Natália Lopes (silkcaramel) | 104 comments Another year, another TBR! This will be my fourth (already? OMG) year participating and although my TBR has decreased from its 1000+ books to a still gargantuous 800 or so, I have a long way to go to decrease my forever-growing pile, especially ebooks. So I'm back to Kilimanjaro, which seems to be my pet mountain, because I always end up on its top year after year. Oh well, 60 books is not a bad yearly goal. So, here we go again!

Thank you, Rhonda! I'm happy to have reduced at least a little my pile, and it's nice to pass on books I know I won't be reading or continuing on (as is the case with series I've read the first book and didn't enjoy or DNF). Hope you get to do the same in 2019!

Comment:I really enjoyed this book more than I thought I would after I started it. Yes, it was slow at times and things took a while to happen and the plot to unfold itself, but the characters relationship, their dynamics and personalities, their past and traumas were just as interesting, so in the end it didn't bother me as much. I like how the author wove some 'fairytales' in-between the actual story, as a paralell of sorts, and as a sample of the stories the main characters was writing. This was a dark fairytale-like book, where magic isn't always good and everything has a price. The sibling relationship between Imogen and Marin was well worked and they coming to terms with their past and how some of their actions impacted on each other, but how their love and wish to protect the other above all else was really well done and shined through the book. I was expecting a more bittersweet kind of ending, despite everything, because it seemed like the theme of the novel, but I was happy as to how it all played out. I don't know why I dragged this for so long, maybe because I needed to be in the right mood to appreciate this story. I'm happy it was my first book of 2019, though.

And we're kicking off the year! Like said with the last book of 2018, I'm in this dark, twisty fairytale vibe and I'm hoping to get a kick out of it and read as many books like this as I can, and I have a good amount (almost all by Holly Black haha). I'm also doing a buddy read for War & Peace, but that will last till April. I have other 2-3 books I was just shy of finishing in 2018, so I'll be shortly logging them here (NARNIA IS ALMOST CONQUERED, FINALLY!). I think I'm off to a good start!

Comment:This was kind of disappointing. I love the movie adaptations and was hoping to find the same magic and heart-warming feeling I had while watching it. Well, I did not. The book dragged for almost 4 years until I could get myself to finish it. And while I enjoyed some of the chronicles, the language and most of the characters weren't all that appealing to me. I really liked The Magician's Nephew and The Horse and His Boy, and was ok with The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, but Prince Caspian, The Voyage of The Dawn Treader were just dragging and just meh. The Last Battle was especially problematic to me. I don't know, I just couldn't feel this. I am glad I'm finally done with this since it took me a long while, but I can't say I'm too happy. Well, moving on to more enjoyable reads.

Comment: And we've reached the epic finale of this beautiful saga. I've loved Sailor Moon since I was a child and revisiting this story was very special. This last volume was just the perfect, heartfelt conclusion - Sailor Moon giving it her all to recover her friends, save the Galaxy when everything, including the future, is at stake. Chibi-Chibi's final revelation and the final powerup of Sailor Moon was just so powerful and embodied everything the author has been trying to say during the story. The graphics for the final battle are gorgeous (actually, the whole art for this series - and Naoko's other works as well - are just so so pretty you want to put on your wall) and the final scene is the cherry on top to Usagi and her friends' story. Obviously, a 5 stars read, and I can't wait to pick up the short stories and immerse myself in more Sailor Moon content! Especially since I've never read them before!

Comment:I have to say, at first I was a little doubtful about this book. Everyone who enjoys fantasy sings high praisies about this series, but I had some issues at the beginning - the plot was a little slow to unravel, it took me a while to get into the characters and to understand the magic system created here. BUT, by 50%, I was completely hooked in and THE ENDING WAS DEVASTATING. It was explosive and amazing and now I can totally understand why people love this book and Brandon Sanderson so much. The world building is amazing, the magic system, though a bit complicated, is really interesting and different, and all the characters are complex and likable. I really, really enjoyed it, and can't wait to pick up the sequel. But, although it was amazing, I had to took out half a star, because of the things I mentioned above that hindered my read at first, and the fact that were some repetitive parts in the middle that could have been cut off without compromising the plot, and how some things could have been sped up a little - sometimes the plot took a while to move along and it bothered me a little. Still, I'm hooked now and can't wait to read the rest of this trilogy and other books by this author!

