Hailey Thompson (haileymary) | 169 comments Hi everyone! I’m Hailey and I’m the captain of this wonderful team. This is my second year doing Uno, first time as a captain. I have some ideas of how we can complete our spreadsheet but I’m always open to suggestions. If any of you have ideas or suggestions from how you have completed the uno challenge before that seemed to work well, please share.
I’m so excited for this challenge to start!
I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone better and see what everyone is reading as I’m always looking for new books to dive into.
Everyone has 48 hours to check in, after that time is up, I will send you all a message and if I have not heard back from you within another 48 hours, you may get replaced and I don’t think any of us wants that to happen.

Kristie | 5929 comments Hi Hailey! Thank you for taking on the captain duties this round. I look forward to playing with you all. :)

Kristie | 5929 comments I think the last time I completed the challenge everyone just said which books they were going to read and for what available tasks they fit. We completed hands according to the order they were given as best as we could. Basically, if you claimed a task, you were obligated to finish it on time and if for some reason you couldn't, then you let the team know with enough notice that one of the faster readers could read a substitute.

We filled in the spreadsheet according to what people said they would read, then just added the date read and points after it was completed. That way, everyone could look at the spreadsheet to see what was still needed. That, of course, would require you to be following the thread closely. I remember spending more time updating the spreadsheet than reading.

Also, a second reporting thread is helpful. I don't know if they plan to do that for this challenge, but it helps to not lose any books that have been completed if you keep the chit chat and book discussion in this thread and the completed books reported separately.

message 10: by Hailey (new)

Hailey Thompson (haileymary) | 169 comments Last year my team all claimed a few cards in the spreadsheet that they wanted to complete and highlighted the line they claimed with their own specified color. After that, every time you read a book, you would post all the cards that the book fit and the team captain would enter them into the spreadsheet and was then able to easily swap books around. We never completed cards in a specific order, but at the end of the month we’d move things around so everything would fit in order. If any of that makes sense haha.

message 11: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (last edited Jan 13, 2019 06:47PM) (new)

Kristie | 5929 comments So everyone on the team had the ability to edit the spreadsheet to highlight?

We also posted all the tasks the books would fit and moved things around as needed, so it makes perfect sense!

I've already started going through my planned reads to see where they fit. :)

message 12: by Hailey (new)

Hailey Thompson (haileymary) | 169 comments Yeah, we created a duplicate spreadsheet that everyone could edit and then the captain would move over that information to the official spreadsheet.

message 13: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5929 comments Oh that's smart. I'll do it however it works easiest for you.

message 14: by Hailey (new)

Hailey Thompson (haileymary) | 169 comments I can do it any way. I just want to find a way that everyone is okay with and what will be the easiest for everyone. I’m open to all suggestions and ideas. I don’t know what I’m completely doing because a lot of this is still new to me.

message 15: by Hailey (new)

Hailey Thompson (haileymary) | 169 comments Here is our reporting thread:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

When you finish a book, please post it in that thread so we can use this one to just talk.

Helke (mogelpackung) | 1389 comments Hi. I´m Helke from Germany. I´ve never played UNO before. But I do a lot of challenges so it should be no problem for me to adapt. Did I see it correctly that the hands for february are already inserted in the spreadsheet for us to puzzle out who is reading wich book? Or are that only examples?

message 17: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5929 comments Hi, Helke! I believe those are our hands for February. I've already looked into where some of my books can fit. We just need to wait until we decide how we are going to go about it.

Helke (mogelpackung) | 1389 comments Kristie wrote: "Hi, Helke! I believe those are our hands for February. I've already looked into where some of my books can fit. We just need to wait until we decide how we are going to go about it."

So maybe a seperate ss where we propose the books we want to read would be a way to go? So everybody can look wich books are still needed and look at his shelfs to find them. I seldom plan 4 weeks ahaid with my books. It is often where the fancy takes me and I started another challenge yesterday where I have to read a lot for and only know wich letters are needed for one week. So I will not know wich books I will have read until the 1th of february.

message 19: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5929 comments I’m the opposite. I usually have a list of books to read the month before. I have too many challenges and group reads (both online and in real life) to not plan it out a bit.

