This is a thread where you can introduce yourself to the group. This is one of our rules and guidelines.

Please introduce yourself here so we can welcome you. Tell us a little bit about yourself, the country where you are from and what you like about history or why you joined the group or anything else you would like to share.

Remember we allow no self promotion or spam. All such posts are deleted immediately.

Please feel free to read the introductions on this thread as well as the archived introductions and welcomes of our other group members. After you join, please also welcome newcomers. It is always great to make folks feel welcome and say hello.

Folks, we have this new thread open for introductions. You can always read all of the other welcomes and introductions in the other archived threads which we have closed because the threads are too huge (between 6 to 7,000 posts EACH for the first two archives) before. Unfortunately our last Introduction thread was affected by a spammer so we have archived that thread even though the spammer was handled by goodreads. We want the thread to be easy to use and easy for our moderators to manage.

So let us work to get this thread as large in due time as the other three.

We are happy to welcome all of our global members from at least 171 different countries around the world.

This is # one of our rules and guidelines to be a member.

Introduce yourself here.

Jimmy | 177 comments Hi. My name is Jimmy Pappas. I have been in this group for a while checking in on favorite topics and making a few comments, but I am introducing myself for the first time.

I was born in Boston. I have a BA in English with a minor in education from Bridgewater State University. I have an MA in English literature from Rivier University.

After college, I served in Vietnam for the military as an English instructor. I taught English to South Vietnamese soldiers and then they trained with American pilots. Before going to Vietnam, my training in how to teach English as a second language was with soldiers from all over the world. I actually watched the moon landing with Libyan soldiers. How cool is that. We cheered a great accomplishment for all humanity.

My main career was as a teacher. I retired a few years back. My claim to fame as a teacher was a high school philosophy class. That is not often taught at that level. I have never done anything to equal what a great thrill that was. It was a huge success.

Welcome Jimmy, thank you for your very interesting introduction and relating your experiences in teaching. Thank you for your service. We are happy that you have joined us in the History Book Club.

There are many folders where you can discuss topics that may interest you as well so please feel free to explore our many diverse threads. Here is a list of focus areas:

History Book Club's Focus Areas

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is an example of how the books you mention should look:

Hero of the Empire The Boer War, a Daring Escape, and the Making of Winston Churchill by Candice Millard by Candice Millard Candice Millard

Kevin | 1 comments Hello Group,

My name is Kevin and I live in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. I've always loved reading, particularly history, for the way it lets me look at the world, seeing paths and connections that I might otherwise miss. I appreciate novels for the chance to see things through someone else's eyes and, maybe, opening my own more. I think reading history does the same with the added benefit that what you see may actually be something that happened.

Kevin Duncan | 1 comments Hello everyone. My name is Kevin and I am from Ohio. I fell in love with studying history through the scope of the academic discipline political science. My primary focus is studying roll call voting of legislatures when passing landmark legislation. I grew fond of this theme while pursuing a Masters degree in political science. Although, my scope is quantitative in nature, I have to appreciate the background narratives of the empirical analysis such as the roll call voting during the New Deal and Gilded Age. Understanding the history of roll call voting can give use a better explanation on voting patterns today.

My rationale for joining the group is to collaborate over research questions and hypothesizing our theories through the scope of theoretical frameworks.

Lu | 1 comments Hello, my name is Lu. I'm a college student and casual reader from Austria. History has always intrigued me but I never looked into it outside of school. My history knowledge is quite limited and Eurocentric so I'm hoping to broaden my understanding of global history.

If anyone has some recommendations for essential history books (on any country/region and time period), I'd be very grateful :-)

Cheers!

My name is Charles. I'm a history nut. I live in Kentucky, was born in England, and was brought up in Uganda and Newfoundland. My history interests span East Africa, Canada, England, the USA, and many other countries. My degrees are economics/english, and an MBA. I am also a stamp collector who loves the history captured in those tiny images. My collection focuses on (wait for it!) Uganda and Newfoundland!
Thanks!

Right at this moment, I'm most interested in gathering some books detailing the histories of Pacific Islanders (Australian Aboriginals, Maoris, Samoans, etc,.) as it seems there isn't a lot of books on the topic... I'm not sure where to look.

Stuart | 2 comments Hi I’m Stuart
I live in Cheltenham UK. I was never a big reader but always loved history documentaries growing up, obviously a large proportion of which were on WW2. Within the last year I’ve stared to read history avidly and I’m starting to branch out, though only slightly. I’m in a real Napoleonic Wars phase at the moment and was wondering what one volume book does it the most justice as I will be embarking on Andrew Roberts Napoleon The Great soon. I’d also like to know what’s the best book to read on the entirety of the British Empire that gives a fair and balanced viewpoint. As you can imagine in the UK it’s glossed over and never got a mention at growing up. Ps I’m also a complete Titanic nut, always have been

What a nice introduction, Stuart. We welcome you to The History Book Club. We have a variety of folders which may interest you. There are many topics for you to peruse and we have discussions on lots of different books. Hope you can join in.

Based on your post, you may find something to interest you in these topics:

British history
Napoleonic Wars

I suggest you check out our homepage and see what else we have to offer. You can access it through this link:

History Book Club main page

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

SPQR A History of Ancient Rome by Mary Beard by Mary Beard Mary Beard

I’m joining from Boston, Mass. I enjoy reading history and am looking to make a concerted effort to read more history in the coming months, particularly American political history, although I expect to dabble in other areas as well.

Looking forward to seeing what others are reading and discussing!
