🎼 Madonna Louise Ciccone was born in Bay City, Michigan, on August 16, 1958. Her father's parents were Italian emigrants from Pacentro, while her mother was of French-Canadian descent. Since Madonna had the same name as her mother; family members called her "Little Nonni". Madonna later commented about her name, "How could I be anything else but what I am having been named Madonna? I would either have ended up a nun or this.” She has two older brothers, Anthony and Martin, and three younger siblings, Paula, Christopher, and Melanie. She was raised in the Detroit suburbs of Pontiac and Avon Township (now Rochester Hills). Her mother died of breast cancer at age 30 on December 1, 1963, which had a significant impact on Madonna’s formative years.
🎼1. Read a book that takes place in Michigan OR a book with a character that is Italian, French or Canadian.
🎼2. Read a book with siblings OR read a book that the title or author’s first or last name has a M, L, & C in it.
🎼 In 1966, Madonna’s dad, Tony, married the family's housekeeper Joan Gustafson. They had two children, Jennifer and Mario. Madonna resented her father for getting remarried, and began rebelling against him, which strained their relationship for many years afterward. Madonna maintained a high grade point average, but still achieved notoriety for her unconventional behavior. Madonna's father put her in classical piano lessons, but she later convinced him to allow her to take ballet lessons. In high school she became a straight-A student and a member of the cheerleading squad. After graduating, she received a dance scholarship to the University of Michigan. At the age of 19, Madonna began studying dance, but, in 1978, dropped out of college and relocated to New York City. Madonna said of her move to New York, "It was the first time I'd ever taken a plane, the first time I'd ever gotten a taxi cab. I came here with $35 in my pocket. It was the bravest thing I'd ever done."
🎼3. Read a book that has a high school or college character OR read a book that has a character that is a dancer.
🎼4. Read a book that has a rebellious character OR read a book that involves a character getting remarried.
🎼 While performing as a backup singer and dancer for the French disco artist Patrick Hernandez on his 1979 world tour, Madonna became involved with several different musicians and bands, but eventually she later decided to promote herself as a solo act. Madonna had a few small singles released before 1982, but it wasn’t until her album Madonna, that she really took off. With the help of a boyfriend, Madonna remixed one of her songs, which would later become “Holiday,” her first international top-ten hit. The overall sound of Madonna was in the form of upbeat synthetic disco, using some of the new technology of the time, like the Linn drum machine and the OB-X synthesizer. "Borderline" and "Lucky Star" were two top-ten singles. In June 1986, Madonna released her third studio album, True Blue. Rolling Stone was impressed with the effort, writing that the album "sound[s] as if it comes from the heart". Five singles were released—"Live to Tell", "Papa Don't Preach", "True Blue", "Open Your Heart", and "La Isla Bonita"—all of which reached number one in the US or the UK. The album topped the charts in 28 countries worldwide, an unprecedented achievement at the time, and remains Madonna's best-selling studio album, with sales of 25 million copies. True Blue was featured in the 1992 edition of Guinness World Records as the best-selling album by a woman of all time.

🎼 Madonna's look and style of dressing, her performances, and her music videos influenced young girls and women. Her style became one of the female fashion trends of the 1980s. Madonna's popularity continued to rise globally with the release of her second studio album, Like a Virgin, in November 1984. Like a Virgin became the very first album by a female to sell over five million copies in the U.S. The album's title track served as its first single, and topped the Hot 100 chart for six consecutive weeks. It attracted the attention of conservative organizations who complained that the song and its accompanying video promoted premarital sex and undermined family values, and moralists sought to have the song and video banned. Madonna received huge media coverage for her performance of "Like a Virgin" at the first 1984 MTV Video Music Awards. Wearing a wedding dress and white gloves, Madonna appeared on stage atop a giant wedding cake and then rolled around suggestively on the floor. MTV retrospectively considered it one of the "most iconic" pop performances of all time.

It reached number one on the box-office and became the tenth highest-grossing film of the year in the U.S. She recorded the film's theme song, "This Used to Be My Playground", which became her tenth Hot 100 number-one hit, the most by any female artist at the time. The same year, she founded her own entertainment company, Maverick, consisting of a record company, a film production company, and associated music publishing, television broadcasting, book publishing and merchandising divisions. The deal was a joint venture with Time Warner and paid Madonna an advance of $60 million. It gave her 20% royalties from the music proceedings, the highest rate in the industry at the time, equaled only by Michael Jackson's royalty rate established a year earlier with Sony.

🎼 In the 1996 musical, Evita, Madonna played the title role of Eva Perón. For a long time, Madonna had desired to play Perón and wrote to director Alan Parker to explain why she would be perfect for the part. She said later, "This is the role I was born to play. I put everything of me into this because it was much more than a role in a movie. It was exhilarating and intimidating at the same time. And I am prouder of Evita than anything else I have done." After securing the role, she had vocal training and learned about the history of Argentina and Perón. After Evita's release in December 1996, Madonna's performance was praised by film critics. Zach Conner from Time magazine commented, "It's a relief to say that Evita is pretty damn fine, well cast and handsomely visualized. Madonna once again confounds our expectations." Madonna won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for the role.

