MCLS Reading Challenge discussion

Hi Everyone,

Anyone up for trying to reboot this reading challenge? What do you think about a program where you get matched with a partner who recommends a new book for you each month? I’ve also had some feedback that some people would like to gather occasionally for coffee and to talk about books.

Any other ideas?

I didn't get to participate in the bingo year (at least reading-wise, haha), though I liked the concept. The only year I successfully completed a challenge was when we had a variety of genres and could pick and choose from among them. I'd be interested in doing something like that again. That was particularly conducive to my tastes since I read almost all comics/graphic novels and it's hard to participate in these things as a result :).
I also like the idea of a sharing element, though I couldn't say offhand what would work for me.

I like the idea of being accountable, so a partner each month (or the same partner for the year) would be good. Also posting books read for the group on Goodreads made me feel more accountable then just a checklist.

I'd be interested in forming/participating in a leadership inspired book discussion group. I have a growing pile of books such as Crucial Conversations, Palaces for the People, and a few Seth Godin titles threatening to take over my home. I need a push to pick up more nonfiction.

Amy, that’s a great idea. Pick a title and a date for a meet-up and post it out to the MCLSlist. I bet there will be interest. If you need some start-up $$ for anything, I can provide some support.

Not a lot of interest in the partner idea. I may try something a friend of mine is doing in an online group. He’s picking a reading theme for the month - so for January, the theme is Books with One Word Titles.

While we can keep this group and continue to use the bookshelves to record what we read, I will probably issue the theme via the mclslist. I’m thinking maybe we can do an informal monthly meet-up for those interested where I can continue to hand out giftcards through a drawing among those who attend.

I agree that posting on good reads worked well!

Just saw this now -- for some reason it's hit-or-miss as far as catching Good Reads messages in my email.
I like the partnering idea, and I especially like the idea of an occasional meetup. Using the MCLS list for communication is a great way to be sure people are seeing the messages. (While still using Good Reads for bookshelving.)
Regarding the leadership theme, I'm currently reading Decisive by Chip & Dan Heath. This would be another great choice for discussion.
