You all asked and I think it's an amazing idea: here, you can organise your own readalongs and I'll then make a separate thread for all of you to join in with, once there are more than 3 of you who have agreed to join in.
There unfortunately doesn't seem any better way to do this on Goodreads, but I'm hoping this will work!

Have a book you'd like to read with others? Leave the title here and when you'd like to begin, and then respond if you see someone else's that you'd also love to read!

I have started a new thread so that we're able to easily find that. Spencer if you want to head over there as well we can start to figure things out!

message 41: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiebeth83) I would like to join in a possible buddy read of Dracula, depending on if/when it happens. How exciting that it's going to be adapted into a TV series! I hope I'm able to find a way to watch it.

Marissa (mari08) KateADale wrote: "KateADale wrote: I'll be reading Emma and Northanger Abbey, if you're interested in those we could be reading buddies :)

I would also love to join in a buddy read for "Emma". Any month would work for me.

I also am planning to read "The Woman in White" this year but I was going to save it for the next round of Victober. I'm not committed to that month if anyone wants to read it sooner though.

message 43: by Marissa (new)

Marissa (mari08) Here are some of the classics I was thinking of reading this year. If anyone wants to join me please let me know and I'll make a new topic.

I'm open to any month for these books. I also don't mind doing buddy reads lasting more than one month because some of these novels can be long. I put some suggestions in parenthesis next to some of the books.

Wives and Daughters - Elizabeth Gaskell
A Simple Story - Elizabeth Inchbald
Love in the Countryside - Duiliu Zamfirescu (June)
The Half Sisters - Geraldine Jewsbury (October)
Zofloya: or The Moor - Charlotte Dacre

I wanted to also read The Tale of Genji at some point but that's a long book. We could possibly read over a period of 3-4 months. I'm looking at the Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition by the way.

I'm also interested in The Tale of Genji - and I agree that it would be a good idea do do it over several months.

message 45: by KateADale (new)

KateADale (hufflepuffbookworm) | 7 comments How about we start a Jane Austen Thread? That way we can read Jane Austen together.

message 46: by Marissa (new)

Marissa (mari08) I'm also interested in The Tale of Genji - and I agree that it would be a good idea do do it over several months.

In the unabridged Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition, there are 54 chapters. We can keep it light, start at the beginning of the year and aim to read 5 chapters a month (about 100 pages give or take). This will take us until November to complete it. Or we can split it over 5 months and read 12 chapters a month (around 200 pages give or take a month). The 5th month we would end up reading only 6 chapters.

I'm open to other ideas too. Splitting it over the course of the entire year has the advantage that people can join late and it might be easier to catch up. If we want to split it over 5 months we can start later in the year.

Looks like I have the same edition as you. As for reading speed, I think 5 chapters a month sounds good to begin with, especially since I have no idea what to expect of this book. Maybe I'll change my mind once I start reading it, but 5 chapters is a good place to start.