The Guinness World Records acknowledged her as the best-selling female recording artist of all time. Madonna remains the highest-grossing solo touring artist of all time, and Madonna has also won seven Grammy Awards and twenty MTV Video Music Awards.
According to Billboard, Madonna is the most successful solo artist in the Hot 100 chart history (second overall behind the Beatles). She has also scored 38 top-ten singles on the Hot 100, more than any other artist in history. Madonna has acted in numerous movies, as well as directed two movies. Nashville, Tennessee in the United States has a varied musical background.
Choose your level:
Honky Tonk: 1-5 tasks
Grand Ole Opry: 6-10 tasks
Ryman Auditorium: 11-15 tasks
🏙 Nashville’s earliest settlers celebrated in the late 1700s with fiddle tunes and buck dancing after safely disembarking on the shores of the Cumberland River. Nashville’s first “celebrity,” noted frontiersman and Congressman Davy Crockett was known for his colorful stories and fiddle playing. In the 1800s, Nashville grew to become a national center for music publishing. The first around-the-world tour by a musical act was by the Fisk Jubilee Singers from Nashville’s Fisk University. Their efforts helped fund the school’s mission of educating freed slaves after the Civil War – and also put Nashville on the map as a global music center.
🏙1. Read a book that takes place in or at a college campus OR read a book that takes place near a river or has a river on the cover.
🏙2. Read a book about a frontier (you decide and tell us) OR read a book that starts with a letter in MUSIC CITY.
🏙 The Ryman Auditorium, built in 1892, is one of Nashville’s most famous music venues. The Ryman has received
Pollstar magazine’s prestigious “Theater of the Year” award seven times in the past ten years as the best auditorium in the nation to experience live music. Today the Ryman celebrates 125 years as one of the most famous concert venues in America where stars who normally play arenas and even stadiums perform in the 2,362-seat venue. The long list of famous Ryman performers includes Bruce Springsteen, Garth Brooks, Paul Simon, The Foo Fighters, Aretha Franklin, Jack White, James Brown, Neil Diamond, and Diana Ross. The Ryman is also open for daily tours where visitors can stand on its famous stage, watch a film of the history of the building, view clothes of Opry performers, and see Ryman memorabilia.
🏙3. Read a book that has the numbers 2,2,3,&/or 6 in the page count OR read a book that has a fictional or real celebrity in it.
🏙4. Read a book that involves a theater OR read a book that involves music.
🏙 The Grand Ole Opry was started in 1925 and was hosted at the Ryman from 1943-1973. Country Music Hall of Fame stars Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, George Jones, Dolly Parton, Charley Pride, and Elvis all performed at the Opry on the Ryman stage for the first time. In 1925, the establishment of radio station WSM and its launch of the broadcast that would be called the Grand Ole Opry further secured Nashville’s reputation as a musical center and sparked its durable nickname of Music City. The Opry, still staged live every week, is America’s longest-running radio show, in continuous production for more than 90 years.
🏙5. Read a book that takes place sometime between 1925-1943 OR a book that mentions a radio or a character listens to the radio.
🏙6. Read a book that has won an award OR read a book where a character has a nickname or the book is known by another name. Some examples: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2...
🏙7. Read a book where the letters G & O are in the title or author’s name OR read a debut book.
🏙 Nashville is also known as the “Songwriting Capital of the World.” The famous Bluebird Cafe showcases songwriters performing their original music in an intimate “in the round” setting that was created in Nashville. The annual Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival puts these songwriters somewhere they’re not used to being, in the spotlight. Over the course of five days, more than 300 songwriters perform at venues around town.
🏙8. Read a book with a blue cover OR read a book with a bird on the cover.
🏙9. Read a book that has a festival in it OR read a book that has a character that is a writer.
🏙 In 1958, the Country Music Association was founded to spread the word about country music. In addition to combating the 1950s rock ’n’ roll onslaught, the organization created the CMA Awards, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and the city’s signature event, the CMA Music Festival. Some of the most famous names that came out of Nashville are the Allman Brothers, Hank Williams, and Liz Kilgo. Many country singers reference Nashville as being their home, due to the huge influence the city has in the world of country music.
🏙10. Read a book that has 1, 5, 8, &/or 9 in the page count OR a book that has a rural setting.
🏙11. Read a book that takes place in Nashville OR read a book with a number in the title. Some examples: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2...
🏙 Live music can be seen and heard every day and night of the week in Nashville. The world-famous honky tonks, located on Broadway, offer free live music 365 days a year. There are more than 180 music venues around town ranging from large arenas and concert halls to small clubs and featuring nearly every genre of music. However, Nashville is more than just country music. In December 1945 when Bill Monroe played his mandolin at the Ryman with Lester Flatt playing guitar, Chubby Wise on fiddle and Howard Watts on bass a new musical genre of bluegrass music was created on the famous stage. Nashville has also become a hub for pop, rock, bluegrass, Americana, jazz, classical, contemporary Christian, blues, and soul music. 🏙14. Read a book that has a catastrophe or natural disaster in it OR read a book where someone dies.
🏙15. Read a book that has a character or author named Miranda, Dolly, or Carrie OR read a book where a character goes to or performs in a concert.

