No, this took me completely by surprise.

Me, too, Charlene. I’d never even heard of the Chinese Exclusion Act, let alone how normal it appeared to be for these interracial marriages.

That was something I didn't know. I love how the author includes bits of history in her stories.

I learned a great deal about life for the Chinese immigrants from this story. It was eye opening.
