Craig Dressler (craigdressler) | 28 comments I recently ran across a great middle grades science fiction series entitled "Robot Wars" by Sigmund Brouwer. A wheelchair bound youngster is the main character, and the novel moves along with action and creativity. The first book in the series is listed above. Here's another: Robot War

Kristin Crouch | 2 comments Have to add my three favorite middle grade sci-fis:
Enginerds by Jarrett Lerner (a mysterious box shows up on the protagonist's front porch, and when he opens it, a robot puts itself together (a very cool thing, until it's not!).
We're Not From Here by Geoff Rodkey (way into the future, Earth has been depleted. Humans are welcome to try living on another planet, and they go into hibernation for the journey. Twenty (human) years later, they arrive, only to be told they are no longer welcome. Protagonist & family have to prove humans are good enough to coexist on this new planet with various life forms.
The Absence of Sparrows by Kurt Kirchmeier (a mysterious illness turns humans to a substance resembling glass. Humans try to figure out just why it's happening, and how to handle it.)

All three of these books were AMAZING. I used to say I wasn't a fan of science fiction, until I read them. Turns out, I love science fiction done well!

I've read some good MG scifi in the past, but other than some interesting Santa scifi, not recently.

Julie Anne Grasso has now landed a publication deal in Australia, so I'll flag up her marvellous series starting with Return to the Forbidden Planet An elf-like girl who lives on a planet where cardomom is gold adventures to a robot planet and others...

Another good potential series I've not seen follow-ups in: Mammoth Trouble where a spaceship is damaged and lands on an icy planet

Ken Deeprose | 16 comments MG sci-fi can be tough to find. Big thanks to Kristen and Jemima - I just added four entries to my Want to Read list.

Raquelle Element (elementray932) | 28 comments I really enjoyed Felix XYZ.

Michelle (mostlymiddlegrade) | 3 comments Oh! I added Mammoth Trouble and The Absence of Sparrows to my TBR.

I really enjoyed the Moon Base Alpha series by Stuart Gibbs. I listened to all three on audio, which I thought was excellent.

Orion Lost by Alastair Chisholm is a space opera story that felt familiar in some ways, but really surprised me at times. It has really stuck with me.

Trouble in the Stars was interesting and heartwarming. With alien species and abilities, this one is good for feeding curiosity.

Weird Kid by Greg Van Eekout releases in one week and is an excellent, well-rounded story about an alien who is impersonating a boy on Earth. Cog by the same author was also really fun. A team of robots on an adventure to save their creator from an evil corporation!

Fuzzy by Tom Angleberger is about an AI robot being tested to see if it can integrate into a middle school environment. It's thought provoking and hilarious.

Wow. Thanks for recommending these.

Keith Yagerman | 7 comments Braxton Rogers and the Brave New Beyond by Keith Yagerman Braxton Rogers and the Brave New Beyond by me, Keith Yagerman.
This is the first of a series I'm working on. It features kids saving the day on a generation ship.

Braxton is a 10 year old boy struggling with PTSD after surviving an attack on his home in a planetary colony. Now on a generation ship, he and his family attempt to move forward with their lives, though its hard with his mother still missing. He struggles in school with a slight learning disability, and has issues with is little brother, who is exceptionally and noticeably smarter than other kids. Braxton loves video games, sports, films, and his father. Life is hard without his mom, but it gets a lot harder when he displays strange abilities that attract the attention of the wrong entity.

Everin is a single father, an injured veteran, and a fierce protector. But as his children reveal their abilities, it becomes apparent that he can't protect his kids from an ancient villain. And it's his kids that end up saving him and the entire ship.

Calkin is a boy genius and has high functioning autism. He misses his mother and has trouble getting close with his remaining family. But when things go wrong, he learns the true meaning of family and trust.

Lanara is Braxton's best friend. She was orphaned in the same colony attack and came to the ship with Braxton's family. She is his moral compass and most trusted companion. She also has the best abilities.

I hope you will check it out.

Sincerely,
Keith