I can understand that, but if you get new letters to fit into your bookselection each week you can´t plan for longer than one week. I need to keep at least my book with letters like XYZ for that challenge. I´ll figure something out for me so I´ll read my quota. Don´t worry.

message 21: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5929 comments I know, Helke. I've played before. There's enough slots that you can make most books fit and I do swap things around as needed.

message 22: by Hailey (new)

Hailey Thompson (haileymary) | 169 comments I will create a second spreadsheet here soon and share it with everyone so we can all edit at start figuring out what books we are going to read.

message 23: by Lady Tea (new)

Lady Tea | 99 comments Hi, I'm Fantasia!

This is my first time playing UNO, so spreadsheet-wise, I'm not sure what that is, but from what I've gathered, it's where we record who's going to be reading what books correspond to what UNO cards, etc. The rules are kind of lost on me, but that's okay since I'm sure that once I experience what it is, I'll get the gist of things.

I've already sent a friend request to the captain and co-captain of this team, so that's step one.

Step two I guess would be planning out the spreadsheet for the first hand that they've posted for us?

message 24: by BarbaraAnn (new)

BarbaraAnn Hi,

I'm BarbaraAnn. This will be my second time playing UNO. I'm ok with any option that's agreeable. With the game last year, we kept a spreadsheet and everyone noted the categories that would fit. I think the main exception was the hard cards, such as the colors (I'm waiting impatiently for a yellow card that my one yellow book will match)

message 25: by Hailey (new)

Hailey Thompson (haileymary) | 169 comments Welcome everyone! I'm so excited for this challenge to start. I'm glad we have some new people who have never done the Uno Challenge before, this is one of my favorite ones I have ever done because almost any book you read will fit at least one card, which makes it really nice.

I created a spreadsheet with our hands for February, March and April that everyone should be able to access and edit so we can start filling out what books we're planning on reading. On the right side, I created a key with everyone's name and a color, feel free to change your color, so when you choose a card you want, you can highlight it in your assigned color. Once that card/book is completed, there is another color to use to highlight that cell to let BarbaraAnn and me know that it's completed so we can move that info over to the official spreadsheet. If that doesn't make any sense, please tell me so I can try to clarify.

Here is the link to the doc we can all edit:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

message 26: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (last edited Jan 14, 2019 08:09PM) (new)

Kristie | 5929 comments Do you want us to fill in the information too or just highlight the cells? I just tried it out with highlighting. Let me know if that's what you had in mind.

I added three books (with draw 2s), but will probably do more. I just wanted to give others a chance to choose the cards they'd like before adding too many.

I think that is just fine. If you want to add the book you’re planning on reading, you can. I just want to make sure everyone can choose a couple cards they want to do work on.

Right, that's why I just added three for now and I'll add more later. We can always move them around if we need to too.

isidorakay | 4 comments Hi everyone!! I haven’t read all the comments posted here yet but will do now! Just wanted to let you know that this is my first time attempting the UNO Challenge so any any helpful tips are welcome :)

message 30: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5929 comments Hi isidorakay! Welcome to UNO! I hope you love it. :)

I noticed that you selected some cards from hand 2. Can you add the draw 2 to your color too? Draw 2 is basically a freebie. You get double points for one book in the hand. The wild card is worth the most points, so whatever book you read for the wild card, you can also add it to the draw 2 and get the points again. Hope that makes sense.

(Hope I'm not stepping on toes here, Hailey!)

message 31: by Hailey (new)

Hailey Thompson (haileymary) | 169 comments You are not stepping on any toes. I appreciate all the help I can get plus I’m really bad at explaining things.

Hailey Thompson (haileymary) | 169 comments Welcome isidorakay! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. I’m so glad you’re on our team!

message 33: by isidorakay (new)

isidorakay | 4 comments Hi Kristie and thank you for your warm welcome! (Same goes for Hailey :)
Ok now I get it :) Alright, so I’ll go ahead and highlight the Draw 2 card as well in hand 2!
Also, I’ve been stalking your “read” books 👀 checking whether I have any of them in my library that I haven’t read and I’ve noticed Hailey (Hi Hailey 👋) has read “Art of War” so I’m gonna read that for Reverse in one of the February hands! (Hint: I like planning🙄)

message 34: by Lady Tea (new)

Lady Tea | 99 comments Okay everyone, I finally added a few books to the spreadsheet, except that I'm really not sure if I did things correctly or if I understood the rules correctly--especially for the wild cards, draw 2, and whatnot--so please correct me if I'm wrong in anything. >.<

message 35: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (last edited Jan 16, 2019 06:18PM) (new)

Kristie | 5929 comments Hi A.M.G.! Welcome!