Don’t Speak: 2-5 tasks

🎸 In 1986, American rock band, No Doubt was formed in Anaheim, California. Originally, the band was formed by Eric Stefani and John Spence, with Gwen Stefani as backup vocals. Other members of the band were Jerry McMahon, Chris Leal, and Chris Webb. Its current members consist of vocalist Gwen Stefani, guitarist Tom Dumont, bassist Tony Kanal, and drummer Adrian Young. No Doubt's musical style has been characterized as ska punk, reggae fusion,[1] punk rock, pop punk, new wave, alternative rock and pop rock.

2. Read a book with siblings OR read a book that was published or takes place in the 1980s.
🎸 No Doubt signed a multi-album deal with Interscope Records in 1990 and in 1992 released a self-titled debut album. Following that, Eric Stefani started to feel withdrawn from the group and eventually by 1994 he decided to leave the band to pursue a career in animation. He was an animator for the TV series, The Simpson, even drawing a scene involving No Doubt. Around this time, Gwen Stefani & bassist Tony Kanal’s seven-year relationship ended. The Beacon Street Collection was released and sold more than its predecessors, but it was their third album, Tragic Kingdom, much of which dealt with the relationship between Tony Kanal and Gwen Stefani, that was the catapult to commercial success.
3. Read a book where a character feels withdrawn (you decide) OR read a third in a series OR read a book with a break-up.
4. Read a book that involves a breakup OR read a book with pictures/illustrations or involves art.
🎸 Tragic Kingdom and the single "Just a Girl" was released in 1995 and the band began touring that same year. Singles "Spiderwebs" and "Don't Speak" were released thereafter. Widely credited with bringing ska back to the forefront of the music scene in the 1990s, the album eventually sold more than twenty million copies worldwide. At the 1997 Grammy Awards, No Doubt was nominated for two Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Rock Album. Later, they were nominated for two more Grammys for Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, both for "Don't Speak.” Due to the success of Tragic Kingdom, the band's debut album began again to sell copies, and reached total sales of over a quarter of a million copies.
5. Read a book with Girl in the title OR a book with two of the following numbers in the page count: 1,7,9,9.
6. Read a book that has won an award OR read a debut book: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/6...
7. Read a book that has a number on the cover or in the title OR read a book that has the letters SKA in the title, in any order.
🎸 After touring ended in 1997, the band collaborated and contributed to a variety of musical projects, such as "I Throw My Toys Around" with Elvis Costello for The Rugrats Movie. Stefani also contributed vocals to track for a variety of musicians and bands, including boyfriend Gavin Rossdale’s band, Bush. Fourth album, Return to Saturn, received critical acclaim, but commercial success was lackluster. Mediocre sales contributed to a shorted tour date. Fifteen months later, the band reappeared with the album Rock Steady, which incorporated reggae and dancehall music into their work. The 2001 album was primarily recorded in Jamaica and featured collaborations with Jamaican artists Bounty Killer, Sly and Robbie, and Lady Saw. Singles "Hey Baby" and "Underneath It All", both from the Rock Stead album, won Grammys.

9. Read a book that involved the Caribbean OR read a book that involves space. Tell us how.
🎸In addition, Prince made an appearance on Rock Steady as cowriter, producer, and vocalist on the song "Waiting Room." Rock Steady also proved to be more commercially success than Return of Saturn. The album eventually was certified double platinum. Around this same time, Stefani and Rossdale made headlines when they decided to tie the knot in 2002. The couple now have two children—Kingston James McGregor Rossdale and Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale. The following year in 2003, No Doubt released a greatest hits album called The Singles 1992-2003.

11. Read a that has a 0,1,2, 3, or 9 in the ratings. Tell us what the number is. OR read a book that is a re-release or considered a classic.
🎸After a 2004 tour the band embarked on solo projects, with Stefani releasing two successful solo albums Love. Angel. Music. Baby. (2004) and The Sweet Escape (2006). Meanwhile Tom Dumont released his own solo music project, Invincible Overlord. Adrian Young, the band's drummer, played on other albums and in 2008, Tony Kanal collaborated with pop rock artist Pink on the album Funhouse. In 2008, the band resumed working slowly on their sixth effort, titled Push and Shove (2012), and released their single "Settle Down". Stefani launched her first solo arena tour in October 2005, which coincided with the news of her pregnancy of her first child, Kingston. 🎸In 2010, No Doubt also released another compilation album called Icon, but they have not released anything since 2012. In a June 2016 interview with Rolling Stone, Stefani expressed uncertainty over the future of No Doubt. "I don't know what's going to happen with No Doubt. When Tony [Kanal] and I are connected creatively, it's magic. But I think we've grown apart as far as what kind of music we want to make. I was really drained and burned out when we recorded that album [2012's Push and Shove]. And I had a lot of guilt: 'I have to do it.' That's not the right setting to make music. There's some really great writing on that record. But the production felt really conflicted. It was sad how we all waited that long to put something out and it didn't get heard." Still, over the course of almost 2 decades, No Doubt won numerous awards and made several indelible contributions to the world of music.
14. Read a book where characters are drifting apart (tell us how OR read a book that was written in the past two decades.
15. Read a book considered a compilation or collection OR read a book where the title begins with a letter in ICON.

