For instance, if I'm to read a book with the word "room" in the title, can I read my Danish copy Rum which is the same book as Room?
I hope you understand my question, it's a little hard to explain! :)
And for covers, which cover do I use? The cover of my copy of the book, or the cover of the most added goodreads copy? :) Most of the titles have a lot of different covers, and I just want to do it right :)
Sorry if these are some dumb questions, it's my first time doing this challenge :)
Welcome, Irene
Words should appear in the title of the edition you read. Some info:
Books in languages other than English may be used. Please provide information on the book and/or title to your English speaking moderators so they can understand how the books fit the tasks. Any task requiring a specific title (number of letters, number of words, specific word in title, etc.) should apply to the title that you use.
So if "rum" is "room" in Danish, that works.
Tasks requirements almost always apply to the edition that you read. There are rules for page numbers for ebooks and audiobooks that use the information from print editions

Thank you! :) Looking forward to the challenge

I get that we should verify the Genre based ones but what else?
Sorry, it's my first time so I'm not clear on the rules yet :)

You don't need to verify ANY books. People typically ask for verification for one of two reasons - because they're not sure whether the book works for the task, or because it's a genre task, and they're afraid that the genre may change between the time that they choose the book and the time that they post the task.
If the task is not a "main page genre" task and the book clearly works (for instance, if a specific word must appear in the title, and that exact word is in the title of your book), there's no point to asking the task creator to verify your choice.

What about pre-listening? I have an audio version (playaway) of Under the Dome over 1000 pages depending on format and 34.5 hours long.
Follow up: If all the Mass Market Paperback versions are in languages other than the one I'm 'reading' in (English), should I move to Paperback for page count? I don't know how different translations would skew page numbers and I just want to do things correctly.
Morgan wrote: "This may be answered elsewhere, but I haven't found it. Pre-reading of large books over 499 pages is okay as long as more than half of it is read during the challenge.

You may use an audio edition the same way- no more than half and the book must be over 499 pages under the rules.
If the top result is a mass market paperback (or other format as necessary) in a foreign language with page numbers, you may use that edition to establish page numbers

Thanks! I've never used one of the playaways before so I tried it out for about an hour at work Friday just to see how it would work (if being in my lab coat pocket would stop it or cause it to skip or whatever). I'll keep listening, because I'll only get to 5 more hours at most during work next week and 6 hours is definitely below half of 34.5.

Thanks! So we just go with mass market paperback instead of the versions that just says paperback...

I read it way back in June when Summer challenge started, but today I couldn't find the thread and I knew there was a way the mods looked at which version counted. Thanks for the help!

Sorry, no. A book only can be used for one task.

Ok thank you. I wasn't sure

There are 10 tasks at the 5, 10, 15, 20 point levels. The number of 25 and 30 tasks depends on how many people finish the challenge, so the number will not be determined until after midnight tonight. There will be one 50 pointer at the midpoint of the challenge.
20 and 25 point task creators will be identified after midnight tonight, then the tasks will be released when the task creators get them to the moderators and we go through them, looking for potential problems, etc.
If you go to the Rules section and read through the Rewards of the Challenge, you'll learn more about how the tasks are awarded.

OK thank you.

Since there are new rules concerning the validation of children's books, are the page numbers not important anymore? Do children's books for the higher point tasks still have to have 300 pages or more? or just the correct AR information?
thanks!

The current rules are the only ones that apply right now to childrens books. If a book meets the requirements specified in the rules, it can be used for any task, except for those higher point tasks where the task creators have specified that no books with the genre childrens can be used.

Here's an example - this would still be allowed for 5-15 point tasks, right? Good-Bye, Chunky Rice (comics genre on main page, 100-200 pages, graphic novel/not a comic collection)
Whereas this book would NOT be accepted at all for any task in the challenge? MUTTS Sunday Evenings: A Mutts Treasury (comics genre on main page, 100-200 pages, not a graphic novel/is a comic collection)

You've got it! Listed genres don't work well for this distinction, because cartoon collections get tagged as "graphic novels," even if there's no "novel" to them, while most graphic novels get comics added as a tag.

5.10 - Independent Study
Read a book of your choice. Note: Books with the genre "children" or "kids" NOT found in AR Bookfinder MAY be used for this task.

Thank you. I know there are technically "no stupid questions, but this one feels a little on the stupid side." I appreciate your help.

Above the comment box, there's a link for "add book/author." After you search through that link, and pull up the book you want, look down - at the bottom, there's a choice to post the link or the cover.

Yes thank you!

First one is that we have 3 group reads, but they are also part of the challenges, right?
Do we have to read those books or can we select a different one?
I ask because I read A is for Alibi a long time ago.
Thanks and happy reading

To complete this task you must read one of the three group read and make a post in its discission thread.
When you make your completion post for this task, link to your post or if you don't know how give the post number for the moderators to find it.

you can get both for a book.
you can get both for a book.

yes, that would be a good option.
yes, that would be a good option.
I have two questions.
1. If you've started a book before September 1, but are not even half-way through, can you still count it? Can you start from the beginning, re-read it and count it?
2. Can you re-read a book at all to count it towards the tasks?

If the book you started before 9/1 is at least 500 pages, you can use it if you've read less than half. If it's shorter, you can certainly start back at the beginning.
re-reads are allowed unless a task prohibits them.
