W I read a lot of books on my phone, though it is hard on the eyes. But the phone is always with me,and I can read anytime.

Woman Reading (is away exploring) | 485 comments I do as well because of my library's online lending platform. I really like the feature of creating & labeling bookmarks in addition, of course, of having something portable. To save my vision, though,
I'm on the lookout for a tablet.

Nell | 438 comments I do read books on my phone but only when I am away from home. The app syncs with my Kindle so I can pick up an ebook where I left off while I stand in line, wait for a program or appointment, at a restaurant, etc.

message 4: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I lurv my Samsung Android tablet....

message 5: by Penny (new)

Penny | 6 comments I have never tried reading a book on my phone. I have a hard enough time trying to read text messages! Interesting thought to be able to read in lines and waiting for appointments though. I almost always have my iPad with me and read on that daily. If I am strapped for space, I have a small Kindle also.

message 6: by Loretta (new)

Loretta Lee Read library books on my phone all the time. Perfect for lying on your side in bed with the phone held close to my face!

message 7: by Banshee (new)

Banshee (bansheethecat) | 17 comments Roughly half of my reading time is on my phone. I used to read on a e-reader, but I grew tired of it because of the size and lack of internal lightning (it's an older, simple model). If I'm in a position of having my hands available and appropriate external lightning, I actually prefer to read a physical book.

The phone is convenient, because it's always with me and it's much smaller than a reader. In this way I can easily catch a few pages during morning routine, in a waiting room, on a lunch break at work, etc.

I'm using Libby app for borrowed ebooks and audiobooks and an epub-reading app for the ebooks I own.

message 8: by Luiz Fernando (new)

Luiz Fernando | 76 comments I'm unable to read books on a phone, or a tablet, or even an e-reader. I can read an article, the news, text messages... but not a book.

When I read a book I must concentrate on the reading, and that is not possible if I do it on an electronic device. It seems like it's not the correct way of reading a book, or like I'm not doing it justice. I must hold the book and turn the pages. And love the smell of books too.

If type size is a problem, you can enlarge it on the Kindle app. Don't know if this feature is available on others.

message 10: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I still prefer a real book. I absolutely understand Luiz's perspective, above. But so many books that I want to read for group discussions are only avl. to me digitally that I've gotten *somewhat* accustomed to reading on my tablet.

It's lovely to me that openlibrary.org scans actual real books, so I can still see the original errata, typeface, etc. It does mean the books aren't searchable as are pdfs, but that's a small sacrifice imo.

Robin (rwiiihardy) | 236 comments I read books on my phone when I'm on the bus, waiting in lines, having lunch, between classes, going to bed, et cetera. It's very convenient!
I still prefer physical books, though, and they make it easier than phones or computers for me to concentrate.

message 12: by Bookworm (new)

Bookworm (catsy2008) I do, but only when I finish a paper book I have with me. it's too easy to buy heaps of books...

message 13: by W (new)

W It was getting too hard on the eyes,so now I'm again getting back to paper books.

message 14: by R.S. (new)

R.S. Merritt | 6 comments I've tried but it's horrible. Like three sentences before you have to turn the page. I prefer the iPad kindle app.

message 15: by Megan (new)

Megan | 1 comments Yes! It's nice for daily commute/lunch breaks so you don't have to bring a whole e-reader around. I would recommend putting your phone in sepia, and/or putting the e-reading app in sepia. It really helps with eye strain.

message 16: by The Lazy Reader (new)

The Lazy Reader (icy_blues) Yes! It's not good for your eyes but really so convenient. I try to solve the eye strain problem by using a bluelight filter app. Sometimes, my laziness is against me.

message 17: by Nelson (new)

Nelson R. | 28 comments Most of my reading is from the phone, it’s an easy and convenient platform that is around me at all times. I think if I didn’t my reading would be lower.

message 18: by Marcie (new)

Marcie | 9 comments Not my preference, but always a go-to when waiting and without a hardcopy book.

message 19: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I read books on both my kindle and I Phone. Since I use up my charge so quickly I trade off between these two devices.

message 20: by Nidhi (new)

Nidhi Kumari | 73 comments Same here. I read a lot on my iPhone. iBooks has an immense library of classic e-books and I enjoy them.

message 21: by Valeria (new)

Valeria Martinez (chewie221b) I only read books on my phone that I can't afford to buy and therefore rely on free PDFs and EPUBs that I can find online. But I only do this when I'm reading popular book series or if I'm interested in a certain book and I don't wanna buy it yet. Other than that, I would much rather own hard copies because my eyes get tired at staring at screens for too long.

message 22: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) I have been reading more on my phone with this lock in. My library has hoopla. I can get books on my phone while the library is closed

message 23: by Yailene_Reads (new)

Yailene_Reads (yailene_rodas) | 2 comments I read a ton on my phone, either with the kindle app or by using Libby, my library app. It's been keeping me somewhat sane as ebooks/audiobooks are always available. And maybe its just me, but because they have time limits for how long you can borrow these books, they push me to sit down and read the entire thing so I won't freak out about holding on to it too long in case someone else is also waiting to read it. Plus overall, I push myself to read on my phone instead of endlessly scrolling through social media. It just works for me

Ellen (one more page) (carriedaway82) | 8 comments Yes, I do read on my phone. It's small convenient and it's has my Kindle app. I still like to hold books in my hand, browse through book shops and drink bookstore coffee. It has always been a favorite thing to do with my family and even though my kids are older now, we all still love it. My Kindle Fire is my second favorite, especially when it is a book club read and I can get it immediately and there is always the audio book option...so many choices!

