Nileema | 150 comments I chose this book for ‘retellings’ because I loved watching the Disney movie version of Pocahontas and was curious to read the story as told in a way more true to real events.
Unfortunately, I was unable to finish the book as it dragged on and on, with far too much repetitive detail. Whilst I appreciated the way that the traditional story of colonialists holding all the power and the indigenous people being wholly vulnerable was turned on its head, to give a more realistic and much needed perspective, the characters were impenetrable and the plot moved agonisingly slowly. I tried to force my way through to the ending, having got around 40% of the way through, but I just can’t - for me, reading is supposed to be enjoyable, and this was not.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12569 comments I say, good decision! My new rule is if I am not enjoying by chapter 3 or 4-it goes to the DNF pile
