message 3: by Johanna (new)

Johanna Ellwood (jpellwood) | 236 comments I wonder if this kind of sloth would work for the prompt?

Gina (ginabyun) | 8 comments The Brothers Karamazov is in my TBR.

Rose W | 119 comments Would any (or maybe all ) Shakespeare books work? I am trying to read one a year.....so would love to slot in this prompt

Jealousy and envy are related, so I think Othello would work. Maybe greed for the Merchant of Venice.

message 8: by Jessica (new)

Jessica McLaren | 4 comments I've read a couple reviews that say Bardugo's Ninth House has greed as a major theme. I can't confirm though, as I haven't read it yet!

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

A Confederacy of Dunces--sloth and gluttony

East of Eden--lots of Biblical themes

Most mystery novels would probably work, as would true crime, since these are frequently the motives for crimes.

Chrissi (clewand84) | 238 comments I'll toss Pride and Prejudice into the universe just because it's my perennial favorite. Pride, also. Read it just last year. Ayesha at Last is another great P&P re-telling - highly recommend!

A Woman Is No Man deals with the consequences of wrath, also envy and pride

Things Fall Apart - pride

Anything about Henry VIII and/or his wives would fit many of these categories. Alison Weir and Philippa Gregory's novels take into account lust, greed, pride ...

Jane Eyre & Mr. Rochester - lust, pride

Then She Was Gone - greed, envy

What Was She Thinking? Notes on a Scandal - lust

message 11: by VanesGirl (new)

VanesGirl | 92 comments Unforgivable Love - lust, envy, wrath

message 13: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 10 comments I'm going to read My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh

message 14: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 65 comments Ooh I'm thinking The Gifted School works for greed.

message 15: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 109 comments I want to read Rich People Problems, the last book in the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy: based on the previous books, I'm sure that greed and envy are likely to feature (and probably most of the other sins too!)

message 16: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1301 comments I'm thinking most all fiction will work for this :)

You're probably right!

The Little Book of Sloth Philosophy by Jennifer McCartney"

For sure it would! Especially since it seems the book is not about the animal, but about embracing "sloth" or laziness as a virtue.

I would certainly think so.

message 21: by Amy J. (new)

Amy J. | 74 comments J.R. Ward's Fallen Angel Series is perfect for this.

message 22: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Wick (imapiecemaker) | 27 comments The Last Mrs. Parrish had a theme of greed and envy.

message 23: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 734 comments I can think of a possible murder scenario for any of the seven deadly sins so it will be a murder mystery for me. They are called the ~deadly~ sins after all!

message 24: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Weber | 270 comments I'm trying to fit Lethal White into this challenge. Can anyone tell me if it might fit this prompt? I assume it might because there's usually a murder and the motive tends to be one of the seven deadly sins.

message 25: by Amy J. (new)

Amy J. | 74 comments Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi

With Vengeance in the title it should feature wrath.

Children of Virtue and Vengeance (Legacy of Orïsha, #2) by Tomi Adeyemi

message 27: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Harbeke | 698 comments If you want a sampling, Star Trek has a book called Seven Deadly Sins where each of the seven sins is represented by a different alien race.

message 28: by Alison (new)

Alison (alisonmeagan) | 24 comments I think I might read Lolita for this one. I've never read it, and it would definitely fit lol.

message 29: by Kenya (new)

Kenya Starflight | 986 comments There are several series that seem to have one book for each of the seven deadly sins, it looks like. I think my choice is going to be Envy of Angels, from the "Sin du Jour" series (about a restaurant that caters to devils).

KayLee Conley (butiprogress) Jessica wrote: "I've read a couple reviews that say Bardugo's Ninth House has greed as a major theme. I can't confirm though, as I haven't read it yet!"

Based on reading the cover excerpt I’d think it relates. I’m gonna give it a go, that’s been on my list for a while!

I read it this year and there is definitely lust in it

message 32: by Agnieszka (last edited Nov 23, 2019 04:36AM) (new)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) There's a new series by Cheryl Bradshaw (a spinn off of her Sloane Malone series) that fits this prompt perfectly. The first in series is Deadly Sins: Sloth - the books are novella length.

I expect one of my mystery/thrillers will have greed as reason for the crime so I'll let myself surprise which will be the first I like and I can fit here.

message 33: by K.L. (last edited Nov 23, 2019 06:23AM) (new)

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 851 comments If you want to read something where the sins take the form of characters, you could check out the Fullmetal Alchemist manga by Hiromu Arakawa. I'm not sure which volume introduces the Seven Deadly Sins though.

message 34: by Kelsey (last edited Nov 23, 2019 09:36AM) (new)

Kelsey (kelseyannek) I think I am going to go with the sin of envy and read Tove Jansson's The True Deceiver for this prompt. I love her sensitivity and perspective and Scandinavian settings, but it will be interesting to read something a little darker by her. I hadn't even heard of this book before trying to fill out my challenge list, and I'm so excited for it now!

MaryAnn (EmilyD1037) The Divine Comedy features all of them:
It is a trilogy:
Purgatorio, Inferno, and Paradiso.
Purgatorio directly deals with each.

message 37: by Taylor (new)

Taylor | 17 comments I may finally read A Game of Thrones series, thinking it will work here?

message 38: by Darci (new)

Darci Day | 164 comments The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue seems like it was made for this prompt, so I'm going to use that.

message 39: by Zo (new)

Zo (zocara) | 11 comments Rose wrote: "Would any (or maybe all ) Shakespeare books work? I am trying to read one a year.....so would love to slot in this prompt"
The Taming of the Shrew is all about wrath.

message 40: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (shadow2451) | 23 comments I'm going to read The Ghosts of Eden Park, themes of greed (bootlegging during Prohibition) and lust (the bootlegger's wife has an affair with the federal investigator).

message 41: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 135 comments Seven Ways We Lie looks to have all seven sins represented. It's been on my tbr for awhile, so I think I'm going with that one.

message 42: by Heather (new)

Heather (heatherbowman) | 904 comments After much deliberation and overthinking how to interpret this prompt, I've decided to read If We Were Villains by ML Rio. I read a review with character summaries and trigger warnings that made me think this might work for a couple different deadly sins.

message 43: by Conny (new)

Conny | 145 comments Greed is a major motivator for many murderers in Agatha Christie's detective novels, so if you enjoy those, at least one in three will work^^

Conny | 145 comments Jenn wrote: "Seven Ways We Lie looks to have all seven sins represented. It's been on my tbr for awhile, so I think I'm going with that one."

Just looked that one up and I'm intrigued already, thanks for sharing that tip!

Oooohhh, yes! Excellent choice! Definitely fits for greed and is such an excellent read!

message 47: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinajm) | 80 comments This one is already on my TBR list, so I'm going with this A Woman Is No Man

message 48: by Tanu (new)

Tanu (tanu_reads) | 115 comments I’m really struggling with this one. I guess the whole point is to push you out of your comfort zone, but none of the suggestions appeal to me so far. Maybe some Margo Lanagan? Her only novel is The Brides of Rollrock Island or whatever it’s called now. If anyone knows any good books for sloth, let me know.

A decent fantasy read would be good for this prompt. Something based on mythology.

I’d add The Secret History (sloth and probably pride), but I’ve read it about a hundred times.

IMO it has all of them! To varying degrees, admittedly (gluttony isn't a big feature) - but it very definitely fits the prompt.

message 50: by Theodora (new)

Theodora I think of reading Ayesha at Last as it would cover pride :)