🎤 Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1944, Diana Ross was the second-oldest child. A clerical error occurred at her birth in 1944 when her name was recorded as Diana; her mother had actually named her “Diane”. Early Supremes records list Ross as Diane and her family still calls her Diane as well, but the rest of the world knows her as Diana. Ross’ elder sister is American physician Barbara Ross-Lee. The family moved to Alabama when Ross’s mother battled tuberculosis but returned to Detroit after.
1. Read a book with siblings OR read a book with an author or character having a nickname, misspelled name, name error, name irregularity, etc. Open to other interpretations. 😊

3. Read a book that takes place or was published in the 1940s. OR read a book where a character is sick.
🎤 Ross took a variety of classes at her magnet high school, such as clothing design, pattern making, tailoring, etc. as she aspired to be a fashion designer. Additionally, she took cosmetology and modeling, eventually performing hairdressing services for her neighbors. At the age of 15, Ross joined the Primettes, a female group of four. The Primettes were invited to audition for Motown Records in 1960, and later, after success at sock hops, Ross approached William “Smokey” Robinson, Ross’s former neighbor, for another audition. Due do their youth, they were advised to return after high school. Undeterred, they regularly provided extra support for Motown’s recordings, such as hand claps or background vocals, by regularly visiting Hitsville, USA, which was Motown’s headquarters. In the group’s early years, hairstyling, make-up, seamstress, and costume design duties were all done by Ross.

🎤Berry Gordy, one of Motown’s founders and executives, agreed to sign the Primettes if they changed their name. Group member Florence Ballard picked “Supremes” from a list because it was the only name on the list that didn’t end with “ette.” The other members were not thrilled, but signed with their new name in January, 1961. By 1963, the group was a trio and had their first number-one hit with "Where Did Our Love Go." Between August 1964 and May 1967, the women had sang on ten number-one hit singles.
By 1967 the group was renamed Diana Ross & the Supremes so Gordy could charge larger performance fees for a solo star and backing group.

In 1968, Ross began to perform as a solo artist, with her final performance with the Supremes in Las Vegas on January 4th, 1970. In May of 1970, Ross released her self-titled solo debut, which included “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand)” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” the latter becoming her first number one hit as a solo act.

11. Read a re-telling OR read a book that is also a movie OR read a book about Billie Holliday.
12. Read a book with a blue cover OR read a book by two authors: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

🎸 Grammy-award-winning rock duo the Black Keys has steadily won increasing popular and critical recognition for their classic bluesy sounds and dynamic rhythms in the years following their 200¬2 debut, The Big Come Up. Growing up in the same neighborhood in Akron, Ohio, guitarist and vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney did not officially form until 2001 after Auerbach was looking for assistance in making a demo. Even though they knew each other at an early age, they weren’t part of the same crowds, nor did they really become friends until high school when they were encouraged by their brothers to collaborate.
1. Read a book where a character plays an instrument OR read a book that takes place in a high school.
2. Read a book that takes place in Ohio OR read a book where the title begins with D A C or P, ignoring a, an, and the.
3. Read a book that has a blue cover OR read a book that was published or takes place in 2001.
🎸 Before too long, the duo had started to grow a regional fan base and after recording a demo in Carney’s basement, they signed with independent label Alive to release their debut. Over the course of the next couple years, the duo signed with different labels, eventually attracting national attention. The Black Keys were brought to new audiences after opening for musicians such as Beck and Sleater Kinney. Their third album, Rubber Factory, a reference to the former Akron tire plant where they recorded the album, marked a turn towards alternative music and a focus on songwriting.
4. Read a book that is a debut OR read a book that has a tire on the cover or in the story. Give us the sentence & location #.
5. Read the third book in a series OR read a book with a character that is a writer.
🎸 In an interview, Carney said that by the time the fifth album came around, he and Auerbach felt that they were ready to work with a producer because they couldn’t teach themselves anything more. So entered Brian Burton, also known as Danger Mouse. Several songs from the 2007 album, Attack & Release, which was also their first record to chart on the US Billboard 200, were picked up for commercials and television programs, further helping to make the band's music familiar to many new listeners. The band had some tension due to Carney’s now ex-wife, but the duo reconciled in 2009.
6. Read a book with a divorce OR read a book that has a 5 in the page count. Tell us the page count.
7. Read a book the letters D & M in the title or author’s name OR read a book where someone is attacked.
🎸 After a move to Nashville in 2010, The Black Keys released their next album, Brothers, which was their most successful to date, earning the number two spot on Rolling Stone’s best albums of 2010. Brothers showed a return to their roots with grittier blues and rock tracks, especially the songs "Tighten Up," “Howlin’ for You,” and "Next Girl." At the Grammys, they won three of the five awards they were nominated for, including Best Recording Packaging for the cover. They continued to gain exposure through song licensing and were Warner Bros Records’ most licensed band of the year. The video for “Howlin’ for You” was nominated for the 2011 MTV Video Music Award for Best Rock Video, and in 2014, the band donated the song rights to PETA for an animal adoption ad campaign.[76]

