Interest in audiobook profanity removing app?

Jesse Urban | 2 comments Hi, I asked this question in Book Talk, and Faith suggested I post this question here, and I heartily agree!

I love listening to audiobooks while working on hands on stuff, but became very frustrated with the common profanity--especially what is very offensive to me, taking God's name in vain in different ways (even mentioned in the 10 commandments!)--so I made a program that detects and mutes out the audio for profane words.

I was just curious how much interest there would be for such an app that would work on mobile devices? I suppose it would also be great for kids. If there seems to be sufficient interest, I'll make the app.

Let's take back decency of language and thought!
Jesse

Krysti Emerson | 1 comments That’s sounds awesome. I would definitely be interested. I have often started books that have a great plot line and have had to put it away because of language.

message 23: by Ken (new)

Ken | 59 comments I would love (and happily pay for) such an app--particularly for the desktop computer in my studio, which is where I listen to hundreds of audiobooks (and often choose to stop listening, due to profanity). I would also love such an app designed for e-books.

Would this app work on ANY audiobook, from CDs to public library downloads?

Nathan Barth | 2 comments Hi, I started listening to an audio story on Audible and I noticed there is a lot of profanity in one of the stories I was listening to. I have searched online for an app that could remove curse words or beep them out of the stories that have these bad words in them. I came across this discussion. I was just curious if the app was ever created if so I would be interested in paying for it to use it. Thank you.

It's compatible with your Audible library and lets you customize your listening experience to suit your preferences. Feel free to check out Siftbooks for a more family-friendly audiobook experience!

message 42: by Laurel (new)

Laurel (laurelanne) | 7 comments We had VidAngel for a while, until it dawned on me that someone had to watch scenes repeatedly in order to edit them for my benefit. That seems pretty hypocritical, so we’ve unsubscribed and are simply watching less tv.

You can search books on StoryGraph to preview all possible triggers. Tags are submitted by readers and include everything from “cursing” to “gaslighting” to “death of a parent”.

message 43: by Lael (new)

Lael Frenzel | 9 comments Honestly I don't know exactly how vid angel works but maybe in this day and age there is actually software/Artificial intelligence that is doing the "watching" and not so much the people? To each their own of course but in my way of thinking anything that promotes less guck for the masses is worth supporting. Wish there were more in Hollywood willing to stand up for cleaner shows/movies and then also Authors for books from the start. Happy reading.

message 44: by Kate Heninger (new)

Kate Heninger | 1 comments Yes please!!! I’m currently engrossed in a book but the language is so bad, I’m about to stop listening. I saw something about Siftbooks but I get a lot of audio books through my local library via Libby, Siftbooks is only compatible with Audible.
Any chance this app was created? Or something similar?

message 45: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Barnes | 20 comments Hi everyone! We've noticed a growing demand for filtering audiobooks, and we're excited to introduce Bleeped—an app we're developing to do exactly that! We're currently in the presales phase, and your support means everything to us as we work to bring this vision to life. Check us out at www.bleepedapp.com

Actually, Siftbooks leverages machines to filter books. No need to have people go through all that junk to create the filters.

We've started watching the Angel network for cleaner shows/movies. I agree that software or an app to filter out the muck would be beneficial. It's a little easier to check for offensive language or content in physical books, but it's nearly impossible with audiobooks (until you've started listening and come across it). I wish they had ratings and labels like movies do.