I think Hailey wants us to put our books in for only one slot, even if they fit more than one unless we're using it for a draw 2's. Then, after when we report them we list the other options they can fit in case we need to move them.

Draw 2 is the only card we don't have to read for. We can use one book for two cards in the same hand and blank out the draw 2. So, one book actually completes 3 cards, but we only get points for 2.

Wild card means you have to read another book for one of the cards in that hand. So, you don't get double points for one book, you just have to choose one of the cards to complete again.

Hailey, please tell me if I have any of this wrong. That's the way I recall it.

edit: I edited above because I remembered the Draw 2's wrong. A.M.G. you did the draw 2 the correct way. I found this note on the spreadsheet:

"**The Draw Two card will automatically be counted and your book can count for two other cards. Although you don't get points for the 'draw 2' card, you have the benefit of having points for two cards with just one book, and you complete the hand faster :) "

So, I guess the book used has to fit two cards in the same hand in order to use the draw 2. I looked at the example and our planning is a little messed up.

isidorakay, is it ok if I steal your reverse from hand one to use the draw 2 and give you the reverse from 12? It won't change your books, just where we score it.

Also, I moved my second book out of hand 1 because we will need another book that fits two cards for the draw 2. If I'm understanding correctly this time, the book will need to fit two of the three remaining cards (3, 7, skip). Maybe one of Helke or isidorakay's books will work? My book did not fit an additional spot, so I moved it so that someone else can use it if needed.

We are going to run into the same issue with hand two, unless Helke's draw 2 book also fits 7 yellow.

Kristie | 5929 comments Hailey, I forget... how do we judge if a book is red or blue enough? Is there a certain percentage we need? I usually use tineye to give me the percentages.

I was thinking about reading Killers of the Flower Moon The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann for the 1 red task. The cover looks a bit orange to me, but tineye says it's 65% red. What do you think? Should we get a ruling from the UNO Pixie?

message 37: by Helke (new)

Helke (mogelpackung) | 1389 comments I just reserved a few spots on the ss. Switch me around if you like. Don´t know if I´ have a book that fits a 7 yellow.

Hi - I saw a reference from one of the mods that mentioned needing to be over 50%. To me, your book looks mostly red so I'd say go with tineye's 65%.

BarbaraAnn Hi AMG - I noticed you marked "any Kate daniels book" for hand 1? If you decide to go with that, the book could also count for reverse (I've read all the books in that series) and the draw 2 in that hand.

isidorakay has already highlighted the other reverse in that hand. I am using one reverse and can only do the draw 2 I have highlighted if it opens up. Otherwise, I can let the cards go if someone else needs them.

Edit: Never mind. I moved my book out of that hand. The reverse is open if she'd like to use it now.

Thank you, Hailey, for reaching out to me. I would have been very sad if I missed UNO this year. I played it last year, and another time a few years ago. I've never done the highlighting thing, but I'm up for trying it. My only thought is that it could make it a little more difficult later if we decide to move things around...

Thanks, I think I will take up the reverse and draw 2 cards, in that case. That will leave the second Draw 2 card open, but is Kristie maybe using that one?

Anyways, I think I may have a book for the 7 yellow card, so I hope that it counts. My Watchmen book is mostly yellow, and the main villain's last name starts with a V, so...yes, I hope that's good enough.

message 49: by BarbaraAnn (new)

BarbaraAnn Hi - it depends on the length of the graphic novel

Books must be more than 100 pages in length and Children's books, Graphic Novels, Manga, Cook Books, Plays and Poetry books can not be used unless by word count they can be verified as more than 25,000 words using arbookfind.com or more than 3 hours of audio using a reputable website (e.g. audible, overdrive)
