The most compelling story for me was Snow Blind. We met Annie Appleby earlier in Dottie's Bed and Breakfast, and she an unpleasant shrew in the mind of Mrs. Small. Then we meet her again, and she is talented, spiritual, and intelligent.

Second, we learn that her unfeeling, pragmatic father has a boyfriend he truly loves. The saying is that most people live lives of quiet desperation, and it seems Elgin Appleby, his wife, his son, his daughter, and everyone around him, fit that description, but it is not true in Elgin's case.
