Juliana “The Sky is Everywhere” by Jandy Nelson, a Young Adult Fiction Novel. The novel follows a teenage girl, Lennie, who has recently lost her older sister and is coming to realizations about how life is like without her. While Lennie goes through the phases of grief and loss while also facing the everyday challenges of being a teenager. The new boy, Jo Fontaine, is the talk of the school and one of the only things that will get Lennie's mind out of her deep sorrow. And her best and only friend Sarah described as an edgy goth character, she is Lennie's lifeline now that her sister is gone. And then like most teenagers Lennie has the overly protective and somewhat embarrassing gardens. Following the book, I was quick to connect with Lennie and her struggles as a teenager. I enjoyed the raw writing style that the author used and the poetic symbolism she chose to describe anything and everything in the novel.
The book itself had a strange way of pulling the reader in and then breaking their heart, I would definitely not recommend this book for someone looking for an escape from the real world. The book describes all of its characters and events if feelings and emotions instead of bland descriptors. One of the most memorable passages from the book is when the author describes grief. “Grief is a house where the chairs have forgotten how to hold us the mirrors how to reflect us the walls how to contain us grief is a house that disappears each time someone knocks at the door or rings the bell house that blows into the air at the slightest gust that buries itself deep in the ground while everyone is sleeping grief is a house where no one can protect you where the younger sister will grow older than the older one where the doors no longer let you in or out.” The way she poetically describes everything entrances the reader and makes you want to continue reading.
While peronally i would rate this book 5/5 stars, I also wouldny recomend it for everyone. If you are a poetry fenatic or love romance this is totally your kind of book. However if you dont like or enjoy that kind of novel and arent a young adult, then you might not enjoy this book as thuroughly as I. In conclusion read this book if your 12-19 and like poetry and dont read if detailed descriptions bore you.
