Per the bookshelf, the October pick will be Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson.

Ms. Wilson talked with Sword and Laser about her book on Podcast 112.

I loved this one, and was the one who suggested it, so I'm pretty happy about the choice.

Rob (quintessential_defenestration) | 1035 comments Is this a particularly good one for audio? I'm at the monetary level of "only *highly* recommended books are to be picked up from audible"

Joe Informatico (joeinformatico) | 888 comments I've been meaning to read this since it came out, so I'm glad the fire's been lit under me. I've liked Wilson's work in comics so I'm eager to see how this turned out.

Dharmakirti | 942 comments I read Alif when it was first published and I greatly enjoyed it. I look forward to re-reading this with the group.

message 6: by Art (new) - rated it 5 stars

Art | 192 comments Really interested to read this. Have put a reserve on it at the library. Been really bad a reading along this year, so hoping to join in the last few reads in the coming months

Will (longklaw) | 261 comments I'm glad this book is finally a pick

Anne Schüßler (anneschuessler) | 847 comments Yay!

message 9: by Kevin (new) - added it

Kevin | 701 comments I have it and been planning to read it for ever. So this'll finally get me started.

message 10: by Ludo (last edited Sep 18, 2014 12:35AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ludo | 30 comments Sounds very interesting. Unfortunately, it's not available on Audible (Europe) - so I've ordered it in paperback. I recently read The Golem and the Jinni which also would have been a good sword pick.

message 11: by Erik (new) - rated it 4 stars

Erik Redin (erik_redin) | 149 comments Well, I was going to suggest we read G. Willow Wilson's Ms. Marvel, Vol. 1: No Normal as an alt pick this month, but it turns out the first trade won't be released until the last week of October. That's disappointing.

Rob, it seems this episode is no longer available in the archive? I tried the link but there seems to be a problem.

It might be a bad link. I searched real quick on my phone.

I'll have to look again when I get on a computer.

message 15: by Ben (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ben Rowe (benwickens) I think Alif the Unseen is a great choice for the club because it is:-

a) exciting
b) an entirely pleasurable reading experience
c) well written
d) innovative and different
e) It works totally well as an action story but there is plenty of depth and stuff going on under the surface so there is both much to enjoy and discuss
f) Its been around long enough that it is easy and cheap to get in a variety of formats.

That appears to be the same link.

Rob (quintessential_defenestration) | 1035 comments The show notes link works, it's the link to download the episode that doesn't.

I still haven't managed to get on a PC. I'll try to tonight and if I can't get a better link I'll talk to our fearless leaders about it.

message 19: by Art (new) - rated it 5 stars

Art | 192 comments ohhhh, she's the person behind the new Ms Marvel. Things are starting to click in my head now. Need to pick that up when it comes out, also looks interesting. Been hearing great things about it

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 2898 comments Love love love this book. Will probably reread!

Thanks. I emailed Veronica last night. She wasn't sure what happened to it. I wonder if she fixed it.

Phil | 1452 comments I'm quite happy this is the pick. Her writing on the Ms. Marvel comic has been great and it turns out I bought this as a Kindle deal a couple months ago.

Thank you for the link but I still get a page not found. Perhaps it's a proxy problem. Never mind, there is stuff enough about Ms. Wilson on the web. Have a nice reading weekend.

Hmm. It wasn't working for a bit for me either. But is now.

Did you try the direct link I put in the original post?

The one from the show notes redirects through podtrac, but the link above doesn't.

message 27: by Ludo (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ludo | 30 comments Rob...I still get an error massage: page not found. Alsof, a Search on the internet archive for the episode does not yield a result. We might have the case of the missing episode on our hands. The game's afoot!
But never mind. Thanks for effort anyway.

It's still working for me. Let me try rehosting it for you. I'll send you a link.

artofstu | 139 comments $10.49 for the Kindle version. Ugh.

message 30: by Kevin (new) - added it

Kevin | 701 comments http://www.amazon.com/Alif-Unseen-G-W... says $5.06 for me.

It's cheaper than $10.49 at various other places as well, but for those you a non-closed platform e-reader. :p

artofstu | 139 comments When I click on your link, it still says $10.49. Weird.

I discovered it's at my library, though, so I'm just going to check it out. I find I hardly ever purchase books for more than $10 anymore unless they're my favorite authors' brand new books (i.e. a book I've been waiting for).

message 32: by Will (new) - rated it 5 stars

Will (longklaw) | 261 comments I guess Captain Marvel and Ms Marvel are different people now. I'm way out of the loop on comics. I'll have to check out the new Ms Marvel

The old Ms Marvel is now Captain Marvel and the new Ms Marvel is a new character. Their writers are going a really great job of improving the representation of women in comics

Me too. In fact I rarely purchase anything that isn't on sale. $10.49 just isn't happening.

Great comic, one of my current favorites. Bummer that the timing wasn't right for the trade as an alternate read for the group. However, if you like comics and G. Willow Wilson's writing, highly recommended to check out when the trade does hit the shelves.

Robin Loving this one! Thanks for the suggestion. I especially like that different eyes see different things.

message 38: by Paolo (last edited Oct 02, 2014 06:15PM) (new)

Paolo Oh whoa, I just realized that AtU is both an October 2014 book of the month for Sword and Laser & SciFi and Fantasy Book Club...

(has that ever happened before?)

...didn't plan on reading it, but with that many people discussing this I just might :o

Leesa (leesalogic) | 675 comments I'm really enjoying this pick and I LOVE Wilson's take on Ms. Marvel. The art is fantastic too.