10. Read a book with an animal, animal character, or an animal on the cover OR read a book with only font of the cover as inspired by the Brothers cover.
🎸 Overwhelmed with the success and additional commitments and touring stops, in early 2011 the group cancelled concerts in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. The desire to record another album soon after Brothers also led to the decision. Carney said, "We could have waited another year or so, and milked the Brothers album and kept touring, but we like bands, and our favorite bands growing up and even today are bands that put out a lot of music and every album is different from the last.” In December of 2011, The Black Keys released El Camino their seventh album. The record draws from popular genres from the 1950s–1970s, including rock and roll, glam rock, rockabilly, surf rock, and soul. The band cited several retro acts as musical influences on the album, including the Clash, the Cramps, T. Rex, Ramones, the Beatles, and the Cars. The single, “Lonely Boy” made it to the number 2 spot on the Billboard 200, their highest chart position to date.
11. Read a book with a car on the cover OR read a book that takes place in Australia, New Zealand, or Europe. Tell us where.
12. Read a book where a character gets “overwhelmed.” You decide. OR read a book that could fall under multiple genres (historical mystery for example). Tell us the genres.
13. Read a book written by a duo OR read a book with two of the letters from EL CAMINO in the title.
🎸 El Camino put The Black Keys back at the 2013 Grammys with a nomination for Album of the Year and a win for the Best Rock Album. They also made several appearances on late-night television programs, including Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman. After a five year hiatus, in 2019, they released a new album titled Let’s Rock and a North American tour with Modest Mouse. The band is still creating and in April 2021, the band announced via the Lonely Boys and Girls fan club that there were releasing 11 covers of hill country blues songs on an album titled Delta Kream.
14. Read a book that has won an award OR read a book where a character is on TV.
15. Read a book published in 2021 OR read a book that has a lonely character (you decide).

🎼 The Grateful Dead: 6-10 tasks
🎼The Fillmore Auditorium: 11-15 tasks
🌉 Although San Francisco was incorporated in 1850, it is mostly known for it’s music scene from the 1950’s jazz movement through the musical revolution of the 1960s and beyond.
1. Read a book that takes place in San Francisco OR Read a book that takes place or was published in the 1950s or 1960s.
2. Read a book with a title where all the letters are in SAN FRANCISCO (three word minimum) OR Read a book that is tagged music.
🌉 Built in 1912, the Fillmore Auditorium changed names and hands several times. At one point, the Fillmore was a dance hall and a roller rink. But in 1954, Charles Sullivan, a successful African American businessman christened the Fillmore with its current name and started booking bands. It really wasn’t until 1965 until San Francisco’s rock scene really took off, though, with The Grateful Dead playing at the Fillmore. The same year, a new band called Jefferson Airplane, with Grace Slick at their helm, played at SF’s first folk night club, The Matrix.
3. Read a book with an African American character OR Read a debut book.
4. Read a book with a character names Charles, Sullivan, Grace, or Jefferson OR Read a book with a death or dead person (ghosts count).
5. Read a book where a character roller skates OR Read a book where a character dances OR Read a book with a businessman/woman.
🌉 . Besides the Fillmore Auditorium, there are a number of legendary musical venues in the San Francisco area. The Great American Music Hall, opened in 1907 after the 1906 earthquake, was originally a casino and brothel before evolving into an elegant venue to host acts like Duke Ellington and Sarah Vaughn. The Warfield was a center for film and vaudeville before it began hosting the likes of Louis Armstrong, Bob Dylan, and Prince.
6. Read a book where a character gambles OR Read a book that has royalty in the story.
7. Read a book that is also a film OR Read a book that is tagged historical OR Read a book with a building on the cover.
🌉Over this period of the 1960s, San Francisco became a hub for America’s counterculture, especially the neighborhoods of North Beach and Haight-Ashbury. In addition to the growing music scene, the Beat Generation of writers were also developing in the Bay area, with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg making it their home. Poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti founded City Light Bookstore in the North Beach neighborhood as well. Musical landmarks of those neighborhoods include Janis Joplin’s house at 635 Ashbury Street, in close proximit to the Grateful Dead house at 710 Ashbury Street. Jimi Hendrix’s former house was 1524A Haight Street.
8. Read a book that has the word neighborhood in the text. Tell us the sentence and location. OR Read a book with a writer OR Read a book that starts with an A (not counting a or an).
9. Read a book with a page count or publication that has two of the following numbers: 0,1,1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 OR Read a book that has a book on the cover or takes place in a bookstore.
🌉 San Francisco would not be complete without a mention of the Summer of Love. There was a gathering of nearly 100,000 hippies in the Haight and Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco during the summer of 1967. It was like a rebellion against the established norms of the society and encompassed hippie music, flower children, hallucinogenic drugs, anti-war sentiments, and free-love. The Summer of Love thus gave birth to a new kind of music in the San Francisco music scene called acid rock. Artists like Janis Joplin, the members of Jefferson Airplane, and Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead came to the forefront and took the music world by storm.
10. Read a book with more than 100,000 ratings. Tell us how many. OR Read a book that takes place during summer.
11. Read a book that has the words Summer or Love in the title OR Read a book with a “hippie” in the story OR Read a book where a character rebels. Tell us how.
12. Read a book that has a flower on the cover OR Read a book that is considered “anti-war” OR Read a book that is tagged Romance.
🌉 A number of other bands can claim their roots to the San Francisco Bay area. Carlos Santana is also a San Francisco native and is considered a pioneer of Latin American rock. Although Janis Joplin is originally from Los Angeles, her band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, was formed in San Francisco. In the 60s and 70s, funk and soul band Sly and the Family Stone could trace their formation to the Bay area. The 1970s brought the emergence of punk music with the Dead Kennedys. 1980s bad Huey Lewis and the News lived in the area as well, and Metallica settled in SF. Finally, 1990s bands like Counting Cros, Third Eye Blind, and The Donnas all also hailed from the Bay area.
13. Read a book that takes place in California OR Read a book where a character is a musician.
14. Read a book that has water on the cover or takes place near water OR Read a book with a Latinx character.
15. Read a book with a bird on the cover OR read a book that has an airplane on the cover OR Read a book with an author’s initials of S & F.

