Susie The Long Take is truly deserving of its place on the Man Booker shortlist this year. A novel length narrative poem that shines a light on one man's struggle to survive post WWII, it jumps backwards and forwards from his life in LA, his memories of his youth in Canada, and his experiences in combat during the war. The backdrop that Robertson paints is just stunning. I felt as though he evoked the time and place beautifully. It was wonderfully atmospheric in a way that gave me a sense that I was right there with him. I like this book more and more in the rearview mirror. I originally gave it four but have bumped it up to a five upon reflection. I really wish I was able to read it in one sitting and despite rarely re-reading books, I think I will give this one another viewing at some stage.

Jgrace | 3944 comments It sounds interesting. I'll keep it in mind for November and Veterans's day.

Thanks!

Too bad. A bit late for Veteran's day.

KateNZ | 4101 comments I adored this - it’s top of my personal list. And I had put off starting it because I don’t like poetry!

It’s definitely a book I’ll re-read. There’s so much heart in it and it’s so hauntingly beautiful.
