Jessika (jessika_56) Hi everyone!

This will be my 6th year attempting the climb. Like most of us, I have an ever-growing TBR list, and this challenge helps me keep it under control!

I'm a mood reader, so I'll post my books as I finish them.

Happy trails, everyone! Feel free to add me as a friend. Friendly comments always appreciated. :)

Natália Lopes (silkcaramel) | 104 comments Happy climbing,Jessika! I definitely relate to being a mood reader. I try to make a list at the beginning of the year and plan, but I end up never following it, or at least only in the beginning.

Welcome back for another round! Have a fun climb.

message 5: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) Thanks, guys! It's always exciting to look ahead, but I still have quite a few left to read for 2018!!

message 6: by Sam (new)

Sam (aramsamsam) Same here, Jessika! My reading this year wasn't the best so far, I've 5 books to go. It's summit or bust :)
Happy reading in 2019!

Karen | 106 comments Following reading lists? I am totally rubbish at that! Your comment totally makes sense to me. Best wishes for the rest of 2018 and happy reading in 2019!

Pamela | 110 comments Happy trails to you too Jessika! Good luck on your reading mountain for 2019.

message 9: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) Thanks, everyone!

message 10: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (cseydel) Happy climbing!

message 11: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (sophiarose) Cheering you on, Jessika!

message 12: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (cseydel) Best wishes in 2019! I should give in and admit to reading by mood. I always post the books I plan to read, then end up going back to edit them as I go along. I'm only kidding myself.

Happy reading!

message 13: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) Thanks Sophia and Carrie!

Don't worry, Carrie. I'm the same - I have a list of books in my head, but then I always seem to find something else that strikes my fancy. So in the past few years, I've just followed my mood, and have had more enjoyable reads because of it!

Jessika (jessika_56) 1. A Giraffe and a Half by Shel Silverstein Acquired 12/2018, 4/5 stars. Kind of cheating, since it's a 30 page kids book, but hey, gotta start off the year strong, right? Hehe :) My husband bought this for Christmas to feed my giraffe addiction, as well as my childhood love for Shel Silverstein.

Not cheating--they all count. I have children's books about beavers that are in the same category (my husband knows I collect beaver items).

message 18: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (purpleypumpkin) | 6 comments I'm kind of a mood reader too, although I use the Book Riot and Pop Sugar challenges to encourage diversity in my reading. Best of luck on whittling away your TBR!

message 19: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) 2. Son of a Witch (The Wicked Years, #2) by Gregory Maguire Acquired before I joined GR in 2011, but I'm guessing maybe 2009ish, 2/5 stars. I feel like I was reading this book forever. I've tried a number of this author's books, and I guess I'm just not a fan of his style or something. I have 2 more books to get through in the Wicked series because I hate leaving things unfinished.

message 20: by Zara (new)

Zara (kind_konfetti) 2 books down- go you! I too am a mood reader but have tried to make a list of everything I own including a shorter list of books owned for longer than 2 years... we can do this!

message 21: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) Kind wrote: "2 books down- go you! I too am a mood reader but have tried to make a list of everything I own including a shorter list of books owned for longer than 2 years... we can do this!"

Yeah, trying to get to some of those older books is a challenge, because obviously they haven't caught my mood for this long, so why would I want to read them now? And yet, they must have caught my eye at some time, or I wouldn't have bought them! Hehe

message 22: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) January Update:

Total read: 14/80
Counting for this challenge: 2/60 (ALREADY BEHIND!!!)
Total added to TBR 2019: 1
Total added to virtual TBR: 11

Got a huge pile from the library, so I focused on those for January (and a few to finish in February), so the virtual mountain is currently outpacing my owned TBR!

I'll probably read some graphic novels this weekend to help get caught up, hehe :)

message 23: by Karen (new)

Karen | 106 comments Ultimately it's the quality and the experience not the total that counts! Besides it is only January. Hope you read some great books next month - and if they qualify for this challenge then that will be even better :)

Thanks for your encouraging words!

message 25: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) 3. Monstress, Vol. 1 Awakening (Monstress, #1) by Marjorie M. Liu Acquired 1/2017, 5/5 stars. I loved this graphic novel set in a matriarchal, steam-punk, Lovecraftian world. Can't wait to read the next one!

message 26: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) 4. Monstress, Vol. 2 The Blood (Monstress, #2) by Marjorie M. Liu Acquired 7/2017, 4.5/5 stars. Another amazing work! I'm continuing to be blown away by the artwork. On to the 3rd!

message 27: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) 5. A Lion Among Men (The Wicked Years, #3) by Gregory Maguire Acquired before I joined GR in 2011, 2/5 stars. Still NOT enjoying this series or the author's style. I listened to this on audiobook and purged the physical copy. But I will carry on and listen to the last book, just so I can say I finally finished the series!

message 28: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) 6. Monstress, Vol. 3 Haven (Monstress, #3) by Marjorie M. Liu Acquired 12/2018, 4/5 stars. All caught up in this series, and anxiously awaiting news on Vol. 4!

message 29: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) February Update:

Total read: 21/80
Counting for this challenge: 6/60 (Wow, I better get going!)
Total added to TBR 2019: 1
Total added to virtual TBR: 16

Kind of a slow reading month overall, but still making progress! I'm currently in the middle of 3 books that will count towards March so far. Doing my taxes today (blegh) so probably not a lot of reading happening...

message 30: by Darci (new)

Darci (girlbetweenthepages) | 58 comments Monstress sounds fantastic, I definitely need to pick it up at some point! I hope March is a great reading month for you!

