30.3. Delicious Dee's Task: Seven Summits

I’ll admit that I’ve never played Risk, so when I was looking for task ideas I had a bit of reading to do. But I noticed that mountain ranges play a strategic role in the game, which got me thinking about the different ranges in the world and random factoids about them. The Seven Summits are the highest mountains on each of the 7 continents and summiting all 7 of them is regarded as a mountaineering challenge.

For this task, you will read TWO books to be determined by rolling TWO DICE. If you roll doubles, roll again until you roll two different numbers. REQUIRED: In your post, state the numbers you rolled. And because mountain climbing is a huge risk, take one with me, both books must be by authors who are new to you in the Fall 2014 challenge. You may not use the same author twice for this task.

Books with the genre childrens or kids on the main page may not be used for this task.

Option 1
The first person to complete the Seven Summits was Richard Bass in April 1985. Read a book that was first published in 1985

Option 2
In 1992, Junko Tabei was the first woman to complete the Seven Summits (she was also the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest). Read a book by a Japanese author or set in Japan (the author must have either been born in Japan, or if you pick setting, at least 50% of the book needs to be set in Japan

Option 3
In 1992, Susan Ershler and her husband became the first married couple to complete the challenge. Read a book that was written by 2 people. The book must be a single work, not a collection of stories. Examples: Ilona Andrews – husband/wife writing team; Jefferson Bass. The writers may be two writers listed individually, or writing under one pen name, but both authors must be new to you.

Option 4
Between May 2006 and December 2011, multiple individuals between the age of 15 and 29 completed the challenge. Read a book that was published when its author was between the ages of 15 and 29.
Required: Provide the author's age when the book was published - if GR does not have the author's birthday, provide external verification.

Option 5
In January 1996, American Chris Haver became the first person to climb and ski on all the slopes. Read a book that has an individual engaged in a winter sport on the cover (skiing, ice skating).
REQUIRED: Include the cover in your post.

Here's a list of winter sports to help you identify them.


Option 6
In May 2010, AC Sherpa summited Everest as the seventh and final peak in the Challenge, having completed all 7 in 42 climbing days. Read a book that is either book 4 or 2 in a series, as designated on Goodreads.

Just to verify ... even though BOTH authors are Goodreads authors, I can still claim only ONE GR ticket for this book.

I was also wondering about this. I am the type of person who is ocd about reading series in order, even when people say you don't need to. I just cannot skip the first book. That is the one that sets up an entire series.

also works and yes, even if both authors are GR authors, you can only claim 1 ticket

i'm going to say no to snow walking, it isn't really a winter "sport"

going to say yes to this one, because ice climbing, while not on the list, is definately only a sport that could occur in the winter/extreme cold weather

Option 4: Angel Landing by Alice Hoffman

The book was published in 1980 when the author was 28

AND
Option 6: Chilled by Kendra Elliot (Bone Secrets #2)

Both authors are new to me for the Fall 2014 challenge

If these work then I need to find somewhere to plug in book 1 of the Kendra Elliot book. It has been the new author part of your task that has had me flummoxed.

I'm having a harder time with Option 3. I have a few collaboration titles but none where both of the authors are new to me.

Anyone have any romance genre suggestions for Option 3?

I also had a lot of trouble with the new-to-you part. I rolled a 3 and a 4. I have settled on -
3. Book by two authors Roseanna by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahloo (I hope the approval for the second book in the series also works for the first).
4. Now in November (I was going to use this for another task, then read the blurb and found she was only 24 when she wrote it).

I have to agree with you. I never read a series out of order so I guess this option is not a viable one for me.

If I roll a 6 option 6 will be an impossible challenge. I never real a series out of order. So if I roll a six may I roll again?

Lucky me -- I got a 1 & 3.

Option 1 : The Handmaid's Tale which I wanted to read for the Spring challenge and just won't be able to get to, so I'm happy to shuffle it along to this task. Margaret Atwood - I've not read any of her stuff, although I seem to have shelved quite a few on my TBR list.

Option 3 : The Documents in the Case by Dorothy L. Sayers, Robert Eustace I've never even heard of either of these authors, but apparently, both are/were quite prolific. I'm looking forward to reading something they did together.

All three are new to me, and I'm looking forward to making "new friends" with authors I don't know! Thanks for the challenge!

I just needed to say this because it was slightly scary! I happened to be sitting next to a Yahtzee box, so I rolled two dice from that and got 4 and 6. Then I noticed the link to the dice roller, so I was going to do that and use those numbers but I got 4 and 6 again!!

for clarification on #6 - you may read a book by your new to your author elsewhere in this challenge - they just need to be new to you this season - so you could read a #1 for a task, and then a #2 for this one

Oh my God! I just rolled the dice four times! First time I got 3 and 3! Second time I got 6 and 6! Third time I got 5 and 5!!!!

Fourth time was a little reasonable though: 4 and 3 :P
