This will be the thread for THE FEDERALIST PAPERS syllabus:

The Federalist Papers by Alexander Hamilton

I actually however purchased the Signet Classic which includes a copy of all of The Federalist Papers, a copy of the Constitution with cross references, a brief precis of each essay, an index of ideas, and copies of the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. I particularly like the way this is put together and cross referenced. The print size could have been a little bit bigger in the paperback. The Introduction and a great set of notes is done by Charles R. Kesler and this edition was edited by Clinton Rossiter.

This is what that edition looks like. There is no need to acquire an edition to participate because all of the 85 Federalist papers are on line and I have posted various urls. I like to mark up my copies so I usually purchase the book.

Joe (blues) The edition that you own is pictured at the bottom of post #1, is that correct? That copy is very common, and I have seen it numerous times at local used book stores.

I own a few copies of the federalist papers, but will look into grabbing the copy you have as well since it can be had for a dollar or so. Recently, I came across the leather bound Easton Press version which is without any extra study guides, but is a very hansom piece of workmanship, indeed.

Yes, that is the signet one; I wish that I had ordered it in hardcopy because the print is not sized as big as I like; but the edition itself has a lot of pluses; I have the paperback; maybe if you have a used book store handy you might be able to pick up the original.

Like I said in my posts, you can even read it on line without any expense whatsoever; but I have to mark up as I read so I can remember what I want to bring up in moderation or things that I want to just recall or highlight. If you have a Kindle or a Sony reader and download it; you can do the same.

Yes, I think the Signet is the most common one; but in fact I did like the features. I especially liked the constitution with the page cross references to TFP.

Easton Press has some great books and the print would have been better for me. That is why I pointed it out as a potential problem for some with the size of the print; in fact, the book store was out of the edition; I ordered it and had not seen the size of the print up close. It is OK with my reading glasses.

Bentley,

Is it too late to join this discussion? If not, how do I access the syllabus?

Thanks,

Don

Welcome, Dhenning1950. No, you are not too late... We are glad to have you join our discussion. Bentley is currently on vacation, but he has been able to connect and keep up with most discussions while he is away. Hopefully we all can continue this discussion, obviously looking forward to his return.

We are doing one essay each week, and the syllabus can be found within message #2 of this thread above. This coming week, we will be discussing Federalist #3. We all look forward to your participation.

Thank you so much Joe for helping Dhenning. And Joe is right..you have plenty of time...it will take us 85 weeks to get through all of the essays. We are only doing one a week (they run about three pages apiece - you can read them or even listen to them on audio) and so far I have found them very worthwhile. This week starting tomorrow we will also be talking about Federalist Paper #3. Reading what we have covered and even FP 3 would only run about 9 pages total. So you can catch up easily.

FEDERALIST PAPERS SYLLABUS - ONE PAPER PER WEEK - THIRD BATCH

For those of you who would like to read The Federalist Papers and never got the opportunity to do it; here is your chance.

During the months of November, December (2011), and January (2012)- the HBC will give the group members the opportunity to read or reread papers 1 - 31 and discuss any or all once again.

There are threads already set up for each paper from 1 - 31 and they are already open for posting because we covered those originally in two batches.

We will continue our new quest in February (beginning on February 6th) -- in terms of the next batch of 15 papers which we have not yet discussed.

So remember all group members can post away on any of the first 31 papers starting today. The papers are very short - two or three pages each so they are easy to fit in and comment upon if you are trying to fit this reading into an already busy schedule.

This will give everyone an opportunity to participate at their own pace and give folks an opportunity to catch up prior to February 6, 2012 when we start moving through the third segment of papers.

As we have done before, we will continue to discuss THE FEDERALIST PAPERS at a slow pace with one paper being covered each week.

The third grouping of The Federalist Papers includes the next fifteen papers (32 though 46) as follows:

FEDERALIST No. 32 Concerning the General Power of Taxation - Cont'd (Hamilton)
February 6, 2012 - February 12 (page 193)

FEDERALIST No. 33 Concerning the General Power of Taxation - Cont'd (Hamilton)
February 13, 2012 - February 19 (page 197)

FEDERALIST No. 34 Concerning the General Power of Taxation - Cont'd (Hamilton)
February 20, 2012 - February 26 (page 201)

FEDERALIST No. 35 Concerning the General Power of Taxation - Cont'd (Hamilton)
February 27, 2012 - March 4 (page 207)

Maegan Davis | 3 comments I assume based on these posts that this book has already been read. The home page of the book group states that you will be reading The Federalist Papers starting in January of 2012. Are you starting it again or is that a miss print? Just trying to figure out what books are being read by the group.

No, check the previous post for the syllabus for the next batch of the Federalist Papers - right now folks should be catching though 31. We will start on paper 32 on February 6th. Just go to the pre-existing threads for 1 - 31 and read each paper and comment on your impressions of each paper quoting or citing your favorite segments.