Yes, I hope you enjoy it! It is pretty dark, just a fair warning... Thanks, and good luck in March to you!

message 32: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) 7. Everything Is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer Acquired probably in 2007, 5/5 stars. Why oh why did I wait so long to read this? Probably because I loved the movie and didn't want to ruin it. So good.

message 33: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) March Update:

Total read: 24/80
Counting for this challenge: 7/60
Total added to TBR 2019: 1
Total added to virtual TBR: 17

Had a terrible month of almost no reading... Must keep huffing and puffing up the mountain!

message 34: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) 8. K is for Killer (Kinsey Millhone, #11) by Sue Grafton Acquired 9/2014, 4/5 stars. I'm trying to read 4 or 5 in this series this year. I enjoyed this one quite a lot, and got through it in under a week. Hopefully if I can fly through my next few books, I'll be back on track!

message 35: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) 9. So, Anyway... by John Cleese Acquired 8/2015, 3/5 stars. A decent memoir, but if you're expecting memories from Python days, like I was, you'll be disappointed.

message 36: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) 10. Nobody Wants to Read Your Sh*t Why That Is And What You Can Do About It by Steven Pressfield Acquired 9/2016, 3/5 stars. Self-help(ish) for aspiring writers. Interesting read, but nothing ground breaking.

message 37: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) 11. L is for Lawless (Kinsey Millhone, #12) by Sue Grafton Acquired 9/2014, 5/5 stars. My favorite one so far! Could barely put it down! I probably won't jump straight into the next one, as I need to get some older books off my TBR.

message 38: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) 12. Jailbird by Kurt Vonnegut Acquired probably around 2008, 3.5/5 stars. Whenever I finish a Vonnegut book, I have to ask myself, "Did I like it?" I'm not sure. His books are never straight forward and always leave me thinking about the state of the world.

message 39: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) April Update:

Total read: 33/80
Counting for this challenge: 12/60
Total added to TBR 2019: 3
Total added to virtual TBR: 22

I had a good month of reading in April, a total of 9 books, 5 of which brought up my total for this challenge. I'm still behind, but not cripplingly so.

message 40: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) 13. Les Misérables by Victor Hugo Acquired 8/2013, 3.5/5 stars. Woohoo! I finally finished Les Mis after almost 6 months!!!! Overall, I enjoyed it, but it could have been way shorter. There were whole chapters about the sewers of Paris, and how different classes spoke different types of slang... you know, really important stuff.

message 41: by Susan (new)

Good job on that one Jessika! I'm still working on the book, so very slowly! I will be happy if I finish this year LOL. Doesn't it feel like it should count as 2 at least? How many "books" are there in it?

Yes, for sure!! There are 5 major parts, consisting of 5-15 Books each!!!

Jessika (jessika_56) Susan wrote: "Congrats! That book is a mountain in its own right!"

Yes it is! I enjoyed it but am glad to be moving on!

message 45: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) 14. Princess by Jean Sasson Acquired probably around 2007, 5/5 stars. Why did I wait so long to read this powerful biography?? I don't know if "enjoyed" is the right word, but it is definitely worth reading. It was difficult to read about the condition of women's rights in Saudi Arabia, but I'm interested to follow the rest of this fearless woman's story.

message 46: by Karen (new)

Karen | 106 comments I loved "Princess" as a teenager. I think there are 5 in the series so far. The last is still on my TBR now I think about it. I hope you enjoy them.

message 47: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) Karen wrote: "I loved "Princess" as a teenager. I think there are 5 in the series so far. The last is still on my TBR now I think about it. I hope you enjoy them."

Yeah, it's marked as a "trilogy" but I noticed there were still more books. Apparently, there's some controversy over whether or not it's a true story. In my opinion, the story is true enough, as in, the types of things that happened in the book can and do happen in real life, even if maybe they didn't happen to her alone.

message 48: by Karen (new)

Karen | 106 comments I agree with you about the truth of the story. There was a gap of quite a few years between the publication of book 3 and 4 which is why I think it is marketed as a trilogy. Book 5 came out quite quickly afterwards, but I have not read it yet.

message 49: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) 15. M is for Malice (Kinsey Millhone, #13) by Sue Grafton Acquired 9/2014, 4.5/5 stars. Another really good one! Onward with the series.

message 50: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) May Update:

Total read: 38/80
Counting for this challenge: 15/60
Total added to TBR 2019: 15
Total added to virtual TBR: 23

May was off to slow start, but I feel accomplished because I finished Les Mis! I have a vacation coming up in June, but it's a group trip and an active vacation, so I don't think I'll be too productive this month, unless I can get some audiobooks in on the plane rides.
