tangles presented.
Here are the 2 tiles I did during the class. They are only 3 1/2" by 3 1/2"

Tales from the library from last Sunday.
I had a couple of books that I needed to turn in so I could recheck out. (There's a limit of checking out 3 times before you have to bring the book back in - so they can see that you still actually have it - before you can renew the book) This happens to me as I like to read books back-to-back in a series and I don't like starting the series until I have the whole series in hand. Otherwise, it's a pain. I'll have every book but book 1 and then when I get book 1 someone will want the book at the end or in the middle. All-in-all it works out.
When I got to the library there was a power outage from a car accident. I was able to drop off books I was returning and I was able to pick up books (they did the old fashion way of doing the check out with pen and paper and inputted when the power came back on) that I had on hold for me and Mom. But I wasn't able to do the turn in to check out books as the librarians were unable to check to see if there were any holds on them through the computer. Luckily with all the books I want to check in and check out I hadn't used the grace period and was able to do them on Wednesday. Well, that night as I watched the news the library was shown and I thought "Oh, they are going to mention the power outage". Mmm, no. Turned out later on in the day someone had noticed a couple of bags/packages sitting and had to call in the bomb squad. Turned out someone just sat down their bags while waiting for the power to come back on or to look through the bookshelves. Got all squared away, except on Wednesday I found out one of the books I picked up for Mom didn't get inputted into the computer.

I was thinking if there's a Tale from the Library and all I could come up with is that the library branch has just finished a remodel of adding a sound recording studio and taking the lounge and making it into another large meeting/workshop room. They took all the upholster seating and spread it throughout the library that was in the lounge around the fireplace. I think I only used the space before once as it was fairly open. Now the seating is more cozy and I think will work better. Plus, they got rid of the vending machines. In the new library branch that open about 3 years ago, they have a snack shop that has someone to make fresh food which is nicer than vending food. Food and drink is allowed in the meeting rooms so if your group is having a celebration you can have cake or cookies or snake while working on projects.

Tales from the Library
I have mention in passing the newest branch in the library system here in town. It is called 21st Century. It took a couple of years to build. It is in the north--other--end of town. So I don't visit very often. Write Brains are now held there. The whole idea of this branch was to take into consideration the changing times of books, data, computers, media, learning and research. Most of the library's main offices are now located in this branch. It was the branch that had the 3D printers, sound studios first in the district. But they have so much more like sewing machines. There is a whole area that's not hard copies books (audio, digital on CD's) several meeting rooms with happenings events all the time. There's a cafeteria/snake/coffee shop in case you are at the library for several hours.
21st is so large I haven't seen everything yet. I usually am just on the top floor for Write Brains every few months or the yearly Mountain of Authors. The branch I go to is smaller and cozy. I know most of the librarians that have been there for a time, that's why I tend to stick with it (it's only 15 minutes away too). That's why I only hit 21st about 6 or 7 times a year for the stuff that doesn't make the rounds through the different branches. I do most of the library stuff (requesting and renewing hard copy books/DVD/audio, keeping track with my account and with emails, request a book purchase, interlibrary loan, downloading the digital) online. Which actually gives me access to all the branches. Request a book and if it is available it is ready to pick up at my branch in a week or less.
21st opened a couple of years ago. With it's success some of it's perks are making their way into the smaller/older branches. Like the sound studio and craft area renovate in the branch I visit most often.

Going to the library today (Saturday), because I won't be able to go tomorrow. Talked to one of the librarians that I know about the Mistletoe series (Yes that is my Tales From the Library for the week).

Have I got a Tales from the Library for y'all. Last March the library gave a library fine removal. I usually have a few bucks a year in fines because of bad roads or weather or something comes up. So I got my balance put to zero. I was back up to $1.60 when I asked about going on vacation for mom. In that discussion I found out that the library has decided to follow the trend throughout the nation and to totally go fine free thereby becoming a friendlier place. I think it also has to do with the available of books and research online and in digital. You will only be charged for lost or damaged books now. So I got my $1.60 forgiven. I don't have to do my usual of paying it off before the New Year (and starting with a clean slate).

Tales from the library. Have taken care of the library (expect what I want to be done online tomorrow just to keep things in my Sunday order) as the library will be closed. All the books that need to be returned have automatically had their due date moved to the 26th. I will take care of them instead on Wednesday's around town day (it's the 27th, remember I have a 3 day grace period). I'll have to make adjustments for next week too as the library will be closed for New Years. Will be checking out what books I'll put in a request soon for next month's reads.

