YA Addicted Book Club discussion

Brittany and I will be starting City of Fallen Angels this weekend! I am so excited but also nervous because CoG just had a great ending 😬 lol.

Woo!! I have been putting this one off for forever as I have heard it is pretty bad and definitely the weakest of the series. But having someone to read it with will help!
Also it has been awhile since I read the original trilogy so I may need a few refreshers :)

Start of Chapter 5 (view spoiler)[ So Simon really needs to get his head straight. I feel for him after his moms reaction to him being a vampire though. Think he is going to give in to Camille's request? And what about this Kyle guy? He is a little too convenient dont you think?

Also what the heck is going on with Jace and I wish he would just tell Clary what was happening rather than leaving her in the dark... hasnt he learned yet that secrets are bad??? (hide spoiler)]

Start of Chapter 11 (view spoiler)[ Clary?! WHY!!!! You admit it yourself that you are bad for running of in to trouble and yet what do you do? Go into the creepy "church" by yourself. How stupid are you? I get it you are hurting, Jace is being an absolute dick but how is being TSTL going to help anything??

Also Simon finally got what was coming to him, both girls currently hate him. I did not realize that Kyle or should I say Jordan was Maia's ex who turned her who very much so is till hung up on her. This is one convoluted "love" creation, is it a square or something else at this point?

Jace is actually managing to make me hate him right now. His book moments are so pointless not adding anything. He is brooding and not talking. Being pointlessly cryptic. He sees Clary makes out with her, almost rips her clothes off on multiple occasions and then takes off telling her nothing. Im about done with him.

What did you think about Simon's first feeding of a human? Will he get addicted to the feeling? How will she cope, are there after effects from just one feeding? (hide spoiler)]

I finished it yesterday. While I enjoyed it way more than I expected to and I will finish the series, what the hell was with that ending?!

(view spoiler)[I agree! I have to confess something... I wasn't the biggest fan of Simon in book 1 and 2 because he just kept getting in the way of Jace and Clary. But by the end of book 2 and book 3 I was starting to like him. This book? He's being a tool. Lol.

As for Camille... idk. Between having read TID and watching the TV show, I just don't know about her OR Raphael. I kinda think she is telling the truth... but idk yet. You probably know by now 😅 lol (hide spoiler)]

After having left you hanging (I'm so sorry! 🙈) I finally started CoFA in earnest! I'm just at the beginning of ch. 7... (view spoiler)[The Maia/Isabelle thing with Simon, I totally agree with you! He needs to pick one or the other because it just isn't fair to them. I'm not loving that.

Camille... at first I thought she was telling the truth, but in the back of my mind the thought that she could be lying was definitely there. And now after Clary did the thing with the corpse... idk what to think. It almost sounds like she's trying to start something. Idk.

The reaction Simon's mother had broke my heart! I'm starting to warm up to Simon, and the only reason I didn't cry in this part was because I was out reading in public. Lol.

I just got to the part where we find out Kyle is a werewolf. At first I honestly thought it was Sebastian in disguise... again. I honestly don't think he died at the end of CoG. Anyway, as for Kyle, idk why, but I have a strong suspicion it's Maia's brother. When Simon first arrived at his apartment he was telling him about his Isabelle/Maia issue, and Kyle, for a split second, seemed upset by it. Why? Why would he care? Unless he's Maia's brother! But also, from what we learned about Maia and her brother, he was an absolute asshole, so idk why he would care now? Anyway, that's my theory. Lol.

And Jace 😩 The dreams he keeps having... it's hurting my soul. But I do agree that he should tell Clary! He's being an idiot! Instead of talking things out he's avoiding her and hanging out with Simon and this Kyle guy? Such a Herondale thing to do 🙄 Lol.

Oh! Speaking of Simon and Jace... that scene where Simon drags Jace down to the grocery store to buy him food... idk why but I just thought it was so cute! They supposedly hate each other, but here is Simon taking care of Jace, just like Jace saved Simon and inadvertently turned him into a Daylighter. I just love that. Lol. (Although, granted, Jace only saved him for Clary. Lol. But I do feel like they're starting to warm up to one another now.) (hide spoiler)]

Now that I'm not in that awful reading slump and am actually in the mood for TMI, I am really, really enjoying this! Even though the things that are happening kind of make me want to cry a little. Lol.

