I am running late in starting this. Had a book to finish up for a challenge and then I got sucked into Archangel's War which would not stop yelling at me until I picked it up. And I'm loving it =D

I'm going to read this next week however.

Have you started yet?

What do you make of Pennyroyal? He seems a bit of an odd cookie..

I'm onto chapter 6 in a bit.

He seems like the biggest scam artist ever! I'm not sure whether you've read Harry Potter but he seems like the character that comes in and has written all those books about adventures only turns out its someone else's stories that are stolen ...

Tahmina (tpopal) So I've read up to chapter 15 today!! And don't worry I will probably be slow until Saturday. Hosting a Baby shower for my friend but I will be able to comment on anything you read.

The fact that everyone who meets Hester and Tom constantly notices Hester as ugly and Tom as "nice' "saintly" or "sweet" for staying with her drives me crazy considering the main reason they are alive is because they keep each other alive. I keep forgetting how young they are. Its been two years since the last book and they are almost 18!!! So dang thats young.

I am American and I notice a lot of America hating lines that are just thrown in there and how the people there are barbarians. soo BOOOOO!!!

The version of history that they have or sooooo close to our history but somehow so wrong. It makes me wonder what we might possibly have gotten wrong as well.

From the conversations of the four wives of Blinkoe I think Pennyroyal's a womanizer. He also only ever talks about women that he went on expeditions with. His name also reminds me of the Nirvana song Pennyroyal Tea which wasn't a happy song soooo ... that could have also tainted my view of him. He has no morals when it comes to money and flakes out on his bills. Don't read spoiler if you haven't finished 15. (view spoiler)

Tom (view spoiler)

Freya seems like a child that was over indulged and doesn't know what to do. When she says that the plague hit everyone the year before I was a bit surprised because she really knows nothing. And that bothers me because what the hell did she learn at school?

Smew: I thought that all the people that were servants and workman were called Smew because Freya kept calling him by different titles. And then it turned out to be one person. I felt kind of dumb. (view spoiler)

Green Storm (view spoiler)

Uncle(view spoiler)

Caul and his friends (view spoiler)

Hester and Freya(view spoiler)

So all this talk about the Americas possibly having green untainted land makes me think they might find something ... what do you think?

Hahaha true! He does remind a little bit of Gilderoy Lockhart!

I think the apprentice (I can't remember her name) was pretty radical even in the first book but I didn't think she would become a leader of a terrorist group or any group for that matter. She just seemed like a random little girl. But I do think extremist groups do often perverse whatever ideology they are using often, I think, opposed to whatever the original person was trying to get at. So that part fits to real life example.

Uncle: I think they have to be orphans. Especially in this world I don't see the finding of orphans that hard. But yeah I really want to see how this is going to play out. It came out of nowhere.

Caul: He seems so empathetic and sweet and it seems against his better judgement. Which I really like. This world is horrible with the kinds of people that live in it.

Hester and Freya: Ok I do agree that Hester most likely would not like anyone anyway. But right now their hatred is rooted in Tom and he's super annoying!

Tom: I'm so over him!

Pennyroyal: Yes!! I just wonder what we will find out about him at the end.

I Plan on reading at least five more chapters tonight. I finally am done with the baby shower and it looks like my sickness has gone away too. So Yay!!!! But my house also looks like a tornado, earthquake, Hurricane all hit at once.... so I might have to clean up a little too.

Eldarwen | 13645 comments Mod
You've been sick, too? :-/ Must be this ever-changing weirdo weather.. (at least that's what it's like in my neck of the woods).

How was the baby shower?? :-)

I'll refrain from further commenting until you're done with the book then. But I agree with your statement on the extremist group. And on the fact that Sathya didn't strike me as a personality to become a leader (still doesn't).

Also, Caul is a dear :-D

A little note though before I forget to mention it again: I'm always surprised by the writing in these books. At first it drags a little and it comes across as slightly simplistic at times with little to no character development, and then all of a sudden in that oh-so-simplistic writing something massive happens like at the end of part two (view spoiler) That's the kind of moment where the simple writing hits like a hammer and works really well.

I've been sick for a month. Just a cough that won't go away but finally did. And I know I am better cause I can't sleep for twelve hours now. :) Yeah same here. I'm not sure where you're from but here its been 90 degrees then 50 raining and cloudy and thunderstorms and your like huh??

Baby shower went well. It was Halloween themed so we had fun with it.

OOO you finished alread hahaha. How is it I always start ahead but finish after!!!! I read up to 20 last night though.

Sathya just seems off to me. I am at the part where its Anna Fang in some sort of prison and she's trying to make her remember her past life and its sooooo weird. And she doesn't even realize that Hester saved her life. She lets her emotions get in the way of leading and thats not always a bad thing but in this instance its horrible.

Love Caul so far too!

Ok I will read your spoiler when I'm at the end of the book!

message 17: by Tahmina (new)

Tahmina (tpopal) Ok so finished chapter 28:

Hopefully will be done with book today!!! At least thats the plan!

