Forced to resign for medical reasons from his covert identity as the mercenary leader Admiral Naismith, Miles falls into a depression as he tries to figure out what to do with his life. Suddenly his former superior and head of Imperial Security Simon Illyan falls catastrophically ill, and Miles is appointed by the emperor to investigate.
I really enjoyed seeing Miles go through this growth spurt and metamorphosis. The author brings us deep into his character and we see the Barrayaran in him come to the fore. I also enjoyed seeing his cousin Ivan forced to grow up a little, and little by little he is coming into his own. This series has been all about the characters, and they are what keep me coming back. (The fun adventures help too.) This is probably the longest I've ever binged on a series from the beginning, that wasn't a re-read. And I'm still raring to go on.