🎤 Lady Ella: 2-5 tasks
🎤First Lady of Song: 6-10 tasks
🎤Queen of Jazz: 11-15 tasks
🎤 Ella Fitzgerald was born in Newport News, Virginia on April 25, 1918. Her parents separated their common-law marriage early in Ella’s life, and Ella and her mother moved to Yonkers, near New York City with Fitzgerald’s mother’s new partner, a Portuguese immigrant named Joseph da Silva. Ella’s half-sister, Frances da Silva, was born in 1923 and she and Ella remained close for the rest of their lives. When Ella was 15, her mother passed away from injuries from a car accident. Eventually Ella moved in with an aunt in Harlem, and she began to skip school and chose activities that would eventually cause her to come into contact with authorities. She rarely talked about that time in her life.
1. Read a book that takes place in Virginia or New York OR Read a book with an African American character.
2. Read a book with a title where all the starting letters are in ELLA FITZGERALD (three-word minimum) OR Read a book published or that takes place in April of any year.
3. Read a book with the letters E & F in the author’s name OR Read a book where a character separates or divorces OR Read a book with half-siblings or sisters.
4. Read a book where a parent dies OR Read a book where a character has a run of misfortune (you decide) OR Read a book with a teen character.
🎤 Originally, Ella strove to be a dancer, but after she won a talent competition in 1935 with her singing, she decided that would be her vocation. Fitzgerald continued to play a variety of engagements, including at the Harlem Opera House, but not many groups were interested in her. Drummer Chick Webb and his band thought Fitzgerald would be an asset but weren’t interested in auditioning her, so Fitzgerald took matters into her own hands and forced the band to listen by hiding in their dressing room. They agreed to have her show for one night, which turned into her becoming a featured singer. After Webb’s death in 1939, she took over the band and renamed it Ella Fitzgerald and Her Famous Orchestra, and led the band until it dissolved at the start of WWII.
5. Read a book that has a band OR Read a book where someone wins something. Tell us what it is.
6. Read a book where a character auditions or tries out for something OR Read a book where the character's name is in the title OR Read a book with a singer or dancer.
🎤 Fitzgerald’s career took off after WWII after she joined Norman Granz’s Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts and toured internationally with other well-known jazz instrumentalists. The highlight of Fitzgerald’s career was her series of “songbooks” recordings from 1956 to 1964, when she sang songs by some of the best composers in American music, like Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and George and Ira Gershwin. This brought Fitzgerald more to mainstream audiences. Critics and others that knew Fitzgerald, though, would comment on her capacity for self-doubt. She would still worry extensively about what others thought of her singing.
7. Read a book where a character has self-doubt (you decide) OR Read a book with a character that plays an instrument or instruments on the cover (show us the cover).
8. Read a book that takes place during WWII OR Read a book where a character’s career “takes off.” Tell us how.
9. Read a book where a character travels OR Read a book that is tagged music.
🎤 With the end of the swing era and the decline of the great touring big bands, a major change in jazz music occurred. The beginning of bebop led to new developments in Fitzgerald's vocal style as she started including scat singing as a major part of her performance. Scat singing is a vocal improvisation with wordless vocables or nonsense syllables as the singer improvises melodies and rhythms. She was universally admired by her colleagues for her outstanding musicality. Dubbed "The First Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz singer in the United States for more than half a century. In her lifetime, she won 13 Grammy awards and sold over 40 million albums.
Fitzgerald received recognition from many sources. She was named Best Female Singer in Down Beat magazine's Reader's Poll 21 times. In 1984, she was presented with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Person's Whitney Young Award, and she received the Medal of Freedom Award from President George Bush in 1992. She held honorary degrees from several universities, and in 1974 the University of Maryland named its Ella Fitzgerald School of Performing Arts in her honor.
Plagued by health problems, Fitzgerald made her last recording in 1991 and her last public performances in 1993.
10. Read a book where a character performs OR Read a book with the letters SCAT in the title (any order).
11. Read a book that has a 1, 3, or 9 in the rating or publication date. Tell us the number. OR Read a book with the word “lady” in the story. Give us the sentence and location.
12. Read a book where a character wins an award or medal OR Read a book that has a president OR Read a book that the timeline spans more than half a century. Some ideas: https://www.goodreads.com/blog/show/2...
🎤 In contrast to her active career as a performer, Fitzgerald led a quiet personal life. Her first marriage 1941 was annulled two years later. In 1948, she married jazz bassist Ray Brown, and in 1951, the couple adopted a baby boy, whom they named Raymond Brown, Jr. They were divorced in 1953, and Fitzgerald raised the child on her own. There is also speculation that she was married a third time to a young Norwegian, Thor Einar Larsen.
Health problems slowed Fitzgerald down in her later years--she underwent cataract surgery in 1971 and open-heart surgery in 1986-- but she continued to perform and record sporadically. In 1993, the vocalist celebrated her 75th birthday, and in tribute, her "songbooks”, as well as all her recordings with Chick Webb, were reissued. In the same year, Fitzgerald had both legs amputated below the knee due to complications from diabetes, although this information was not released to the public until the following year. Both professionally and personally, Ella was a survivor.
On June 15, 1996, Ella Fitzgerald died quietly at her Beverly Hills home. She will be fondly remembered as one of America's finest female vocalists.
13. Read a book with a shy or reserved character OR Read a book with an adoption OR Read a book that has won an award.
14. Read a book that takes place or was published in the 1930s through 1990s. Tell us the year. OR Read a book where a character has multiple marriages OR Read a book with a secret.
15. Read a book that has a character in their 70s OR Read a book that has been “re-issued” or published several times OR Read a book that takes place on a college campus or a character gets a degree OR Read a book with a “survivor”. You decide.

