Why would Charles have revealed his mother’s secret to Hannah? Was it plausible for him to believe she’d have a reaction different from the one she had?

I was surprised about this. I think it was a little bit of a weak spot in the story really.

It sounded like the two of them never really got along. I'm surprised he would confide something so huge to Hannah. It's didn't seem right to me. I would have believed it if Hannah had overheard a conversation about it, but this didn't make a lot of sense.

This felt like a plot hole to me, too. Hannah is flighty and superficial, completely consumed by social standing so this kind of news would not be well received. We never got to know Charles but I have to believe he saw his wife clearly. Him telling her made no sense.

I agree. I know you can be completely blinded by love, but this seems really not very realistic.

It didn't make sense to me either. I can only assume that he did it when he was drunk.