Remaining Part one:

Uncle: Reading this section made me realize it was not Valentine :) but no one said I couldn't have crack pot theories! This guy is pretty smart to somehow not even be on anyones radar. But he's cruel and horrible. Hopefully someone gets rid of him because he is just the worst.

Hester: She just comes out looking horrible in this section. I mean she sells out a whole town (most of the people who were nice to her) just to get back at one girl. I can understand being hurt and wanting to do some serious damage but I can't understand hurting innocent people and treating them as collateral damage. And her instincts on people aren't the same as they used to be either. She let herself trust some random person!

Part two:

Hester: She again doesn't come off looking so great. She just seems horrible and not really bright in this section and that's not really what we are used to seeing from her. But she does start thinking of her father and why he would treat her differently then Kat and I have to wonder the same thing.

Sathya: She is just horrible until the end. Towards the end she clearly is regretting her choices and going as far as she has but there is no way out and it's too late once Anna is out. I think she still could have stopped it when she realized she was being stupid but was obviously too scared.

Lost boys: Their mass slaughter was depressing. Still have Caul and some others in the submarine but everyone else is gone. And I just can't help think UNCLE is the worst. He sent a bunch of kids to their death.

Skewer: When he put himself in charge I was like ooooo no. this can't be good and he was horrible. But Uncle was also brutal and abusive towards him. I'm with Tom on this. I can't understand why these kids would stay with him. There's so many of them he wouldn't stand a chance.

Freya: Still a spoiled brat but towards the end of the part gets a bit better.

Scabious: He just started to snap out of his listlessness and that was really nice to see. He finally starts to grief for his son which was sad. But I am so glad he got to do it! He seems like a genuinely good person as everyone else on Anchorage. I just hope he notices the other city coming for them!

Tom: When the hell did he become ..... smart? Like he figured out Pennyroyal and Uncle and I was like finally!!!

Greenstorm: the way that whole thing went down is crazy. I can't believe that of all people Anna remembered Tom. But it was chilling to see her take command and not have any feelings towards anyone around her. The experiments that they are doing and the fight they want is just horrible and terroristic. So I just can't see where this will go.

You know, I was wondering for a brief moment as well if it was Valentine haha but dismissed the theory pretty quickly because I think it would have been really difficult for him to survive the end of book one.

Eurgh, yes!! I was not and I mean not at all a fan of Hester around the end of part one - and for quite a while after that actually. I wonder sometimes if it is done intentionally that her inner "qualities" reflect her outside so that it fits. Granted, with what she has been through, I would probably not be a sunshine either but she is a resentful cow!

Ahahahaha, yes! Tom really turned around didn't he? ;-)

message 19: by Tahmina (new)

Tahmina (tpopal) Done with 2!!

Uncle's backstory is the worst. He somehow thought that a slave somehow chose to love him and betray him when in actuality she had no choice. She was a slave. Somehow him and Pennyroyal get worse and worse. How is that possible. I am so annoyed that neither of them had anything bad happened to them and they were the worst sort of people but in the end of the first book everyone died!

Poor Caul but I'm glad it seems like he will get a happy ending in this. And Gargle turned out to be super scary!

Freya and Hester: Both were better towards the end of the book. I liked their character change especially after Tom left them. It seems to have done them both good. Freya came to her own and started to make new traditions for herself and I think because of that freethinking she was able to figure out that Pennyroyal was a fraud. Though both of them had moments I wanted to slap them they put their differences aside and did the right thing. So yay them!

Masgard: ummm this was like the big baddie and he was so easily defeated I thought it was a trick and was waiting for him to injure her or knock her out. Nope he dead!

And I am glad that despite Pennyroyal being a liar and fraud he still reported nuggets of truth. Overall not bad. With the two books we've read so far it seems that he likes to keep all the action at the end of the book.

Yeah what made me realize that it wasn't Valentine was when they talked about how young they were when Uncle took them and then I was like ok Nevermind He was in London at that time :(

On one of my other book discussions on these books one of the girls said that the protrayal of women in this book was really good. Because we always get a girl that is strong but spoiled in the beginning (e.g. Freya and Kate) but good. And by the end of the book they have taken it upon themselves to set everything right. And I think she was right. I feel that Tom is the biggest Damsel in these books.

Eldarwen | 13645 comments Mod
I just realised I never replied to your comments!

Hmm, yes, that is true, there's always the spoiled brat who turns into a resourceful woman. But I don't find that portrayal of women to be all that good when these particular characters are basically only used to counter-balance the horrible portrayal of Hester.

You're definitely right however about Tom being the biggest damsel in these books! He is certainly not what I expect from a "hero" character, which is (I think?!) what the author may be trying to portray him as - from time to time at least.

Ahahaha, yes!! That was so anti-climactic! o.O

He does tend to keep his action for the ending chapters of the books, it seems. But it makes the beginning draaaag so much sometimes, it's painful.

I can't really say I enjoy the books, and yet, there is something to them, and I do want to know how things pan out with those crazy rebels now.
