Challenge Corner discussion

Children can have a cruel, absolute sense of justice. Children can kill a monster and feel quite proud of themselves. A girl can look at her brother and believe they’re destined to be a knight and a bard who battle evil. She can believe she’s found the thing she’s been made for.

Hazel lives with her brother, Ben, in the strange town of Fairfold where humans and fae exist side by side. The faeries’ seemingly harmless magic attracts tourists, but Hazel knows how dangerous they can be, and she knows how to stop them. Or she did, once.

At the center of it all, there is a glass coffin in the woods. It rests right on the ground and in it sleeps a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointed as knives. Hazel and Ben were both in love with him as children. The boy has slept there for generations, never waking.

Until one day, he does…

As the world turns upside down, Hazel tries to remember her years pretending to be a knight. But swept up in new love, shifting loyalties, and the fresh sting of betrayal, will it be enough?

Ch 7 - (view spoiler)[ Well of course the scholarship didn't turn out the way she wanted, it was a faerie deal - they live to twist things. But it is sad that Ben smashed his hand. I'm trying to think of an instrument (besides voice) that doesn't require hands. I got nothin. Of course, there are some that don't require fine motor - maybe he can take up the drums. Ch 12 - (view spoiler)[ uh oh, I think Hazel going to the revel is a bad idea. Although, maybe it will be the perfect time for Jack and her to admit their feelings toward one another. (hide spoiler)]
Ch 17 - (view spoiler)[ Wow, I can't believe that this town is turning on Jack when there are so many other things going on. Sure a pitchfork hunt for the horned boy I could see, but turning on someone that has lived his whole life in their messed up town just isn't right. (hide spoiler)]
Finished - (view spoiler)[ Ok, not my favorite of Holly Black's but it was pretty good. I liked the way Severin ended up with Ben and Ben is going to pursue his music again under his care. And it sounds like Hazel gets to be a knight for Severin too. The only character that we really didn't get an explanation for their happier ending was Severin's sister. I guess getting revenge on her father was enough to break her sorrow? (hide spoiler)]

100%: (view spoiler)[Okay it was a pretty good audio book overall. I liked the characters and the story but I also have a few unanswered questions. Like with the older sister - where was her happy ending? Is Hazel going to end up with Jack in the end with their little happy ending or what? Is Ben forever staying with his boyfriend? Ch 18 (view spoiler)[I'm glad Ben's singing helped stop Sorrel. I like the 2 couples, I hope everyone can end up happy. I wonder if night Hazel has something to do with everything. (hide spoiler)]
Finished (view spoiler)[ does being named Champion mean that Hazel is immortal? That would be cool. I'm glad things worked out and it's cool that Hazel was the one with a plan and telling herself things. (hide spoiler)]

I am really curious about meeting the guy in the glass coffin. I want to know what he is like and where him waking up is going to take the story. Also, is he going to be a love interest or is Hazel still going to pine over Jack? Also, was Hazel the one who woke the sleeping boy up and if so, how?! (hide spoiler)]

I find Jack to be an interesting character. I want to know if being raised by humans has given him both human personality traits, but he still retains his other self. Does he feel more human or more changeling? Also, I am not entirely sure what a changeling is. I understand that a faerie leaves one behind that looks like the human baby he/she stole (also, why would they want a human baby?), but is a changeling a kind of faerie or something else? I'll admit that I am not really into the Faerie part of the story all that much, but I love the relationship that is forming between Jack and Hazel. I think it is really cute. I also hope that Severin is able to save his sister, and maybe get together with Ben. (hide spoiler)]

I didn't think that I would like this book, but I ended up enjoying it. I liked the ending and the twist of Night vs. Day Hazel. I also loved the romance between Hazel and Jack. Also, I think it is sweet how Jack genuinely loves his human family. Overall, 3.5/5 (rounded down to 3). (hide spoiler)]
