This is a place for you to discuss the book. Your thoughts, opinions, shocking moments, revealing moments, favourite quotes, etc. Whatever strikes your fancy in a good or a bad way, please let us know about it here.

There may be a few discussion questions thrown in at random as well. So keep your eyes on this topic!

=====================

If you are further along in the book and/or want to discuss something that might be a spoiler for slower readers or those who haven't started the book yet, please put it between spoiler tags. Thank you!

This is how they work:

Renata | 30 comments Received my copy today. Woohoo!!! I was reading it on Kindle for the time being. Will continue with the paperback now. :)

Justine Laismith (justinelaismith) I borrowed my copy from the local library and finished it yesterday.

This book has a sedentary pace. The narration is somewhat detached, but the story is told in such a deliberate way it intrigues.

I enjoyed the time and setting. I found myself sympathetic to the characters and the situation they are in. Mid-way through the book I asked myself if they were truly in love, as I could not sense it in the narration. I wonder if anyone else thought this too?

Hannah (yumonigiri) | 15 comments Just started reading it today. Finished Part 1, chapter 1 (German Edition, in case there’s a difference) and can’t help but wonder if Wanna telling Lin about her engagement had something to do with her boyfriend being sent away. Really can’t tell if Lin abused his power to get rid of a rival (which would honestly make him kind of a villain), and the book just doesn’t tell you outright, or if I‘m just a highly paranoid, distrustful reader. Whatever it is, I’m curious to find out more. But it’s probably never going to me mentioned again, huh?

Rafa | 3 comments I just finished it and I don't know what to say. I really liked the story and I really liked how each character's story was explained individually. But to be honest, nothing beats the writing style. It was just heart-touching......

Hey Hannah!
I am sure you have already read further and found your answer. I don't wanna spoil anything for you. But all I can say is the characters felt kinda, I don't know how to say it, real I guess.... I don't think you can define them with "black and white".

We are extended the read for this book from Oct/Nov into October as so many of us haven't been able to read the book yet.

Personally, I will try and start it next week so I can jump in on the discussion :-)

Renata | 30 comments This sounds good! I haven't finished it yet.

message 18: by Annemette (new)

Annemette | 28 comments I just finished the book and I really enjoyed it. It was in no way an 'action-book' but the slow pace was exactly what I needed now. The description of China through many years was so fascinating, I have only visited China once but found myself thinking a lot about the trip since the description of the places and the food made many memories come back and I think I understand the place they come from much better now. I also kept thinking I'm not sure this is love, it seems more like a friendship to me, and the end kind of made my point.

Veronica ⭐️ | 18 comments Sorry I'm so late with reading my copy. I am starting it today and as it is New Years Eve in Australia I should get a good chunk of it read while I wait for the new year to roll in.

message 21: by Veronica ⭐️ (new)

Veronica ⭐️ | 18 comments Well, I finally finished. It was a long slow read for me. Lin was useless and selfish and it made me angry the way he led Manna along for 18 years. Even the ending was a let down as Lin, finally having to do something for a change, complained about his lot in life and started to ponder whether he really loved Manna at all.
The lack of medical facilities available, even in the 80's, was a real eye opener.
I can only hope that Hua has a better life than Shuyu and Manna.
