If you're scratching your head and wondering what the heck a Buddy Read is, this would be a good place to start. In simplest terms, a Buddy Read is a member-organized discussion regarding a specific book or series. Before the start of the Buddy Read, two or more members decide upon a single book or series which they are interested in reading. The Buddy Read is then scheduled to begin on a specified date; after this date, no additional members may join the Buddy Read. A reading schedule is then created, requiring members to read anywhere from 50 to 100 pages per day. While the Buddy Read is taking place, members are encouraged to participate in the ongoing discussion; it defeats the purpose of a Buddy Read if no one chooses to participate in the discussion.
Many of you are most likely wondering, "What's the difference between reading a Buddy Read and a Series Buddy Read?" A standard Buddy Read involves reading a single book in a set timeframe. A Series Buddy Read refers to reading an entire series in a set timeframe.
If you view the "Buddy Reads" folder (here), you will notice that there is a word in [Square Brackets] at the beginning of each thread title. These are known as "Tags" and are inserted by a moderator. For clarification regarding the meaning of each term, view the list below:
[Open] These Buddy Reads have yet to begin and are still open to new members. Once the Buddy Read begins, however, this tag will be replaced by [In Progress]. Members are not permitted to join a Buddy Read after it has begun.
[Pending] These threads do not follow our guidelines for creating a new Buddy Read (which can be viewed below). If this is the case in a particular thread, a moderator will post there, stating the specific changes that the initial poster must make before the Buddy Read is approved. Any threads that are marked as [Pending] will be locked to all new comments until the original poster revises their initial post.
[In Progress] These Buddy Reads have already started and are currently taking place. New members are not permitted to join Buddy Reads marked with this tag.
[On-Hold] These Buddy Reads have been temporarily placed on hold at the request of the initial poster. This is often due to participating members' inability to secure the book before the Buddy Read is scheduled to begin. The initial poster of any thread marked with this tag is required to edit the Reading Schedule appropriately before the Buddy Read can be marked as [Open]. If the Reading Schedule is not updated within two weeks of the thread being tagged as [On-Hold], the Buddy Read will be marked as [Cancelled].
[Cancelled] These Buddy Reads have been cancelled due to a variety of possible reasons. The reason for cancellation will be posted in each particular thread.
[Completed] These Buddy Reads have already come to a finish and are locked to any new comments.

Every Buddy Read requires a minimum of two participants. Members may sign-up to participate in a Buddy Read before the start date only. New members will not be allowed to join a Buddy Read after the start date has passed.
Click here to view a list of all Buddy Reads. Any Buddy Read marked with the tag [Open] is currently accepting new participants. When an [Open] Buddy Read catches your eye, click on that particular thread. The Synopsis, Reading Schedule, and Participants will be listed in the thread. If you are interested in participating and believe that you will have access to the book by the scheduled start date, post in that thread. This will alert the poster that you will be participating, and you will be added to the "Participants" list.
The most important component of a Buddy Read is member participation. A Buddy Read is similar to a Monthly or Weekly Read discussion, but on a much smaller scale. Therefore, Buddy Read participants are expected to participate in the corresponding discussion.
Spoilers are permitted in all Buddy Reads. Consequently, please remember to include your current page number at the beginning of all of your posts.
