Shirley | 4177 comments Are you finding errors with book titles, duplications, number of pages etc?

Are you a Goodreads librarian and would like to help?

Please use this thread and we'll try to help if we can.

Good idea Shirley! I am a GR librarian and able to help fix most minor issues.

One word of warning or advice -- something it took me forever to figure out -- some publishers use the same ISBN for several reprintings of the same book, so the cover and number of pages etc may not match your edition (even if the ISBN does match) if the publication date is different.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments @Shirley Great thread name!

@Leslie Your advice is well warranted as i know different page #'s and covers etc are a source of confusion to lots of us.

Are you going to design it?

message 9: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Ah, I think Amber's the one to ask for that, Gill. She's a whizz with the "Paint" program :)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments I have inherited from mu parents a hardcover copy of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, complete with gorgeous color illustrations, published in 1945. I've checked on Wiki and it shows as an actual printed book, not a bogus edition. The problem is that the book does not have a ISBN number; how do I enter it into the GR system? Any ideas, librarians?

You must only add a librarian note saying: "old edition without isbn".

You are not a librarian though I assume Bette? If you can find a page online that has all the relevant information on the book preferably with a picture of the cover that would be great. In this case just link it here and someone can add it for you. If not, you could list all relevant information here yourself. (publisher, year, page nr., and so on)

message 23: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Bette - I'm sure I've added books which predate ISBNs or even SBNs, and I'm not a librarian either. It's not a mandatory field. You just put in as much info as you have.

message 24: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Thanks, everyone. No, I'm not a librarian but I have often added books to GR. I thought it was a prerequisite that you must have a ISBN.

message 25: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Since lots of mine don't, it's a good job really...

message 26: by dely (new)

dely | 5214 comments Everyone can add books but only librarians can edit the bookpage or combine editions, if I don't remember wrong.

message 27: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Yes, and add the cover picture, too. Shame about that really.

message 28: by amber (new)

amber (thelittlematchgirl) | 371 comments You just check the box that says this edition has no isbn when filling in the information on the book.

message 29: by amber (new)

amber (thelittlematchgirl) | 371 comments non-librarians can edit the page for a book they added, if it hasn't been combined with an already added book.

message 30: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments This is actually great to know, because I've been a librarian for so long, I don't actually remember what one can or cannot do without librarian status.

message 31: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Coinicidentally I added a book with no ISBN yesterday. If you click on the box it says,

"Leave the box blank if the book doesn't have one. If it does please enter it or you'll have a duplicate record. Your book can either have an ISBN or an ASIN (Kindle ebooks), not both"

So it's not a mandatory field, nor is there anything to tick (or "check"). This is how it comes up in the UK anyway - perhaps it's different in the USA?

message 32: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin Dear librarians, I don't know who constantly changes things on Goodreads and why, but A Fine Balance was not first published in AD 214, and An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals was not published in 1392.

Thanks!

message 33: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments Genia, do you know when they were first published?

message 34: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin 1995 and 1751, respectively.

message 35: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments Jean wrote: "Yes, and add the cover picture, too. Shame about that really."

Anyone can add the cover picture of the book that they are adding but you have to be able to upload a jpg (can't link to an image on the web). The button for adding the cover is a bit hidden up near the top of the form but on the far right.

Genia, I'll fix those if they haven't been already!

It probably does the same thing here. I've never actually been adding a book without one, I just know you can add them, and figured if you got some kind of add isbn prompt clicking the box would fix it.

Sorry, I think only super-librarians can delete authors. I could edit the (nonexistent) info but there wasn't any delete button...

Gail (appleshoelace) I think anyone can become a librarian, if you ask to become one. I asked to become one, because there were books I'd read that weren't on the system yet, or books that had wrong info. It's really easy to add books or change incorrect details.

Me too, especially for Italian old books.

message 45: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Thanks for the correction, Leslie. I'll definitely look into that :)

message 46: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) Laura, yes, it seems to be older, more obscure books that aren't recorded. And books in translation are often recorded in an incomplete way - not joined with the original, for instance, but recorded as separate books.

Another thing I see sometimes is quotations that are wrong - attributed to the wrong author, or from the movie rather than the book. But I never correct them because I imagine there are far too many of them to correct!

message 47: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Please would you combine these two pages:
one and two

Although in page two, E. M. Forster has the fullstops correctly inserted between his initials, in page one we have a longer (although still not complete) list of his works. For some reason his most famous novel, A Passage to India isn't on either list. But the main thing is to combine the two, please.

Thank you :)

I'm merging the two wrong author pages with the right one, this: E.M. Forster. Now I will combine the different editions.

message 49: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) That's far better now. Thank you very much, dely :)

message 50: by dely (new)

dely | 5214 comments You're welcome ;-) I hope to have seen all the editions who were to combine.
