Book 1 - External Forces!

We start with Jess and her friend Jay. THeyre at prom and she gets cornered by a boy named blake. When he makes advances at her she punches him in the nose. But it happens in slow motion. She gets away but later she find she has a dark brown mark on her left side. She thinks its a sign that shes a deviant.

The story is set in the future where the world has been decimated by a huge comet. The comet is a sign that the world he been going to hell and that the people need to purify the races with genetic engineering. All crops are controlled by the government and everyone who isn't a deviant lives behind the fence.

Jess has just found out that she will have her assesment (to find out where she will go when she turns 17, work, army, parenting etc) early which only happens when they either think your a devient or are asibling of a deviant.

BOthe her and her best friend JAy advise a plan where Jess crack into the date base and changes her birth dates so that both her and Jay can get into the army to become special forces, Jay will go into airborne and Jess into Intelligence.

Unfortunately after the long process of training she doesn't get into intelligence, she gets picked by MATT for black ops. He picked her for her hacking skill and her great mind but it turns out that she can also pick things up super quickly.

Jess makes a few friends during her position at the camp including a super sharpe shooter named Sharee. both her and sharee get into some trouble when they beat Luke at dart (with knives). Luke is a complete savage. She corners jess later in the book and gropes her in which she breaks his fingers and after she notices that her mark has grown. She trying to hide her deviance.

Thourgh out the book her and matt start to get closer. He helped her get into the program because he wanted her on his squad but also because he liked her.

One night after training they decide to go to the tower and run the obstacle course. When Jess and Matt run off to a private place, Matt tells her he wants her to steal encrypted info so he can go over the wall and help those outside, as he no longer believe in the brutality that happens from the army and the American government. Jess says yes, but only because she wants to go too. she assumes that she will be found out and shot on the spot.

Through one way or another everyone gets on board, they get jess onto the mainframe and steal the info and put it on the disc. whe she comes out Pete ( a boy who was kinda interested in her and seemed kinda off to her) stops her and they know that her ratter her and the team out to the HBIC (head bitch in charge) and pete forces both her and matt into the area with the guardians and the chic (Cant remember her name, ill just call her HBIC)

Jess feels the anger rise and she know that its going to come out. She kills three guardians and Pete and then gets both her and Matt away. now he knows that shes got something wrong with her. They get over the oarder without the guards knowing they are escaping.

Over the boarder they have to meet their asset and get to the location, but gets trapped down when luke shows up with Jay stabbed. wit the help of the team they disposed of luke and his team and get out just in time, because they are tracked and can be blown up remotely.

Just before they leave they get cornered by feral animals and Jess snaps again. She saves almost everyone but Boyd when she goes all super human again.

After she wakes up shes in abarn covered in blood and she thinks that everyone hates her and they dont want anything to do with her. After a kind woman gets her cleaned up she goes into the building she gets cleaned up and decrypts the info that she has for them.

There she meets gabrielle who explains that 100 years ago there was a prophecy that someone with the mark will come down and bet he navigator who will find the articat that will help them open up the gates of eden (america) and right everything that worng.

Matt steps up and says that him because he was born on the excplise, but jess was also born on the eclipse and Jess can read the stars. But matt doesnt know that.

The ends with them at the farm, Gabrielle knows more they shes letting on because she was off when Jess introduced herself to the group, like she already knew her name. Jess thinks the gabrielle know that jess is also an eclipse baby.

so thast the jist of it....

questions:

Is she the navigator and how ill they find the artifact?
How will that help them solve the problems over the fence?
Will they take out he army?
Whats really going on with the info on the the drive?
What does Gabrielle know about Jess and if she isnt deviant what is she?

Okay I think I remember everything for the most part! It's coming back in bits and pieces!! I loved this book!! I can't believe how much I've forgotten!!!!

I definitely think Jess is the Navigator, but I think that Matt is somehow connected and super important as well. I guess we'll have to wait for the second book to find out :(

I'm curious to know what the info is on the drive and more about the devotees..

I just googled some more and remember a bit more.

I really loved how plausible this future scenario felt.. I'm just going to copy and paste an excerpt from a review...

"All the new technology that is developing to help us enhance experiences could fairly lead us into creating virtual realities, like the sim-seats described in the book. They were like being plugged into a computer. That part I thought was cool, but the bad part was this Genetic Integrity Act, which allowed the Department of Evolution to dispose of people who were “genetically deviated” in order to “cleanse” the species. It reminded me of the Nazis and their idea of the Arian race, which means that this dark piece of our history could repeat itself in a similar way; and this could be it. We are not so far away, if not there yet, from decrypting our DNA code and being able to make decisions in order to manipulate it. Therefore, this book actually raises a very delicate issue: how far are we ethically allowed to mess with this kind of information, of power and control over our genetic code?"

and..

"Rix does a great job intertwining the characters with spinning and building the tale around them, all through the eyes of a Jess, trying to understand the world around her. Leaving questions unanswered and doors open, Rix manages to tie in today’s concerns, the Tea Party, Monsanto, faith in God and the Patriot Act, all without being preachy. Rix is talking from the future, and this is our consequence.

Another thing that shocked me is Rix is really good at spilling blood, we are talking CGI good, and her battle scenes are graphic and descriptive. I have known Deborah for 30ish years, and the memories of her playing with kittens and puppies are now erased.

Did I mention that Jay is gay? Rix intertwines Jay’s sexuality into the plot so well that is becomes mater of fact, as she does with other plot elements. This is where I think the success of External Forces lies, Deborah’s ability to be matter of fact with just enough detail for us to believe this is the future."

It was sooo good, I devoured it! There's so much happening that there was no way I could write about it all without writing the book again. I loved the battle scene too! they were fantastically written and because they were done in slow motion, I pictured them in my head kinda like in the matrix. It was awesome!

The scenes with Matt were hot, he always came so close to her when he said things, you could literally feel the tension.

He should go in the Book Boyfriend list!
