I just didn't like the abrupt switch in the beginning chapters from privileged life as figurehead to abused captive of a sadistic guard. I think the author tried to explain things by doing flashbacks, but it confused me even more and I don't think it really explained a lot. Were her parents in on it, or were they just figureheads too? Was she born with her powers, or was it something that came out of stress? Who were the Dragon Warriors, and what's up with that guard? Too many questions! Too little answers! And of course, I want more dragons!

I agree that we didn't get a lot of explanatory back story, but I am assuming that everything will make more sense soon after the way the book ended. It was definitely written in that way where the first book is clearly an introduction to the rest of a series, but I felt that there was enough going on and Mira herself was interesting enough for me to overlook that.

I was a little disappointed because the blurb made it seem like such a big part of the story, but there weren’t many scenes with the actual dragons. There was lots of mentions of dragons; but not many dragon characters involved in the plot. Anyone else felt the same way?

There was a lot less dragon stuff than I expected, but personally I preferred that. Based on the ending, I think the sequel will have a lot more though.

I like Mira a lot and can relate to her struggles with anxiety. I think that part is described very well. But I also enjoy all the secondary characters, which is a nice bonus.
I thought the pacing of this first book was a little uneven and I’m not a big fan of huge cliffhanger endings. This is definitely a series where it’s better to read the books back-to-back because the next one picks up literally where this one ends. I’m guessing book three will do the same.
The pacing is better in book two and I can tell you that the dragons are much more present, which I loved. All the characters get good development in book two as well.
The final book is almost here! I hope it’s as good as the first two!