(view spoiler)[First of all, I need to correct myself re: Kyle. Maia apparently had a ton of shitty men in her life because I couldn't keep the boyfriend and brother straight. Lol. I couldn't remember which asshole was the one who turned her but apparently it was the ex-boyfriend... who I actually really liked as well! I can't imagine what they go through when they Turn, but I agree Brittany, I hope he and Maia are able to work things out.

As for Jace, I am so totally completely biased that I don't think I could ever hate him. Lol. He is just one of my favorite characters, just ever! BUT he was incredibly frustrating in this book, keeping secrets and just acting like a moron. While I loved the intense make out sessions between him and Clary, I also agree that he needed to stop and just TALK TO HER! What the hell, dude! Get it together!

And Simon, I have a feeling he's gonna be fine, especially with the help of Kyle/Jordan and maybe the Shadowhunters. (Also, there is a book in the Shadowhunter Chronicles that I believe is in his POV mostly? Anyway, if you don't know about it don't even look it up cause it's super spoiler-y! I already know what ends up happening with him... I don't know how he gets there, but I know the end result 🤷‍♀️ At least I think I do. Lol.)

One of the main reasons I want to catch up on the Shadowhunter Chronicles is because I REALLY want to read because I just adore Magnus and Alec! They are just one of my favorite couple of all time! They are so cute and I love them!

And that ending... I, too, am not okay. 😩 I was looking forward to normal, playful Jace as well!!! Ugh! Poor Jace! And I knew Sebastian was gonna be back! I knew it! Just not in this capacity! 😭 Him possessing Jace I was not expecting and I don't like it and just why?! 😭😭 (hide spoiler)]

All that being said, I loved this book! Even though it totally ripped my heart to shreds. Ugh!

Definitely do not look into it! I own pretty much all of the Shadowhunter books, so when I bought that one in particular I couldn't help but peek at the synopsis and, well, I ended up spoiling it for myself. Lol.

Oh another book I'm really excited to get to is ! Magnus is such a fun character! I love him! I'm just not sure when I can read these books without having to worry about spoilers! Like, should I read all of The Mortal Instruments AND The Dark Artifices before I can get to Red Scrolls?? I just don't know 🤷‍♀️ lol

There's a reading list order somewhere! Its how I decided to read the 3 Infernal Devices before reading MI 4.

I started CoLS this morning and I finished reading chapter 5.

(view spoiler)[I'd love to know what your opinion is on the Alec/Magnus situation. On the one hand I totally get why Alec is freaking out re: Magnus's immortality, but to freak out about the number of lovers he's had in the past? Idk about that... it's not Magnus's fault he's lived for so long. And Alec admits this, so what the heck? It's a little bit annoying.

Oh and Jace... 😩 I was not expecting to hear from him so soon, but omg he was just in Clary's bedroom! The way he's acting all buddy-buddy with Sebastian... wtf! At first I wondered whether he was just faking it to get on Seb's good side or whatever, but after the way he talked about Seb to Clary, about how Seb would never hurt anyone Jace loves... Ummm NO! Obviously Seb is possessing/influencing him in some way... right? This is not the real Jace, not with the way he was acting around Clary when they were alone. This is hurting me so much. I miss Jace! 😭 (hide spoiler)]

And without spoilers, this is basically me up to this point: 😭😭😭 lol

The Alec/Magnus thing was very annoying.

Today I read up to ch. 11... well, actually I'm right in the middle of ch. 11 just after Alec does the "Who are you again?" joke. Lol. Honestly, a joking Alec is kind of my favorite. Lol.

(view spoiler)[BUT the fact that he's seeing Camille behind Magnus's back, WHAT?! Dude! I had an inkling in the last book that taking away Magnus's immortality was the thing that was gonna be the... solution, I guess? Anyway, I just really hope that Alec is not actually considering doing this spell behind Magnus's back because WTF?! That would be so messed up! I have a feeling that Magnus might consider doing it willingly, but I just really don't want Alec to take that choice away from him. I have faith in Alec. His fixation on Magnus's past lovers is still annoying me very much, but I don't think he will accept Camille's offer. At least, I hope he doesn't. 🤞

And then the Clary/Jace thing... Oh man. So, I kind of think it was a pretty smart idea for Clary to infiltrate the boys whilst using the faerie ring, but I also think things are gonna go horribly sideways for her at some point. And then seeing Jace be himself but not really? It hurts! I just want the real Jace back! 😭 Like everytime he says something witty, he sounds like Jace and it makes me laugh, but then I remember that he's tied to Sebastian and he's not really himself and I just 😩 I really, really, REALLY hope that by the end of this book Jace is back to normal. Is that too much to ask for? 😩

Oh and Simon telling Isabelle the Star Wars story was the cutest thing! And jordan and Maia are also being super cute!

