Lee Threlkeld (suspiria56) | 7 comments Ok, so really excited. Been a member of this group in the hope to find great horror reads but haven't got involved. When I decide to do one of my top 'wants' wins out, SWAN SONG. So can't wait....just gutted my local library hasn't got THE WINTER PEOPLE although will probably buy it.
Anyways, how does the reading work throughout the month? Do folk chat about updates etc.
Anyways, diving in now to my audible version of SS. Thankx much x

Latasha (latasha513) | 11974 comments Mod
yes Lee, that's exactly how it works. you can post about where you are in the book (chapter 10, 20% mark, page 32, like that) and what you are thoughts, feelings, expectations are for the book and what ever else you want to add. Swan Song and the Winter People are both good. i hope you enjoy them!

i love Swan Song but to be honest, i don't like the beginning of it, all the presidential stuff.

Judy Pancoast (judyindisguise711) I read this book back when it was first published. It remains the only book to ever have made me burst out bawling. Listened to it just last year. I’ll listen again, it’s that good... plus his new one hasn’t quite been released yet!

Alabama Vee (alabamavee) | 123 comments I am Really enjoying re-reading/listening to this such a great epic story with some of my favourite and most awful characters.
I am flying through at 15 hours already.

Judy Pancoast (judyindisguise711) I started listening again this morning at the gym. Even after reading it twice over many years and listening to it just last year (or was it the year before) there are things I can't remember. The book is just so dense with so many characters, but I love it. A lot of people have compared this book to The Stand, but I think that even though there are similarities, Swan Song has the edge. The characters are just so darned interesting and the situations....like the movie theater....wow....so creepy it's stayed with me for all of these years.
I want to be careful about posting spoilers but how can we talk about it then? What's the protocol here?

I agree, I prefer Swan Song. Use spoiler tags < spoiler >
Blah blah blah < / spoiler > without the spaces of coarse.

Judy Pancoast (judyindisguise711) Tom Stechshulte is the perfect narrator for SS. He also reads Cormac McCarthy’s novels. Do you guys like his style?

Lance Dale | 71 comments I loved The Stand; however, I'm enjoying this one much more. There really aren't any lulls in the story so far.

Bri (spookyreadsbybri) | 17 comments Any Parks and Rec fans? Every time I hear ' Colonel Macklin'
I think about Burt Macklin (lol)

I'm a big fan of Tom Stechulte's. He also reads Greg Iles' books.

I love this, Makes him a little more bearable.
Such an awful villain

I think he is great has so many good voices

I love everything I've heard narrated by him. It's amazing how much a narrator can add to or detract from a story.

That is the real truth, right there.

David HK | 24 comments I discovered that if you have a Kindle E-book and an Echo, you can ask Alexa to read it to you. Kind of like a poor man's audible. Works for the Alexa app on your phone as well.

Judy Pancoast (judyindisguise711) All done. Man, what an epic read. So much heart. So, what do you all think of The Man with the Scarlet Eye? His powers are limited, so he’s probably not Satan himself. Then what is he?

Latasha (latasha513) | 11974 comments Mod
I think he is the devil himself.

Tom Mathews | 144 comments I've been listening to this for a few weeks with a couple breaks to listen to other books. I'm only up to the beginning of Part 7 so I may be listening to this through February.

I've read a few of McCammon's but this is the first one where I detect a lot of similarity with Stephen King. I'm not sure I'm as attached to the characters as some of the readers are.

With his having been a POW in Vietnam, I wondered if McCammon was thinking of McCain.

Daniel James | 62 comments I have a hard time choosing between this or Stinger, but both had a huge impact on me as a kid. McCammon is disgracefully underrated!! Personally, I'd choose Swan Song over King's the Stand any day. So many awesome moments and characters in this book, but for the life of me I can barely recall any of the Stand. Each to their own, but if I'm going to invest a lot of time in a novel of epic, apocalyptic scope and the spectacle of good versus evil...well, I expect a little more spectacle.
In conclusion, this book is a monster!