Comment:This was such a fun, quick read! The whole adventure feel of this novel kept me interested and the characters were compelling and complex. Monty is this rake-like character, who dwells on gambling, drinking and company (both men and woman) to escape his dad and responsabilities and he's sometimes not aware of his priviledge or how untactful he is about some issues. He's a little conceited and reckless, but that only makes his character development even greater. Still, it's understandable why he acts in certain ways and his misshaps are funny, despite everything. It's impossible not to grow to like him, especially because he's the narrator of this story. I loved Percy as well, and their romance was just adorable, though I felt like I could do without the typical romance novel trope of all that drama between the main couple that separates them until the very end though they obviously love each other. As a LGBTQ period romance, though, I thought that the difficulties regarding the relationship (forbbiden, at the time) was treated too lightly - most of the times, Henry only got his father disapproval (to say mildly) and he and Percy still kept touching and kissing in plain sight, so I didn't feel like that was dangerous or forbidden like the time period required. I wished the author explores this a bit more, especially as she was constantly creating things to drive them apart - the fact that queer relationships were forbidden and often a death sentence was never one of them. I felt like Percy's skin color was a more proeminent source of conflict and was more developed than the queer aspect, which was supposed to be the center of the novel. Still, the romance was great and I liked the dynamics between them, even if Percy at times seemed to doubt Henry as much as the others. Still, despite all that, I had fun while reading this and if I had the time I would've certainly devoured it in a go. It's a great romance novel, with an adventure and road-trip feel, but while I liked it a lot, I didn't love it and it wasn't all that groundbreaking. I will definitely read Felicity's novel because I'm interested in getting to know her character better and maybe understand her a little, but I'm going in without expecting amazing things like I did with this one after all the rave it was getting.

Comment:I am absolutely in love with this book. All the amazing, complex characters, the historical-inspired background, the political aspects, all the twists and turns and the heart-wrenching romance to top it all of...I just couldn't put this down and ended up finishing the whole thing in a day and a half (and only because I had to eat, sleep, work and other bothersome things like that). Kestrel is my kind of main character - she's driven, loyal, compassionated and her main strenght is not her beauty or even her prowess with arms, it's her mind. She's clever, she's a brilliant strategist and can sometimes be ruthless if needed be and it's not afraid to make decisions and stand by them, no matter what others might think of her. I loved the relationship between her and her father, her friends and her nurse, as well as how her relationship with Arin developed. Yes, despite being considered a fantasy novel, the romance is the main force behind everything that happens here and it's front and center at almost all times. Yet, despite not enjoying this kind of thing on books, in here it made sense and the story wouldn't work as well without this element. I was already so hooked into the world and the characters that I didn't mind much and it was honestly what made the whole thing so great. The book was a rollercoaster of emotions, and very bittersweet, but nothing hurted me more than the ending. The final chapter just hurt my heart and now I need the next installments to know what will happen with Kestrel and Arin.

And with that I've wrapped January with a total of 10 books, 6 of which were from my TBR and 4 from my virtual TBR! It's been a good reading month and I'm pumped to continue my climb while I'm picking up speed. Let's hope that February will be as sucessfull as January!

Comment: Although I adored the first book in the series, I had some issues with this second volume, especially with the rithym of the story and Meira's character. It suffered from middle-book syndrome and things only picked up speed at 60% or so and that final third made it worthwhile. There were some new, interesting characters presented here and the existing ones had some good (and sometimes shocking) development. Raasch also expanded the world she created, allowing the reader to explore the other kingdoms, especially the other seasons and their culture and politics. The final events and the plot twists left me reeling and excited for the final installment.