I also really liked that convo between Izzy and Jordan and Jordan telling her to go and tell Simon how she felt and that Simon would probably do the same for her as he did for Clary if she just asked. This is one of the reasons I love this series... these heartwarming character moments. And especially when it's between two characters you least expect! (hide spoiler)]

Non-spoiler update... umm, not much has changed: 😭😩😭 lol

I was right in the middle of ch. 17 before I had to stop reading this afternoon and OH MY GODS things are happening! This is not a drill! Things are happening! I honestly couldn't have stopped reading at a worse time. Lol. So I'm at the part after we drop in on Simon & co as they are arriving at their destination and we have just switched back to a Clary POV as she wakes up from a nap...

(view spoiler)[But before I get to that... Sebastian is giving me... vibes. Not great ones. The way he is acting with Clary is... it makes me feel gross? It's so strange because he's not as awful or vicious as he was in book 3, but I kind of think maybe his link to Jace is influencing that? Anyway, he just doesn't act like a sibling would and he invades her space quite a bit and it's just gross! I thought he kissed Clary in book 3 just to mess with her but idk, it's just 😬🤢 Simon and Rebecca? THAT is what a sibling relationship looks like, you creep! (That scene by the way, totally broke my heart 😩)

Oh! I almost forgot to mention Simon's brilliant plan of summoning a freaking angel. WTF. Yeah, he has the Mark, but still! I have a feeling things are gonna go wrong. I honestly would be more surprised if things didn't go wrong. Lol.

At first I thought it was a pretty good idea to go with the boys so Clary could find out what they were up to, but now... idk. Throughout most of this part of the book she found out pretty much nothing and was just hanging out with Jace and then some of the things she did were dumb. Getting high at the club? Girl, you are undercover. You do not get high when you are undercover and trying to get info! That is how you loose an important faerie ring! 🙄

And speaking of the club, all these make out scenes between Clary and Jace... I'm kind of not into them? Which is almost shocking to me because I love Jace and Clary! But I am acutely aware that Jace is not Jace and I just cannot enjoy those scenes knowing that 😩

And going back to the part about Clary just hanging out with Jace... I kind of felt like this section almost dragged a bit. Nothing was really happening. Team Good nor Team Evil had any leads... Team Good kept hitting dead end after dead end while Team Evil was just sort of... hanging out, not really telling Clary anything 🤷‍♀️ Idk, it was weird because I've never felt this way with other Cassie Clare books. Of course, this may be just me being impatient wanting Jace back already...

Which OMG I think Jace is back?!?!?! This is the part I had to stop at. Clary just woke up from a nap and Jace stumbles into the room and HE'S BACK?!?! I was so happy I nearly cried! But I was in public, so I had to hold it in. Lol. And I have a theory as to why Jace is back: so, Jace went to go see the Iron Sister to get the cup, he mentioned there was a lot of blood so I'm guessing Sebastian ordered him to kill her. There was a fight and maybe the Iron Sister slashed at Jace and broke a rune on him somewhere? That would make sense. Though Sebastian would've noticed that... unless he's hiding that he knows 🤔 I guess we'll find out. Lol. (hide spoiler)]

So with the revelation I think I'm gonna have to continue reading more tonight because I only have about 140 pages left and I cannot risk reading the rest of this book in public tomorrow. I am almost positive it will make me cry at some point so I'm gonna try and finish it tonight 😅

Okay, I just finished City of Lost Souls and I really enjoyed it! It didn't make me cry as I expected, but I did get very teary-eyed in a couple of places. I don't know how you're gonna feel about this one, Brittany, it was... well, you'll see. Lol.

