Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) Welcome to your discussion and recommendation sharing thread for Q1 of 2019

As a reminder, you will be partners from January 1st - March 31st

~Pick 2-5 recommendations for your partner each month and from those selections they will read at least one. You will do the same from their selections for you.

~Share your thoughts either as you read or when you finish with your partner. Whichever works better for you.

~It is up to the two of you if you want your curator to pick only from your tbr or if you are fine with them not sticking to a shelf.

Ian (setaian) Hi Aqsa, I'll send you a friend invite shortly. Then I'll have a look through your books and come up with a few recs.

message 3: by Aqsa (new)

Aqsa (her_747) | 96 comments Hey Ian, I'm going to do the same :)

message 4: by Ian (last edited Dec 24, 2018 09:13PM) (new)

Ian (setaian) OK so as I tend to do a couple that I'm certain you will like and a few that are a little out there...based on other things you like but the links aren't always obvious.

1. Uprooted by Naomi Novik

2. On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta

3. Tomorrow, When the War Began by John Marsden

4. Sleight of Hand by Mark Henwick

5. A Merciful Death by Kendra Elliot

message 5: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) If there is nothing in there that appeals to you, let me know and I'll try again.

message 6: by Aqsa (new)

Aqsa (her_747) | 96 comments I'll definitely get to Uprooted!
I'm afraid I don't have the others. I'll see if I can get them.

You only need to read one of them.
Uprooted is a great choice. I loved that book.

message 8: by Aqsa (new)

Aqsa (her_747) | 96 comments I fear we don't have many books in common.
So, I'm going to recommend some. See if they interest you (I'll try not to recommend violent books):

Legend
I Am the Messenger
Heartless
Circe
White Fang
The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue
Dark Matter

message 9: by Aqsa (new)

Aqsa (her_747) | 96 comments These are from various genres.

Yes, but we can read more :)

Ian (setaian) There is a trick with me.
You've figured out that I don't do excessive violence.
I tell you the rest of it at the end of the month.

There are a few books you've listed that look interesting. I'm tossing up between Legend, Heartless and the Gentleman's Guide.

message 12: by Aqsa (new)

Aqsa (her_747) | 96 comments Waiting for the month to end then, though if you meant this month, it's almost over.

Let me know if you'd like something else :)

Ian (setaian) The Gentleman's Guide was leaving me a little flat for a while. It was all just a bit ho hum....but then he stole the box and the book completely turned around. It's gone from 2~3 Stars to 4~5 Stars. I'm loving it.
They've just arrived in Spain.

Haha, yes it takes a fantastic turn there! It's awesome!

message 15: by Aqsa (new)

Aqsa (her_747) | 96 comments It'll only get more interesting :)

message 16: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) Loved it. Just one clicked A Lady's Guide!

message 17: by Aqsa (new)

Aqsa (her_747) | 96 comments Ian wrote: "Loved it. Just one clicked A Lady's Guide!"

Yay! I am hoping to read A Lady's Guide real soon! I loved the first book too much to miss it.

message 18: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) A Lady's Guide felt a little unsure of itself. It was pretty good but I think the author didn't really know where it was going or maybe she was uncomfortable with the lesbian subplot and couldn't commit herself to it. Not really sure.

message 19: by Aqsa (new)

Aqsa (her_747) | 96 comments I'm sorry it didn't come up to the standard of book 1. Did it go anywhere in the end?

message 20: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) It was good...just a little wobbly on where it was going.

message 21: by Aqsa (new)

Aqsa (her_747) | 96 comments Good :) I still haven't started Uprooted and I have a question about it: Is it a happy book? (Because I am kinda disturbed right now and don't want to read something that will depress me further-I'll read it in Feb then :))

message 22: by Aqsa (new)

Aqsa (her_747) | 96 comments I'm sorry, I remember reading your bio and learning that you do not like violent books.
I understand that you do not often talk about it, thank you for sharing and I'll read Uprooted, just needed a warning. The last book I read really got me feeling low for a couple of days, and I don't want to sink deeper.

At the Stroke of Midnight seems like something I'd like right now, I'll see if I can get it.

Thank you so much.

message 23: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) I haven't had a chance to think of February's books yet. My mum has been in hospital after a doctor (not her regular doctor) prescribed Oxycontin for pain, she's 93. She's doing better now but when I called the ambulance she was shaking and completely incoherent.

I'll put them up this weekend.

message 24: by Aqsa (new)

Aqsa (her_747) | 96 comments No, you don't have to.

I'm so sorry about it. I hope she feels somewhat better really soon :/

How r u?

message 25: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) Aqsa wrote: "How r u?"

Not bad. And mum is doing a little better. She's still in pain and much more muddled in the morning and evening but doing OK during the day.

Do you have any preferences? What sort of books you would like to read?

message 26: by Aqsa (new)

Aqsa (her_747) | 96 comments I pray she feels better soon.

No preferences. Whatever you love. I am starting Uprooted too.