Comment: Since I didn't care much for the first book in this trilogy, I wasn't expecting anything from this second installment. And what a surprise it was to find myself devouring this book! The author expanded the world and showed us more about the mysterious Venda and it's evil ruler, as well as the mythology of this world, unraveling it's secrets and sheding some light into some unresolved issues of the previous novel. We also got some other much needed answers and the threads created in the final chapters of book 1 were well developed and worked through here. I really really liked Lia's development - she went from this clueless, reckless princess to this resorceful, smart and powerful woman who is becoming a leader in her own right. The political aspects of this book were so interesting and the intrigues of this court reminded me a little of Game of Thrones, in smaller scale. And I think that's what made the book for me.

The plot is well-paced, taking it's time to develop things but not dragging. I wished we could have seen more of Pauline, but still her chapters were well placed and didn't took much from the actual center of the story. The romance wasn't too much as well, and it was a source of support for the characters, a ray of light in all that darkness and it was sweet. On that aspect, though, Kaden was the most annoying character ever, although I was surprised by his backstory and his relationship with the Komizar (who is, by the way, a great and terrible villain). The ending was dynamic and full of twists and it builds this sensation of dread into the reader until it explodes into the final two chapters. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Comment:I really tried to go on with this book, mainly because there were some plotlines I was interested in - the mystery of why she died, why she haunts that spot, among others. There were some paranormal aspects of it I enjoyed, but the pace was really slow and it focused so much on the romance that everything that was interesting about it was pushed aside. And the instalove aspect was just a major 'no no' for me. I mean, the male protagonist finds out he is 'dating' a ghost and he's totally ok with it almost immediately. This was not for me, so I won't be continuing with it.

Comment:I'm happy to have finished this trilogy, though it's not my favorite fantasy ever. It did end on a semi-high note and left me at least a bit satisfied, so it's ok. Still, I wanted a bit more since the first book was one of my favorite reads in 2016. While I complained about the pace in the previous novel, in this one I think the beginning was very rushed and things were not properly developed (I mean, Meira spend what, 2 weeks training her powers and it was enough? Suddenly she knew exactly what to do? C'mon *face palm*). Still, it was a faster read than the second book and there was a lot going on and some major tension in the air at all times. There were some surprises along the way, some very angst and tense scenes, but the battle was a little bit flat and the ending was just ok. I mean, it wasn't bad, and it was well done and well written, but I was already expecting something of the kind to happen, so I didn't feel the impact of it as much as the author intended.

Comment:Although I loved the first one, and this second installment was also very good, there were some issues that I couldn't overlook. Overall, after the events of The Winner's Curse, we have Kestrel navigating the political games and the dangers of the court, as well as Arin trying to rebuild Herran, while still trying to keep the Valorians at bay. There is a tension that hovers over the entire book and leaves the reader feeling uneasy like anything bad could happen at all times the entire time and when things finally explode, you're left reeling and just as destroyed as our mains characters. I liked the new characters but wanted more of an active role for some of them. And while I love me some angsty in my couples, the plot device the author used here not only to keep the two leads apart but to set the whole thing to the end she wanted was just so poor - I hate lack of communication as a way to further things along and delay the couple getting together. It means that the whole plot could have unraveled with one decent conversation and there would be no book afterward. It feels like lazy writing to me and was what it bothered me the most here. I get it that there were some trust issues between Arin and Kestrel, justifiably so, but it was stretched out as much as it could until it was just annoying and an obvious plot device. Still, I keep enjoying this story so much and Kestrel & Arin's characters are amazing. They grow a lot during this book and I think it sets the whole mood for the conclusion. It's a good, albeit somewhat problematic middle book.

Comment: I had so much fun while reading this book! I love mythology retellings and I love Riordan's books, so obviously I would pick up the books from his mythology print. And I was so happy I did it! I don't know much about Indian mythology, but Roshani did an amazing job introducing me to it through a fun, very original and, dare I say, Riordan-esque way. Aru is a very compelling and relatable character. She's the typical 10/12 year old, who wants to belong and be accepted by her peers. While she does have her flaws, she grows a lot during the story, owning to her mistakes and finding her place and embracing her role. I love her friendship with Mini and their dynamic. The side characters are just as interesting and there are a lot of hilarious moments. Plot-wise, it's not revolutionary - actually, it's a pretty standard first book in a series, and not particularly surprising, especially if you've read Percy Jackson before. There aren't many twists, but the ending is good and satisfying, as well as leaving some clues of what is to come, enough to make me want to pick up the sequel the minute it comes out.

