What's with the chrysalis, anyway?

John Berkowitz | 1 comments So I've finished the series. Brava! But there were a few questions left unanswered for me. And this one bugs me the most. Did I miss something?

wayword_witch | 24 comments The chrysalis-thing bugged me too and I've thought about it a lot. Here's my jumbled take on it.

***SPOILERS***

To me, it was a symbol of love and possibility. A gift that Rachel put up on a sill, and later a shelf, to save for another time. When Al takes it back, he leaves it in the garden of a dead elf woman. A place that is forgotten about and left in the past. Later, we find out that there's blue butterflies in Trent's garden so at some point, it must have opened. Maybe some else found it?

Just my thoughts. Kim says in last chapter they're a symbol of love and war. For me, that doesn't quite fit but it's her story. Can't wait to read Sudden Backtrack and find out what Al has to say.

Cindra (mztikicat) Somewhere along the way,it's mentioned that butterflies are attracted to carrion, as well as flowers. They also can signify change & rebirth. Seems almost to be a multifaceted, metaphorical reference. Throughout the series there has been so much love, war, change, growth & rebirth. Have always been concerned about that damn chrysalis. I called it an almost-butterfly @ one point. Haven't read the book yet, but sounds as if that chrysalis found a place to transform & transcend. Maybe the garden of a dead elf woman was where it was meant to be. ?

wayword_witch | 24 comments @Cindra. I agree with your thoughts on change throughout the Hollows and while I was disappointed it doesn't open on page, I think it does, eventually. And yes, I think it's exactly where it was meant to be as, I guess, it was never meant to open for Rachel.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I do wish it would have opened on page, too, that would have been great. It's played an important part - to me anyway - of the story all these books. I never connected the end blue butterflies with the last chapter, but that makes sense.

Sharon | 6 comments I still felt like the chrysalis was a loose end that was never properly tied. I wanted to actually see it open, not just see it discarded in an abandoned garden.

wayword_witch | 24 comments I read TWWNN book hoping it would open and was so sad reading that chapter. I also felt it was an important part about a fav character. For as long as Rachel had it and then nothing.