(view spoiler)[First of all, JACE IS FREAKING BACK! 😭 I could not be more happy! I missed him! I honestly don't know if I could've taken another book without the real Jace... it was torture! I'm also glad they did that ceremony thing they do on newborns... finally! And the heavenly fire thing is an interesting development. I think it would be kinda cool if he could use it as a weapon... against Sebastian. Lol. I hate him! He is just... ugh! I thought he wasn't all that bad because Jace might have been influencing him through the link, but NO! He's just really good at lying! Also, whatever he has going on with Clary is super disgusting and totally not okay and he needs to stop 🤢 But also, back in the first 3 books when we thought Clary and Jace were siblings I did not feel this way... sooo idk what that says about me 🤷‍♀️😅 lol.

Oh! The Alec/Magnus thing, I knew it was gonna bite Alec in the ass. I knew it! It made me so sad the Magnus broke up with Alec, but honestly, he kinda deserved it. I do hope they get back together though because I just love them! (hide spoiler)]

I'm excited to read the next book, just not immediately because my emotions need a break 😅 Lol.

So today I started even though I wasn't planning on actually starting it so soon, but honestly I just could not wait. Lol. I'm right in the middle of ch. 5 just after a part with Maia and Jordan and a THING just happened... oof!

(view spoiler)[Since I mentioned Maia and Jordan, let's start off with them. So Sebastain just stabbed the hell out of Jordan and he's dead?! WTF! He is such a dick! But we all knew that already lol. Will he actually live? Idk, I mean Luke did. And if he does die this early on in the book, damn are we in for a ride. It makes me nervous 😬 And Maia keeping some sort of secret from Jordan... I'm not too sure what it is. For whatever reason my mind wants to say, "she's pregnant!" but I have no clue. The synopsis of the book talks about a betrayal, and for a split second I contemplated whether that was Maia, but I quickly scrapped that idea. Anyway, I'm sure we'll find out what she was hiding pretty soon here.

And speaking of a betrayal, now I'm thinking that might refer to the Seelie Queen who is freaking SLEEPING with Sebastian?! 🤮 EWW! But also working with him, apparently. Honestly, I'm not that surprised at this though.

I know I said this in my update of the last book, but I am SO glad Jace is back! I missed him! And I just love him and Clary together, even though they can't, you know, be together 😏

And then we have the introduction to some new characters, which if I am not mistaken, are the main characters in the Dark Artifices series. At first I was like, "Really?" I thought it was gonna be a set up for the next series, and it might be, but it doesn't feel that way. It is definitely relevant to the main plot in this book and series. We haven't seen much of these new characters, but I'm already starting to like them (I really loved the interaction between Clary and Emma). And I think it will be nice to get some of their backstory now before we start the follow up series. (hide spoiler)]

I don't know why, but I keep stopping in the middle of chapters 🤷‍♀️ Lol. I'm in he middle of ch. 11 and I only read the first part with the Council meeting. After the page break it looks like we're back to a Maia POV.

(view spoiler)[So, Jordan is dead. I'm actually really surprised. And it's sad because I loved the bromance he had going on with Jace and Simon. One of my favorite things about these last couple of books was those interactions. As for the Maia thing, that kind of surprised me... but not really? It surprised me in that I didn't really know what to expect her secret to be... I certainly did not expect her to want to break up with Jordan. But on the other hand, while I knew they had history, I definitely felt like they were moving pretty fast in their relationship. But now it seems like something might happen with Bat? Idk.

And Sebastian is still being super gross with Clary, which no thank you 🤢 This guy is so messed up. It's really interesting what Clary theorized about him and his misunderstanding of love and being lonely and all that. It's almost sad, but definitely does not make his actions okay. But Clary and Jace are being super cute and I am totally living for it!

Another thing I am living for is Brother Zachariah AKA Jem! 😭 He's actually back! That is so cool and I am so happy! And I love how he just keeps helping Jace out because of Will. Jem is so sweet and I've really missed him.

Oh! I'm also really curious about the situation with the London Institute and this ghost, apparently?? What's that all about? I'm pretty sure this was not a thing in TID, so I am extremely curious about this!

Today I was a little busy so I only read 4 chapters. Here are my thoughts through ch. 14 (I actually didn't stop mid-chapter this time lol):

(view spoiler)[I'm sorry but I can't get over how sweet Jem was being with Jace! 😍 I'm just so happy that he's human again and he still loves Tessa! 😭 Also, I was wondering where Tessa was in all this... apparently she's been studying in the warlock's library or whatever, so that's cool.

