Mount TBR 2019 discussion

Hi everyone!

This will be my 6th year attempting the climb. Like most of us, I have an ever-growing TBR list, and this challenge helps me keep it under control!

I'm a mood reader, so I'll post my books as I finish them.

Same here, Jessika! My reading this year wasn't the best so far, I've 5 books to go. It's summit or bust :)

Best wishes in 2019! I should give in and admit to reading by mood. I always post the books I plan to read, then end up going back to edit them as I go along. I'm only kidding myself.

Don't worry, Carrie. I'm the same - I have a list of books in my head, but then I always seem to find something else that strikes my fancy. So in the past few years, I've just followed my mood, and have had more enjoyable reads because of it!

1. Acquired 12/2018, 4/5 stars. Kind of cheating, since it's a 30 page kids book, but hey, gotta start off the year strong, right? Hehe :) My husband bought this for Christmas to feed my giraffe addiction, as well as my childhood love for Shel Silverstein.

Not cheating--they all count. I have children's books about beavers that are in the same category (my husband knows I collect beaver items).

I'm kind of a mood reader too, although I use the Book Riot and Pop Sugar challenges to encourage diversity in my reading. Best of luck on whittling away your TBR!

2. Acquired before I joined GR in 2011, but I'm guessing maybe 2009ish, 2/5 stars. I feel like I was reading this book forever. I've tried a number of this author's books, and I guess I'm just not a fan of his style or something. I have 2 more books to get through in the Wicked series because I hate leaving things unfinished.

2 books down- go you! I too am a mood reader but have tried to make a list of everything I own including a shorter list of books owned for longer than 2 years... we can do this!

Yeah, trying to get to some of those older books is a challenge, because obviously they haven't caught my mood for this long, so why would I want to read them now? And yet, they must have caught my eye at some time, or I wouldn't have bought them! Hehe

Got a huge pile from the library, so I focused on those for January (and a few to finish in February), so the virtual mountain is currently outpacing my owned TBR!

I'll probably read some graphic novels this weekend to help get caught up, hehe :)

Ultimately it's the quality and the experience not the total that counts! Besides it is only January. Hope you read some great books next month - and if they qualify for this challenge then that will be even better :)

3. Acquired 1/2017, 5/5 stars. I loved this graphic novel set in a matriarchal, steam-punk, Lovecraftian world. Can't wait to read the next one!

4. Acquired 7/2017, 4.5/5 stars. Another amazing work! I'm continuing to be blown away by the artwork. On to the 3rd!

5. Acquired before I joined GR in 2011, 2/5 stars. Still NOT enjoying this series or the author's style. I listened to this on audiobook and purged the physical copy. But I will carry on and listen to the last book, just so I can say I finally finished the series!

6. Acquired 12/2018, 4/5 stars. All caught up in this series, and anxiously awaiting news on Vol. 4!

Kind of a slow reading month overall, but still making progress! I'm currently in the middle of 3 books that will count towards March so far. Doing my taxes today (blegh) so probably not a lot of reading happening...

7. Acquired probably in 2007, 5/5 stars. Why oh why did I wait so long to read this? Probably because I loved the movie and didn't want to ruin it. So good.

Had a terrible month of almost no reading... Must keep huffing and puffing up the mountain!

8. Acquired 9/2014, 4/5 stars. I'm trying to read 4 or 5 in this series this year. I enjoyed this one quite a lot, and got through it in under a week. Hopefully if I can fly through my next few books, I'll be back on track!

9. Acquired 8/2015, 3/5 stars. A decent memoir, but if you're expecting memories from Python days, like I was, you'll be disappointed.

10. Acquired 9/2016, 3/5 stars. Self-help(ish) for aspiring writers. Interesting read, but nothing ground breaking.

11. Acquired 9/2014, 5/5 stars. My favorite one so far! Could barely put it down! I probably won't jump straight into the next one, as I need to get some older books off my TBR.

12. Acquired probably around 2008, 3.5/5 stars. Whenever I finish a Vonnegut book, I have to ask myself, "Did I like it?" I'm not sure. His books are never straight forward and always leave me thinking about the state of the world.

I had a good month of reading in April, a total of 9 books, 5 of which brought up my total for this challenge. I'm still behind, but not cripplingly so.

13. Acquired 8/2013, 3.5/5 stars. Woohoo! I finally finished Les Mis after almost 6 months!!!! Overall, I enjoyed it, but it could have been way shorter. There were whole chapters about the sewers of Paris, and how different classes spoke different types of slang... you know, really important stuff.

Congrats! That book is a mountain in its own right!

Good job on that one Jessika! I'm still working on the book, so very slowly! I will be happy if I finish this year LOL. Doesn't it feel like it should count as 2 at least? How many "books" are there in it?

Yes, for sure!! There are 5 major parts, consisting of 5-15 Books each!!!

14. Acquired probably around 2007, 5/5 stars. Why did I wait so long to read this powerful biography?? I don't know if "enjoyed" is the right word, but it is definitely worth reading. It was difficult to read about the condition of women's rights in Saudi Arabia, but I'm interested to follow the rest of this fearless woman's story.

I loved "Princess" as a teenager. I think there are 5 in the series so far. The last is still on my TBR now I think about it. I hope you enjoy them.

Yeah, it's marked as a "trilogy" but I noticed there were still more books. Apparently, there's some controversy over whether or not it's a true story. In my opinion, the story is true enough, as in, the types of things that happened in the book can and do happen in real life, even if maybe they didn't happen to her alone.

I agree with you about the truth of the story. There was a gap of quite a few years between the publication of book 3 and 4 which is why I think it is marketed as a trilogy. Book 5 came out quite quickly afterwards, but I have not read it yet.

15. Acquired 9/2014, 4.5/5 stars. Another really good one! Onward with the series.

May was off to slow start, but I feel accomplished because I finished Les Mis! I have a vacation coming up in June, but it's a group trip and an active vacation, so I don't think I'll be too productive this month, unless I can get some audiobooks in on the plane rides.
