Again, I'm just going to write whatever my hands type.

I looked around nervously. No one was in sight. I wiped sweat from my brow and unstuck a lock of mousy brown hair from my forehead. I finished stuffing the old, dusty book bag I had found in the attic, with the tools I needed. I again looked out nervously from behind the tool shed and up at the brilliant moon shining in the night sky, silently cursing myself for my stupidity. I was in plain sight for anyone who looked hard enough. I just had to choose this night, out of all nights, to go digging.

I brushed another lock of curly hair from my mouth and zipped up my bag. I slung it over my shoulder and looked about me one last time. After convincing myself it was safe, I crept out from behind the shed and scurried across the slightly yellowing lawn. I stopped, gasping for breath, in the left corner of my backyard. I quickly peered through the cracks in the wooden fence that surrounded the yard, and, after determining it was safe, I flipped open the one loose board and squeezed my way through.

I carefully shut the board behind me and started off on the small, marshy trail that led to the woods behind my house. I shifted my bag up my shoulder as I walked. Once or twice I stopped and crouched down, waiting for a moment to see if anyone was following me.

After the third time, I shook my head and got up. I was fine. No one saw me, and no one was following me. With that in my mind, I began again along my secret path, wishing it would hurry up and get me to where I needed to go. It took so long, sometimes.

Finally, it ended at the familiar large boulder. I sighed, and set my bag down. I crouched and unzipped it. Pulling out the small shovel and a tiny leather pouch, I crept over to the other side of the huge rock.

I paused momentarily. No one was in sight, and yet... Inhaling deeply, and narrowing my eyes to slits, I turned quickly, and with a bang and a thud, a small boy fell out of a nearby bush.

"Shoot." I pocketed my slingshot and crept toward the unmoving body. I nudged it with my foot, and just as I was about to dismiss it as unconscious, the scrawny boy jerked up his head and said, "Hello! What are ya doo-ing?"

I shrieked and jumped back. "Oh my god! You nearly gave me a heart attack! Wait, why are you following me?" I glared suspiciously at the boy as he stood and dusted himself off. "Sorry about the creeping up on you and following you stuff, but it gets so boring sitting at home all day. Hey, what were you doing sneaking around? Ooh, nice rock..."

I stared at him incredulously. Who was he? What was he doing here?

"Who are you? Do I know you from somewhere...?" I ask hesitantly, my eyes flitting over his odd facial features. He was pretty skinny, but not deathly so. He had a really pale face, but perhaps it just seemed pale in the half light. A lot of shaggy brown hair hid his forehead and part of his bright green eyes, eyes that stared so inquisitively, so curiously, it seemed as if they were digging into your very soul. I shivered.

"Huh?" The boy looked up, and to his hand off the rock, which he was patting lovingly. "Oh! I'm Todd, Todd Reeds? Um, your next door neighbor? No? Really? Well, I live right next to you."

I stared even harder. What? How come I never noticed him before? I had combed the entire neighborhood, and as far as I had known, nobody had lived in the empty house next to me at the end of the street. It was just so run down, so dirty and disgusting, it seemed as if no one could possibly live there.