Yay, Pike's Peak conquered! And on my way up Mt. Blanc! March is being a better reading month for me than February was, surprisingly. I'm reading more and even moving along books I've put aside for a while. I'm hoping to finish at least 2 or 3 more before the end of this month.

Comment:After the amazingness that was Mistborn, I was kind of disappointed in this book. Yes, it's an interesting premise and the powers and how the Epics turned out got me curious, but there are some plot-developing issues, and I just couldn't connect to any of the characters in a way that left me worried for them or even cared about them at all. David is irritating with his 'i want to be a badass, not a nerd, and I can't understand why this beautiful girl, who happens to be my age, isn't immediately in love with me, even though she was only nice to me once and now seems to dislike me a lot, so now I have to think of ways to make her laugh while we're in the middle of a dangerous mission'. The action scenes were ok, but it didn't give me a sense of danger and the ending, though it had its twists, wasn't all that surprising (a lot of what was revealed I guessed beforehand because of some clues left by the author) and there were some things that were just very cliché. Like Sanderson couldn't be bothered to write complex things because it was a YA novel instead of high fantasy. I might continue with the trilogy, more for the answers about certain aspects of the plot that were left unanswered than because of David and the others. Too bad, I was really hoping to like this book.

And that's a wrap on March! I was hoping to finish at least another one before midnight, but I don't think I will. Still, 4 is still on track.

Comment:This is the definition of middle book syndrome. It was a hot mess, full of more questions than answers, Amy had this great character arc that was kind of waisted with her kind of regression in personality (she was already kind of harsh and impulsive in the first book, but here she simply stop thinking and is driven mainly by her 'desire' to find the boy she interacted with for, idk, 50 pages during the first installment?). Things felt rushed and too easy at first, and then when the big events happened, it was anti-climatic and the plot twists were confusing because, again, it brought more new questions than answers. I'm kind of disappointed, but I like this story and Paige's writing, and I'm intrigued enough, especially after the last scene, to continue on.

Comment:I can't believe I am done with this book! I've been trying to finish this since last year, but I was always getting stuck somewhere in the reading. Mind you, this is not a bad book, not at all. It might be my second favorite in the series. I love the growth both Eragon and Sapphira undergoes during this series - Eragon here sounds and acts more mature, more wary of his position as Dragon Rider and leader, more aware of the consequences of his actions and what he needs to do to fulfill his duty. He is not as lovesick with Arya to the point of being annoying (and very insistent with her) and they strike an easy companionship here that I like. This is a much more slow paced book, it dwells more on the politics of Alagaesia and it's people, as well as solve some pending side-plots to hopefully concentrate all the focus of the last book in the final stand against Galbatorix & his minions. There is a lot of revelations here, some much needed explanations and lots of things going on. I also really enjoyed some of the new characters, how the author explored the Urgals – a race that was thought of as ‘all bad’ and as villanous as Galbatorix - and the different POV’s we’ve had here (having chapters from Sapphira’s very different POV was amazing and I absolutely loved Nasuada’s chapters and her character overall). The ending is not as explosive as it was in the previous novels, or as surprising, but it was still action-packed and somewhat reminded the characters of everything at stake. I have two complaints about this book, though. First of all, I think it is unnecessarily long. There was a lot of scenes that didn’t add anything to the main plot and coudl’ve been cut off easily. And second, Roran’s character. As much as I enjoyed his journey in the previous installment, and his POV was somewhat needed for us to see what was happening with the Vardens while Eragon was away, I felt that he had fullfilled his role already and this was just a repeat of his behavior in book 2, so lots of his chapter were unnecessary and I couldn’t care much about what was happening to him most of the times – I was more excited/intrigued about Eragon’s actions than his and just wanted most of theses in-between chapters to end. If these two aspects had been condensed and were delt with, I would have enjoyed it way more and it would probably have been my favorite from the series so far. As it is, it is still a very good book and I’m happy I can finally move on to the big finale!