💿 He was one of the most influential artists in both Soul and R&B. Born in Dawson, Georgia on September 9, 1941, Otis Ray Redding, Jr. was the fourth of six children and the first boy. His father was a sharecropper who eventually worked on an Air Force Base and occasionally preached at local churches. His family moved several times in his first few years. 💿 Redding quit school at 15 to help support his family, as his father had contracted tuberculosis. He worked a variety of jobs such as a well digger, gasoline station attendance, and occasionally a musician or singer. On Sundays he earned $6 by performing gospel songs for a radio station. His passion was singing. One day in 1962, at the end of a recording session, Redding cut a song, “These Arms of Mine,” which went to sell 800,000 copies and caught the attention of record label executives. He was signed by Volt Records.

💿 In the mid-60s, Redding moved to Los Angeles, California with his sister, while his wife and children stayed in Georgia. Redding had a different format for recording songs. He would record quickly to capture the energy. “When I go into a studio to record a song, I only have a title and maybe a first verse… The rest I make up as we’re recording,” Redding is quoted in Rock 100. His style was considered rough-edged, but gentle and it helped him gather a following. Redding’s studio songs, including songs like “Mr. Pitful” and “Try a Little Tenderness” helped create a new sound that would be known as the Memphis Sound.
7. Read a book that takes place or was published in the 1960s OR Read a book where the character makes something up. Tell us what it is.
8. Read a book where a character has a nickname OR Read a book that has a 1, 6, 7 or 9 in the page count.
9. Read a book with a family that moves OR Read a book that takes place in Los Angeles or Memphis OR Read a book where a character moves.
💿 In 1963, Redding traveled to New York to perform at the Apollo Theater for a live album. Redding and his band were paid per week, but they also had to pay for sheet music for the house band, which often left them with financial difficulty. Redding also wrote “Respect,” which became a Number 1 hit in 1967 for Aretha Franklin. Redding covered “Satisfaction” by the Rolling Stones and “Day Tripper” by the Beatles, which helped him earn pop radio airplay with white audiences. However, Redding was known for his stage performances, such as at the Monterey Pop Festival of 1967. He was considered a masterful ballad singer and a great live showman. By 1967 he had already put out a number of albums and was in a significantly better financial situation.

11. Read a book where a character gets respect. Tell us how. OR Read a book that is a retelling.

💿 In early December 1967, Redding was once again in the recording studio. One new co-written song was "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay." Redding was inspired by Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles and tried to create a similar sound, even though it was against the label's wishes. His wife Zelma disliked its melody as well. However, Redding wanted to expand his musical style and thought it was his best song. He thought it would top the charts, which it did, becoming his only single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also the first posthumous number-one single in U.S. chart history.
On December 9, 1967, Redding and his band were traveling from Cleveland, Ohio to Madison, Wisconsin for performances. After a phone call with his wife, and even though the weather was poor with heavy rain and fog, he boarded the airplane and took off with seven other men. Shortly thereafter, the plane crashed into a lake, killing all but one band member. Redding has been called the “King of Soul” and has been considered by many to be a significant musical influence, especially for R&B and Soul music genres.

