ShazM | 479 comments Young and famous model, Lula Landry, has fallen to her death from the balcony of her flat in London and almost everyone, including the police, think it was suicide. Her brother disagrees and hires slightly seedy private detective, Cormoran Strike, to discover the truth. Amongst the potential murder suspects are film directors, rappers, fashion designers and high-powered lawyers, some of whom are also members of Lula's dysfunctional family.

I really enjoyed this. There is a great cast of characters, who are mostly not likeable, but Strike and his new PA, Robin, are well written and I want to know what happens to them next. I did correctly guess who the murderer was but that didn't matter because Strike and Robin are more important than the mystery.

Glad to see a very positive review :)

Jgrace | 3934 comments I've enjoyed every book in this series , so far. And that is saying something because this is not a genre that I usually read.

Jgrace | 3934 comments Anna! Your comment is a major spoiler! Cuckoo's Calling is only the first book! ;)

Jgrace | 3934 comments And now I have to remove the part that got copied to my reply.

Sorry Shaz, Now, I'm feeling that I've rudely hijacked your review thread, like one of those mean girls who whispers secrets in front of the newbie.

Don't worry about it! I didn't see the spoiler at first but I read it anyway because I'm obviously late to the party on this series so I'd already seen hints. I don't often mind knowing something of a book before I read it as long as the story is good.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11060 comments I'm glad to see a positive review. I've read a lot of mysteries, so I agree that it's all about the characters. I saw a few iffy reviews, but I trust the author, so I know I'll read it eventually. It's one of the London books I just picked up in case I have extra time at the end of the month. I can't believe it's already the 15th (in my time zone anyway).