I've this series on my shelf since 2011! I can't believe I'm finally moving on to the finale! I'm feeling pretty good about April's readings so far!

Comment:I don't know how I feel about this book. Yes, I enjoyed it to some degree. I found the paranormal aspects interesting, the whole politics and games between the races, the mystery of the Book of Life, why the paranormal creatures were 'losing' heir powers over the time and I enjoyed the romance up to some point. But then it became too melodramatic, too clingy and syrup-sweet and honestly not much was happening at all to further the plot. There was 50 or more pages with slice-of-life and romance 'building' scenes and I just lost interest. The whole book was slow and 'sleepy' and I had a problem with how overly descriptive the author is, as well as how redundant. So, although I passed the halfway mark and had, idk, less than 200 pages to finish, I couldn't muster the will to pick the book up for almost three months. I did read a chapter today, but that was it, and what I read didn't excite me to keep going. I loved the tv show and I think it was more dynamic and interesting, without losing the romance aspect, so I will keep with it, but unfortunately I'm DNF the book and the rest of the series. 4 more books out of my TBR, at least.

Comment: I'm counting it a victory that I managed to get to Book 2, Tome II. That's about 30% and 400 pages in. But it's as far as I'll go with this one. Sorry to the fans, I just don't see the appeal, I can't get into the story, can't bring myself to care for the characters (almost all of them are TERRIBLE or outright tools) - all I felt for them was contempt and irritation. The book is ABSURDLY slow, nothing at all happens for pages and pages and when it does, it's overly descriptive and overly contextualized battle scenes or society 'games'. I might watch the movie with Audrey Hepburn, because I love her, and maybe the new miniseries, just because I want to see the famous Andrei x Natasha romance (though I absolutely hate Andrei's indecisive character) and the final scene. I am done with this monster, one less giant on my TBR.

It's not been a kind couple of months for me, as well as my physicial TBR goes. I am hoping to complete at least 3 more books this month, all of them counting towards this challenge AND books I'm throughly enjoying so far (finally!).

Going slow, but steady. My virtual TBR is consuming me and straying me from my physical mountain lately. I really need to get back on track!

July was such a good month - 06 TBR books! And August is revealing itself as good...I mean, 03 completed TBR books plus 05 more on the way! My reading slump is definitely over and I'm picking up put-aside books to finish them, as well as finally picking up book series I started years ago but haven't finished yet, which makes me really really happy!

I think this is it for me in August. Again, 06 books, all of them TBR ones! I'm counting that as a win. I don't think I'll finish anything till August 31, but I'm hoping to at least get close to finishing two other books. At this rate, I'll be just shy of my 60 books goal by December 31, so I might have to pick up my pace OR read some graphic novels/short stories books to get to the top.

A 4 star read in a sea of 3 stars. September is being a very meh month for me, but at least my reading pace has intensified and I'm completing TBR books! I have 2-3 more that I find I can finish by the end of the month. I'm still a little behind, but I might be able to make it yet!

Wow, TBR 10 books in September! I am impressed and happy with myself! I'm now still a little behind on my trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro, but less so and quickly catching up. BUT, I had to up my GR challenge by 10 books, because I completed it WAY ahead of time! YAY ME! Is this the year I'll finally make to the 100th book on the GR challenge? I think it can be possible!

October was a virtual TBR month - I joined a Halloween book challenge, where we read a lot of mystery, thrillers and horror books and only one of them was on my pile so I could count it towards this mountain. I'm really afraid I won't complete Mt Kilimanjaro this year, but now I don't have to study as hard for my residency test, I might be able to pick up my pace!

BUT, I'm only 3 books till 100 books on my GR challenge! I have 5 books on the works that will count towards this mountain, so let's see what happens till December!