message 25: by Kesa (new)

Kesa (mastoureh) | 21 comments i read on my ebook sometimes

message 26: by The Lazy Reader (new)

The Lazy Reader (icy_blues) I read a LOT of fanfiction on my phone, which is why my phone makes me doubly unproductive lol. Archive of our own is practically assured destruction of any work ethic. is it just me or is fanfiction crazy addictive.

message 27: by Mariana (new)

Mariana There are so many books I want to read that I can't concentrate just in one, so I'm jumping between 3 or 4 most of the time. Also, having them in many formats allows you to keep up with your reading everywhere. So i almost always have an audiobook (when your hands are busy), one on my Kindle, one on my phone (governmental library) and maybe a physical.

Books are not cheap to buy, so if you want 5 or 6 a month, or maybe a very recent book, it's easier and cheaper to buy them online or borrow them from online libraries. And many times you don't want to commit to a physical book you don't know if you'll like. Whenever I buy a paper book it's because I want to keep it.

message 28: by Heather (new)

Heather | 0 comments I like the feel of a book in my hands and the smell of the pages....yea I am a weirdo. I have inner ear issues, so I get motion sickness really easy. Trying to read in a car or on a bus always makes me sick, so no kindle or other devices for me

message 29: by France-Andrée (new)

France-Andrée (iphigenie72) | 413 comments I prefer reading on my ipad, but I read on the phone when I’m not home, I try to travel light so that’s the best option for reading big books like I do. I don’t read paper books a lot, only when it’s the only available format.

message 30: by Kayla (new)

Kayla Jennings | 16 comments I prefer reading actual books, especially hardcovers, but when I need to read an ebook I usually use my Kindle! I've read a couple of books on my phone when I forgot my Kindle at home or couldn't bring it with me, but I don't normally like reading on such a small screen.

message 31: by finka (new)

finka (finkas) | 2 comments I read a lot of ebooks from my phone bc its more convenient for me for example when sitting on public transportation or when it's dark in my room and it's much cheaper honestly. But there is no better feeling than owning a brand new book and smelling the new fresh book smell it gives, when I was younger I used to get from the libraries but I don't like that anymore bc many of the books smells just too old for me and they are so dusty or just dirty. I buy books only if Its a very anticipated book that I want to read or if it's from my favorite author or the book has very good reviews because there is nothing worse than spending around 10-20 € on a book that is not even good😭

I love the smell of new books too, but there's something so cozy about library/used bookstore books. Maybe cause I like to think about the other people who read the same book as me and it's like, we're connected by this book, lol.

I used to love it too but I don't remember when I started to develop the disgust of the smell....I can't even go to thriftshop anymore to buy books😅

Thank you for this idea! Lately, not as much but when I was commuting I always read e-books on my phone while balancing on the subway or riding the train into work.

message 35: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tanyareadstoomuch) | 10 comments I prefer reading a paper copy book but I can't deny the convenience of reading books on my phone. It's helpful when I am waiting because I am a tad but impatient but reading tends to relax me. I do find it cheaper and my family has noticed a large reduction of my stacks of books "to read" in my bookshelf. I will never stop going to book reads and tradeshows to support authors and buy their paper copy books... so my shelf will continue to get new additions.

Also, using my phone helps when I am away on holidays and it's a rainy day or I am too sunburned to go out. If I read on my phone it's a few less things to pack.

I am going to try changing the color though. I've never adjusted the brightness and that sounds like it would help reduce some of the screen glare.

Maybe you saw someone smelly holding a used book and now you can't help but think of them? 😆

message 37: by Megan (new)

Megan | 474 comments I read books on my phone too, usually when I’m stuck in a waiting room and bringing an actual book is a hassle. Reading too much on my phone is hard on my eyes. Using a larger ereader is better, but I still have less stamina reading off an electronic device than a physical book. I love the smell of most books too (some of them are too old and musty) and prefer actual books, but there are a lot of books I can only access as ebooks thru the library.

message 38: by J. (new)

J. Michael | 12 comments I like the convenience of reading from my phone. My most recent read is Mission 3-R by J. Michael. It's about how a treasonous General Ben Jackson steals a top secret trillion dollar time machine and leads a group of rogue African-American soldiers back in time 400 years, to prepare his African ancestors for when the first colonists set foot on the dark continent, and prevent the slave trade from taking place. The real kick to this story is all the deceit and conspiracies he uncovers on his journey. A friend recommended this book and I couldn't put it down once I started. You should definitely check it out on Amazon

message 42: by Samuel (new)

Samuel (kaisserds) | 90 comments I used to but once I got an e-reader I stopped. The only selling point for the phone anymore is the fact that I have it on me at all times but it's a very last resort. Whenever possible I try to have either the e-reader or a paper book available.

I don't buy paper books anymore, it's either digital or library from now on for me

message 47: by Adiaha (new)

Adiaha (thatdiachick) Majority of my smutty books are on my phone xP Buuut I love my physical books. I’m a home maker so the convenience of always having a book on me is not really an issue. And if we were to have an appointment I have a diaper bag I can toss it in with :)

message 48: by Andy (new)

Ananya Lockdown made me switch to ebooks but I read them on my Kindle. I can't read on phone, the size is just so small.
