Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments I decided next year was about only reading books I've paid money for, and then promptly bought another 20! There are more I want to buy too! I normally do quite a lot of sub-categories, but paring that back this year. I also have a lot of books with over 1000 pages, so have reduced my number of books but increased my number of pages. Am really looking forward to a good year of reading.

No of books

54/45 - completed

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments And I hope you love every one of them, Desley!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Me too Anna! There are a few I'm not sure why I bought them, so won't force myself to persevere if I don't like them

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4832 comments Wow, Desley. May you find good stories.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Thanks

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Finally finished my first book of the year, would only give it 3*. However I am half way through my first book of Jim's and loving it.

message 14: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments That's good. Just been very annoyed by a book!

message 15: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I'm going to do another challenge to read all my paid for books too. I did it a few years ago and read most of them but they are slowly building up again. It's a realistic list though, there's not too many. I've written them all down so I can keep track of them. Going to keep last years challenge going too and try to clear out all the free books I bought in 2011

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Good luck Jud - once I have finished these, then I'm going back to the free ones, there are still hundreds of those.

message 17: by Desley (Cat fosterer) (last edited Feb 03, 2019 08:20AM) (new)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Going off the page tracker, even though I get it to a different amount! I have been naughty and bought 2 books this week though, and there are still 2 I really want to buy! Also just realised that 3 books I've bought this year are all non-fiction, and the ones I will read to the cats, so more likely to get read, so that target will be smashed. The second book I read was interesting (The Innocent by Harlen Coben) - I read one of his Myron Bolitar books years ago and wasn't keen, which is why this one had been waiting so long, but I enjoyed it.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Wow, am ahead of schedule, despite feeling like I haven't read too much - although I have bought 6 books this week!!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Still ahead, although have bought 7 paperbacks since I last posted, oops! Two appear to be non-fiction, so will save those for next year.

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Well done Desley. Yes, I keep buying books that I happen to see in a charity shop .... though I have resisted some and left them there.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Pam wrote: "Well done Desley. Yes, I keep buying books that I happen to see in a charity shop .... though I have resisted some and left them there."

I haven't been good at that this year, think when I take some stuff to the charity shop this week I'll leave my purse at home!

message 23: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Desley, did you read any of the Roald Dahl books yet? My book club has chosen Deception as our next read.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Yes, I have read War, which I was slightly disappointed with at first as the majority was Going Solo, which I have already read, but then I realised I didn't actually own it, and I felt differently reading it as an adult

message 25: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments That's good it wasn't a complete waste

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Another one finished - The Early Classics of Agatha Christie - really enjoyed the first story, but struggled through the second story.

message 27: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Oh dear, I have read a few of hers and some have really enjoyed while others were a damp squib.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Well, gave up on a book this week, something I rarely do, but I have so many books from favourite authors that I'm not wasting time on books I'm not enjoying and I got to page 143 and realised I didn't care about the characters and didn't like the style of writing, even though I appreciated why it was done like that. I have finished 1 and started 2 this week, House Rules by Jodi Picoult and one of those amusing doctor anecdote books. Downside is I have bought kind of 3 books - I say kind of, I have paid for 3, but one is a collection - someone mentioned they were halfway through the Wizard of Oz series, I thought there were only 2 books, but was told there are 14! I went on Amazon and got a collection of all 14 for 49p!

message 29: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Ha! That was me, sorrynotsorry at least the Oz books are short!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments No, I’m kind of glad you did Jud! I had to be vague as I was updating the challenge in more than one place. I bought the Mary Poppins set (also didn’t know there were 6 of those!), but I did struggle to read all those in one go, so might stagger the Oz books.

message 31: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Yes, I read listened to the first 4 in one go then took a break so I wouldn't sicken myself. Then listened to the next 3 before taking another break, I'm only 1 hour 40 minutes into my new book so it'll probably be a while before I go back to Oz.

I listened to the first Mary Poppins book but I haven't read the sequels but I do intend on getting around to them at some point

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments What did you think of Mary Poppins?

message 33: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I enjoyed it but I knew that it was very different from Disney's version. It was a lot more fantastical than I expected

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Ah – I think I was oblivious to the difference, even though I’m sure I read them after watching Saving Mr Banks.

message 35: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Haven't read them since I was a kid but impression is the character is much darker than in the original Disney version, don't know about the latest remake.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Pam wrote: "Haven't read them since I was a kid but impression is the character is much darker than in the original Disney version, don't know about the latest remake."

Yes, not the sugar sweet Disney version, no wonder they fell out over it

message 37: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4832 comments The sweet Disney version is for children; its lessons are subtle and basic. Movies for grownups are not usually suitable for children, at least not small ones.

Some manage to get the parents involved at one level, and the kids at another, at the same time. Most don't.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Done better than I expected this month, just need to read some of my 'new' authors.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Another 2 read, but 11 bought this week, don't know what has happened to my self control this year! I have altered 2 of my targets, the number of books read to 34 as I've read 4 short stories, and 4 non-fiction as I've already read 3 and have more to read.

message 40: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Well done - and I'm having the same problem as you Desley. Keep picking up the "odd book" when I am meant to concentrate on reading those I already have.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Thanks Pam, I made the mistake of trying to count how many books I’ve bought this year, although some of the paperbacks might have been just before Christmas, hope they are or I’ve bought 50 this year, and some are compilations. As my receptionist pointed out, all these new books are distracting from the ones I already had to read.

message 42: by Desley (Cat fosterer) (last edited May 27, 2019 08:55AM) (new)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Another one finished, Darkhouse I only finished it because it hit targets for the monthly pages challenge, and it was an easy read, but couldn't tell you much about the story.

message 43: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Yes I dread to think how many I've bought though I have read some of them. But as you say a distraction from what I already have and should be reading!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments At least we'll never run out of things to read!

message 45: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments LOL!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Jud wrote: "Desley, did you read any of the Roald Dahl books yet? My book club has chosen Deception as our next read."

I started that this week, enjoying it. Wish I'd bought Cruelty rather than War.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Another finished and none bought this week. Have slowed down a bit due to an eye issue, hopefully that is improving and the wait for various appointments will help me find plenty of time!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments Another one finished, unfortunately I bought two more this week!

message 49: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Whoops!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12591 comments I know, must stop doing it!
