Such a lovely touching story about friendship ‘…friendship is one of the most satisfying things in the world’. (page 112). Wilbur, the pig is born a runt and Fern persuades her father to let her look after and bottle-feed the pig. However, once Wilbur becomes big and strong her father sells him to Mr Zuckerman. It is in Mr Zuckerman’s barn, Wilbur meets Charlotte the spider. Charlotte hatches a plan to save Wilbur from becoming bacon. However, there is a twist, which brought a tear to my eye.
The book is beautifully illustrated by Garth Williams.
Overall, I loved this story. The book is also quite a good book for children to learn the meaning of different words, for example “versatile” and “idiosyncrasy”.
I would say the book is aimed at children aged 7+ at KS2 for independent reading as they are nice short chapters.