🎤Formed in 1981, the Beastie Boys were an American rap group from New York City. They started out as a young trio who wanted to "fight for their right to party," but the Beastie Boys grew into socially conscious rappers over nearly three decades of producing their own rap/punk blend. Michael "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "King Ad-Rock" Horovitz, and Adam “MCA” Yauch met as teenagers hanging out in New York clubs, and they all grew up in families that were no strangers to creativity. 🎤 Originally, the Beastie Boys experimented with hardcore punk. In 1986, the band released their debut on Def Jam Records, titled Licensed to Ill, which became one of the bestselling albums of the 1980s. The album included singles “Fight for Your Right (to Party)” and “No Sleep Till Brooklyn.” While touring and promoting, the members received bad reputations for partying and other “bad” behaviors. Eventually, they got into a dispute with their label and even each other, resulting in a break.

🎤In 1989, the band released their next album, Paul’s Boutique, which showed more maturity than their first album but also showed growth with the members of the group. The album was described as a work of experimental hip hop. At first, the album was not a commercial success but eventually received critical acclaim. They followed Paul’s Boutique with Check Your Head in 1992. This time, the members all played their own instruments, unlike on previous albums. Maintaining an easy-going recording pace, the Beastie Boys waited until 1994 to release their next album, Ill Communication, which included "Get It Together" and "Sabotage." They reclaimed their popularity and high sales when the album debuted at number one on Billboard's album charts.

🎤 The Beastie Boys took nearly four years off before they returned to the studio again. All three members moved back to New York from California, and each spent time pursuing his own interests, while still maintaining their friendships. In 1998 the trio released Hello Nasty and the single "Intergalactic." Within the first week of its release, the album soared to number one on Billboard's album chart and sold over 681,500 copies. Aside from the requisite touring that followed the release of Hello Nasty, the Beastie Boys remained relatively quiet over the next few years, focusing their attention away from the band and more on their label, Grand Royal, their magazine, Grand Royal Magazine, and their clothing company named X-Large. They would go on to release several more albums, including To the 5 Boroughs which is essentially a love letter to New York and hip hop.

🎤 In the early 1990s, Yauch began exploring Buddhism, and eventually cofounded the Milarepa Fund to raise awareness of China's oppression of the Tibetan people. The group often focused on political activism and human rights campaigns. Many musicians and critics have described the Beastie Boys as one of the most influential rap and hip hop groups of all time. Only weeks after the Beasties were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April of 2012, the group lost a founding member, Adam "MCA" Yauch, to cancer. Without Yauch, the Beastie Boys essentially reached their end. The Beastie Boys have sold 20 million records in the United States and had seven platinum-selling albums from 1986 to 2004. They are the biggest-selling rap group since Billboard began recording sales in 1991.

✨ On January 8, 1947, David Bowie was born David Robert Jones in the working class section of London known as Brixton. He described his childhood as difficult. His parents were married after his birth, which was scandalous for the time. Also, his brother was eventually confined to a psychiatric hospital. He loved music from an early age and his parents gave him records of American rock musicians such as Elvis Presley, Little Richard, and Fats Domino while also introducing him to jazz and R&B. He learned guitar as a child and saxophone at 12 but didn’t take a career in music seriously until the 1960s. He held various jobs including at an ad agency and with a mime troupe until his first serious group, Davie Jones and the King Bees in 1964, but they didn’t last very long. Bowie gave up the name Davy Jones for David Bowie after the The Monkees became popular. He was in a number of small bands but didn’t really get a break until 1967 when he got a solo recording deal.

He also met his future wife, Angela Barnett, at this time and she convinced a friend at Mercury Records to listen to his music. “Space Oddity” coincided with the enthusiasm for the American moon landing and helped launch Bowie’s US music career. Bowie released his first official solo album in 1969, titled Man of Words, Man of Music . The following year Bowie married Barnett and in 1971 they had a son named Duncan Zowie Hayward Jones. In 1970, Bowie also released The Man Who Sold the World which featured Bowie in a dress and make-up on the cover, which foreshadowed Bowie’s glam rock persona.

In 1972, Bowie released a sci-fi concept album about a band from outer space called The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars . Bowie himself was becoming a cult figure, noted for his cross-dressing, different colored eyes, and refreshing new sound. He also created a media sensation by telling an interviewer that he was bisexual. He released his most commercially successful album to date in 1983, titled Let's Dance. The album featured the hit singles "Let's Dance," "Modern Love," and "China Girl." Bowie continued to release original albums and tour into the 2000s. Health issues caused him to cut back on touring in the early 2000s. Bowie's much-anticipated album Blackstar was released on January 8, 2016, which coincided with the rocker's 69th birthday. Two days later, news of Bowie's death from cancer stunned his fans and made international headlines, as few people knew he was sick. Bowie was survived by the supermodel Iman, his wife of more than 20 years, and his children, Duncan Jones and Alexandria Zahra Jones. Bowie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in July of 1996 and before his death released over 25 studio albums.