Tales from the library
I got notified that a book I requested from the interlibrary has arrived. It was a book that was in the system but after requesting it for this month's challenges, the book's data came up as not having any -- data that is. So the book must have been lost. So I went to interlibrary loans. I got it just in time before the month is over but I still have 1 and 1/2 books to read that I had planned on to end the month. Seeing I didn't know when this interlibrary loan would come through. So I may or may not get it read before the deadline and may have to read it next month.

Tales from the library: Not sure if I am going to my branch library on Sunday or not. Maybe will be working in the front yard. I picked up my Interlibrary loan I mention last week and it was Sea Gypsy but when I got home it was the wrong author. So I returned it with noticed that the author needed to be corrected. I also found out that the library is buying a new copy. I just have to wait until it comes in. It wont be in time for last month's challenge. But I still want to read it so I'll wait :D

Tales from the library: Am thinking of going to the big new branch 21C tomorrow to check out the camcorders that they have for checking out. Will also do my usual Sunday stuff at both 21C and Sand Creek (have several books to pick up). Doing the library tomorrow will free up time on Sunday--to just lay around or less time around town.

Tales from the library: I went to the big new branch (21 C) yesterday for their Media Studio orientation that one has to take before they can use and/or check out equipment. They are one of 3 libraries in the country that checks out equipment over $200. Camcorders, lighting, mics, etc. 21 C and my little branch both have sound studios. I am thinking of doing the camcorders. Monday I am going to see if I can fit into the editing class if there is a no show (if not they will set up a special one on one for me-nice) and on Thursday I am going to take their Lighting class. All of the class were/are bloody early for me but so far worth it. I still need to do my weekly library stuff tomorrow if I don't decide to hold over until Monday. Smoke has been heavy again so I'll see how much I want to be outside.

I found out that my local library Sand Creek has 2 computers that also have Premiere on it so I won't have to drive to the other side of town whenever I need to use Premiere. but I plan on doing some computer time at 21C after the class on Monday.

Today, I went to the library (instead of tomorrow, will stay in instead). Finished reading a couple of Interlibrary loans, waiting for the 3rd and final book in the series still. Was told it was available today but it was the wrong book. So I had to request it again.

So my Tales from the library will take on a Saturday favor most likely. Not sure we will go anywhere tomorrow though as we have had to be out and about several times this week already and next Wednesday is our monthly shopping.

It was great fun and with most cooking classes, the best part was tasting the food. The class showed me some tricks to using the InstaPot, gave us the recipes that were made that night and I am looking forward to making something this winter.
Interesting note, I was one of about 6 people who own an InstaPot and have never used it. 3 other people had only used it to make one thing. And amazingly, 10 people didn't own an InstaPot. I don't know if they were interested or just wanted free food.

★ A New Tales From The Library
As some of you know I moved and had to leave, the most wonderful library system :-( At present we are temporarily located and have 2 library systems to use one for the city and one for the county. The city system comes close to Pikes Peak Library District.
The good news is it is getting closer. The bad news is that the branch I am closest to is closing down for a year to do renovations to make it more like PPLD. They are expanding their square footage and adding a make it space. As of today I can no longer place my hold to be deliver to Shadle and can no longer drop in and drop off books as of the 22. The temporary location is about 5 more miles away and in the mall. Yikes. And will not be available until the beginning of next year (2 to 3 weeks to be closed).
So my tale is this: We went on a library tour on Saturday. We chose Saturday as Shadle and one other branch are the only ones that are open on Sunday and Monday for the city's system. I don't know the hours for the county branches yet. I have to check that out tomorrow as I will be at one for my WP meeting.
We check out 3 branches that will work best for us--Hill Yard, South Hill a bit farther away but on the way to Spokane Valley, and Indian Hills. We will go with Indian Hills, what can I say other than becasue it is the prettiest (I know I'm being snobbish I have pics that I'll post at some point on IG) and not much farther than Hill Yard. Plus, it will allow us to check out that part of town which we have yet to do. When we are going to the Valley or need Sunday or Monday, we will go to South Hil.
In a month when the temporary location is open we'll check it out and most likely will change to it even dealing with the mall parking. We still don't know if we'll end up somewhere around Spokane or 3 other areas yet. We are going through our Pros and Cons list to help narrow down to the place to stay.
Oh, we also hit BN. I had to return a book to the library because it had a hold on it and I decided to buy it and wanted to see if I could what my options were besides Amazon. BN didn't have it so I got it from Amazon and for free so it was the better choice.