So... they're in the demon realm. That's insane! I still can't believe they're there! I really loved the interaction they had beforehand, after Emma had left and Jace was wanting to go in alone but everyone else was like, "Hell no!" Lol. I thought this whole conversation was really sweet and I also love that they included Simon in all of it. I am so surprised at myself at how much I am liking Simon now 😅 I actually really disliked him in the first two books sooooo... progress! Lol.

But back to the demon realm, those dreams they had upon arriving... they were weird AF! The one Clary had with a normal Sebastian and a little sister... wow. It was WEIRD but also kinda cute in a sad way. And then the one that Isabelle had with her birthday party and Max was there... that broke my heart. Poor Max 😩 I'm really curious about what Jace saw. I know he said he didn't see anything, but he totally did, and I wonder what it was. It must've been real bad... or good, I guess?

And that Seelie Queen, ugh! Alec killing Meliorn was really cool though. Go Alec! Lol. (hide spoiler)]

I am really excited to continue reading because, even though we're at the halfway mark, I feel like we're at the rising action and things are about to go down!

I just finished CoHF and I... I'm just a mess 😩 I loved it, but I am not okay. Here are some quick thoughts because if I linger too long I will definitely start crying again 😅

(view spoiler)[Speaking of crying, after Clary stabbed Sebastian and he turned into Jonathan... I cried. I legitimately cried over him. Who would've thought that I'd be crying over Sebastian? But this boy that was laying in Jocelyn's arms, that was Clary's real brother. That was the real Jonathan and it made me so sad to see what Clary and Jocelyn would've had had Valentine not tampered with the poor kid.

I also cried when Magnus was trying to sacrifice himself to get his friends out of the demon realm. That was awful! But then when Simon offered himself up and I was like, "okay, this is gonna work out better. He wont die." BUT THEN they took his memories of the Shadow World! You bet I started crying again... and over Simon, no less! The first two books of this series, I was NOT a fan of Simon. I kind of hated him. But here we are 4 books later and I'm crying over him as well. I really love Simon now and it just sucks that the demon did this to him 😩 But he's somehow getting snippets of his memory back?? I mean I don't know how that works cause I thought the memories were gone for good, but hey I'm not complaining! Lol.

So, Brittany, remember that book I was talking about a while back that is in Simon's POV that is super spoiler-y? It's ! I'm so sad that this wont be the same Simon, but I'm excited to read this book and have more Simon in my life! I'm gonna be honest, when I first bought this book and took a peek at the synopsis, I still had only read the 1st 3 books in the series so I was kinda meh about it. But Now I'm really excited to read it! Lol.

Oh! It also sucks what happened the Blackthorn kids, especially Helen! Totally not fair! I think Magnus was right about the Fae starting another war... that's probably what The Dark Artifices will be centered around. I'm excited to read that series as well! I hear Tessa and Jem will make an appearance or two! I love Jem! I was so happy to see him fully him again! (hide spoiler)]

Idk what else to say... I can really feel that book hangover looming over me. But I really loved the series! I'm very interested see what your thoughts will be on these last 2 books!

From what I remember about book 5, there was a section in the book that felt quite slow, like things weren't getting done and they were just hanging out. But things do pick up.

I keep meaning to get back to reading this series I have book 5 to read also. 4 is supposed to be the weakest though May so Im hopeful!

Seeing these comments make me want to reread the whole series haha. I think book 5 is definitely better than 4 and when I read them for the first time, book 6 was my favourite if I remember correctly.

For me I did feel a lack of attachment in book 5, but for a completely different reason: the fact that Jace wasn't Jace. But I can see where you're coming from! I just never noticed. Lol.

And yes, Magnus is the best! He is probably my favorite character in the entire Shadowhunter Chronicles! (hide spoiler)]

If you guys love Magnus as much as I do, I highly recommend (but definitely read after at least book 5 just to be safe from spoilers). There are a couple stories in there that are Malec centric, which were probably my favorite in the entire book! But the best one was definitely The Course of True Love and First Dates . It was SO cute!! They go on their first date and... it was just a lot of fun! Definitely read it! And it can be read at any time after book 2 probably. And of course there's The Eldest Curses series, which I have not read yet, but I'm sure it's great if it revolves around Alec and Magnus. Lol.

I loved that book! I still have to complete the Lady Midnight series, but after that I'm definitely getting The Eldest Curses series.
