Sword Waltz by Overweight Cat

Beside my shattered sword, I, mangled with bruises and covered in tattered armor, could no longer find the will to fight. This battle, this war, has left me among a battlefield of fallen warriors. Many mightier than I. With courage and determination I deemed infallible.

So, why was I still conscious? Why I, the youngest of all of these fine men lied here while they were either out of commission or depleted of life? It was nothing but a cruel fate paved for me. As if death himself showed me what awaited as the crimson angel walked towards me.

With her blade pressed against her back, she walked solemnly over each body to finish her genocidal mission. I could do no more than lift my head, gritting my teeth in my immobile state. This must be what my father must have felt before he met his fate in combat. The anxious anticipation. The rush of blood and adrenaline coursing through each and every vein.

As she stood before me, she lifted her hand towards my face. Her fingers pulsing with warm energy as rings formed in front her palm. I closed my eyes. Bit my lip tightly, blood trickling down my chin.

"Valiant knight," she said.

I lifted my eyes to meet her gaze.

She knelled down with her hand still extended towards me. "I come not to destroy you, Rydon, son of the Elijah clan."

"...you know me?"

She formed a warm smile. "Yes, I do. You are one of the several heroes meant to save my land."

My cheeks burned as I scanned the bodies. "Save your land? What about all these people you massacred?!"

"Young one, who among you are dead? They are merely sleeping. I was sent to test each of you for valor and strength."

I scanned again. Not one person was chopped, impaled or stabbed in the heart. What she said might be true. "But we were all defeated."

"Yes, but who is still awake and willing to fight again? Who has lasted the longest out of all these prestigious warriors? Don't give up, young one. You are destined for greatness. Deemed courageous by my father." She stood up and placed her hands on her hips. "How do you feel now?"

I blinked. A surge of energy flooded within me. A second wind blew within my bones and my bruises were healed underneath my tattered armor. Standing up, I saw her pleased expression. "I feel new again. Thank you."

"In 2 months, the Nocturnals will come for your land and mine. You, Rydon, must train and train hard. I will fight alongside you, but that will not be enough. We need the return of the heroes of legend. Do you feel up to the task?"

In my heart, I already knew the answer. Question is...do I believe it?