Hi all and Happy Holidays :D
I got a notice that I had a package in at the UPS box. Mom said she had nothing coming in and my next monthly order isn't suppose to be in until like Dec 24 (which I most likely will leave until after the 25th). So that unknown package puzzled me. until I remember the book, I won on GRs a few weeks ago. So on our around town I had to go and see if the package was or wasn't my book. In a way it wasn't and in a way it was. The package was bigger than it needed to be (that happens sometimes) and felt like there was more than a book inside. I opened it up in the store (I all most always do to give them the stuffing to use again) and low and behold it was the book but it had the other 2 books in the series with it. I not sure if they said that the series was included in the giveaway or they decided to sent the whole series as a surprise. It doesn't matter as it was a nice surprise either way. That makes 5 or 6 books I gotten from a GRs giveaway. So GRs giveaways do have books that are given away. Now I just have to figure out when to read them. What a nice holiday present. Oh, the series is Trylle by Amanda Hocking (Switched (sounds like a changling), Torn, Ascend.
We were going to do a couple of other little errands before the library but it was getting a bit late and I want to make sure I got to the library today. We decided to check out another road for going to the library and found the best way up this hill nearby. While there I verified that the library will not be open again until the 26th. Normally it is closed Sunday and Monday and will be close on Christmas Eve and Christmas. Which is why I wanted to be there before it close today. Because that is almost a whole week it will be closed, and I had books to pick up before the 26th, and some to drop off too.
With the moving and computer issues this past year I didn't really read any children's books. So When I was going around checking out the temporary library branches, I picked up several children's - picture books (I love the art work and some of the lessons in them). I feel like I have caught up with the lack of the wonderful world of kids books for the year.

Tales from the library: Shadle branch is now closed for over a year and the temp has opened up in the mall. It is small, parking a bear and the drop off is in the mid-back of the store. So we changed our branch to the Indian Hills. A very nice branch even through it is a bit out of the way and closed on Sunday and Monday. If we really have to go to the library on those 2 days will head to South Hill.
I planning on putting some pics of Indian Hills on my Instagram account this or next week.

And congrats on winning a series of books!!
I am too cheap to buy books, so I use the library and it is also nostalgic for me, because my father took us to the library every Tuesday for most of my childhood. (I just realized a few months ago that I still go to the library on Tuesday.)
My mother took me to Storytime as a toddler and I learned to write my name so I could have my very own library card. I took my children to Storytime when they were toddlers too.
My children have many happy memories of activities at our local library, including decorating Gingerbread houses at Christmas time, LEGO building, Summer Reading programs, prizes & end-of-summer parties, attending & performing in puppet shows, and all kinds of crafts.
Thank you Benjamin Franklin for the public library system!!
It is a bit sad as I could have walk or ride my bike to Shadle and I don't think I'm up to even riding my bike to Indian Hills cause of the Hills part. We will most likely not be in the area when Shadle reopens bigger and better. They are adding make it spaces and will be more like the fabulous one in CS. but I knew I was leaving an excellent library when we moved. but overall the Spokane system is not to far off from what we had. It no longer has fines and they have what they call library of things (just found out about it) and they do have camcorders and other cool toys. The issues is you check out for 3 weeks instead of 1 and no scheduling and I am 9th in line with only 2 camcorders in the system. That is around 4 months to wait or maybe longer.
I had Sunday and Wednesday as my days I may or may not go. But have changed to Tuesday and Saturdays for now.
Libraries are great for so many things. They are expanding in what they offer with the change of times.

I must confess that I have been fully abusing the lack of fines. My account has been locked 3 times in 2021, which means my fines were over $4, which happened because a book was 2 weeks over due and declared lost.
I haven't been reading as much and I don't feel like writing book reviews. So I wait until the book is overdue then I procrastinate writing my review.
There is a resolution for me for 2022.

Love not having fines. And it is easy to sometimes just hold on to the book longer but for me I usually am able to renew up the 3 times online. For me it's when I have to return (after 3 times renew or someone has a hold on it) when I am in the middle of the book and only have a day or two to finish reading it. Just hate to have to stop and restart and not be in the flow of the story.
With me moving to a new area don't know all the new rules for the libraries. So I might be back to fines. Haven't had them for almost 10 years between to 2 library systems.
Hopefully you'll get back into the reading mood soon. This year it takes me longer to read a book as a general rule. So I totally know how you feel.
