Any time I come across a book with a Ancestor in it makes my day. Good book with lots of information about the area, some I know and some I did not. I have one complaint, the genealogists in me would have like at least the Wives names and kids names included. As a descendant who was born and raised and still live in the area I am very thankful for books like this, it keep our history alive.
The pictures are a nice touch as well as the notes, Bibliography and index.
Can be a quick read if you want or need it to be.

Cat Cooper finds herself divorced, so she sells her Marketing firm and moves to east Hampton where she becomes a life coach. To add more drama in her life she finds herself living in a neighborhood with a mean girl named Heather. Things turn ugly and Cat along with her best friend Gilley try and solve what happened.
Cat Cooper is the Sister of Abby Cooper from the Psychic Eye Mystery series and her best friend Gilley comes from the Ghost Hunter Mystery series. This is a fast moving story that kept my attention. If you have read the other books you have an idea of Cat and Gilley's personalities and this does help a bit on how they are going to react to situations.

Taken from the inside cover of the book. "Winterdance is an unforgettable account of Gary Paulsen's most ambitious guest: to know a world beyond his knowing, to train for and run the Iditarod."
Gary Paulsen goes into the race with no real clue on what is going to happen to him and his dogs during the 1,180 mile race across the Alaska. Paulsen gives a very straight forward account of the ordeals he encounters. Some of things he witness from other races and non races are disgusting, heartbreaking and humorous. None of the his description are over the top but are very real look into life while pushing your body and soul thought his unforgiving terrain. I highly recommend this book if you like reading about others adventures and life learning lessons.

Taken from the back of the book. "Sugar Mae Cole doesn't often get downhearted but lately it's been a struggle to keep up her spirit. Newly homeless, Sugar and her mother, Reba, have come to Chicago to make a fresh start. When Reba has a serious breakdown, Sugar and her beloved rescue dog, Shush, are put into foster care." Good story line for preteens all the way to young adults. I like Joan Bauer's writing style and how she tackles the tough topic of homelessness. If I was younger and reading the book some of the actions and choices the adults made would not have crawled under my skin like they did but, being the age I am, I found them to be very self centered and annoying. Oh yes and love the dog, it is truly an important part of the girls coping mechanism.

Fascinating look into the world of bad manners, nasty habits and people not willing to change them. Also filled with finger pointing, blame games, belief bashing and quick fixes which some worked and some failed. Quote from the book "The 1918 flu was by far the worst epidemic that has ever affected humankind. No war, no natural disaster no famime has claimed as many lives. In eighteen months 500 million people contracted the flu-one-third of the world population as the time--and between 50 and 100 million people died." Book is filled with pictures to give you a feel of the time and peek into people affected and cartoonist renderings trying to sway thinking and to help people clean up their habits. Also has history unrelated to Influenza but needed to get the full picture of what was going on in the world at the time and the influence it had on how to deal with future fast spreading disease.

Ellie is trained from a early age to become a search and rescue dog. This wonderful heartwarming story is narrated by Ellie herself and through her eyes you see love, joy and bits of horror. and she is not just saving strangers she is saving her handlers, Jakob and Maya too. I really like how this written plot so I am going to use it. Taken form Wikipedia
"An old sailor named Billy Bones comes to lodge in the rural Admiral Benbow Inn on the West English coast. He tells the innkeeper's son, Jim Hawkins, to keep a lookout for "a one-legged seafaring man." A former shipmate, Black Dog, confronts Bones and engages in a violent fight with him. After Black Dog is run off, a blind beggar named Pew visits to give Bones "the black spot" as a summons to share a map leading to buried treasure. Shortly thereafter, Bones suffers a stroke and dies. Pew and his accomplices attack the inn, but Jim and his mother save themselves while taking Bones's sea chest. Inside the chest, they find a map of an island on which the infamous pirate Captain Flint hid his treasure. Jim shows the map to the local physician Dr. Livesey and the district squire John Trelawney, and they decide to make an expedition to the island, with Jim serving as a cabin boy. They set sail on Trelawney's schooner, the Hispaniola, under Captain Smollett. Much of the crew, as it is later revealed, are pirates who served under Captain Flint, most notable of which is the ship's one-legged chef "Long John" Silver. Jim, sitting in an apple casket, overhears the conspirators' plan to mutiny after the salvage of the treasure and to assassinate the skippers."
I did not quote all of Wikipedia because it does give away to much information on what was is going to happen.
This story is both fast moving a slow which I found freshening, to me that is a well balanced book.

I stopped reading on page 142 and skimmed the rest of the book to see where it was headed. I am not in a good place in my life for reading about a this type of dysfunctional family. The wife dealing with kids of all ages and her past. Then there is the emotional and sometime physically absent Father steaming from his violent past. This all is just to real for me. I do love her writing but not to to keen on the jumping back and forth in them so I am giving it two stars.

The adult version of Little House on the Prairie with Caroline being the voice. I wanted to love this book but I barely like the book. Caroline comes across, brash, cold, judgmental and with a few hints of being a fun, likes life, and her kids. I know times were hard back then and woman worked their butts off and had a lot on their plate but must your mind fight and question just about everything.
Sarah Miller takes fiction and Nonfiction parts of the Wilder family and mixes it all together to create this story. I truly enjoyed parts and it took me back to when I first read the Little House books other parts I just disliked. Again I wanted to love this book but just could not get past the over wording, dry and Caroline's personalty.

Kunal Nayyar does a wonderful job of showing he is human. I enjoyed his humor and getting to have a peek into his personal life and work life. I also liked the information he stuck in here and there about his culture's traditions. Only had one negative to say, I would have like pictures. Highly recommend this book to Big Bang Theory fans and non fans.

Taken from the back of the book. " On a cloudy day in August 2003, Grace and Lily Pearson, four and three, were flying in their uncle's plane along with their mother on their way to their grandpa's birthday party near Lake Superior, when Lily noticed the trees out the window where growing close; so close she could almost touch them. Before the trees tore into the cabin, Grace had the strange sensation of falling through clouds."
Grace and Lily Pearson's Mother Kathryn did not make it nor did their Uncle Charlie. Their Father Toby were left to deal with aftermath and the care of the two very young girls medical needs and Aunt Carolyn(Kathryn's Sister) dealing with the death of her husband Charlie.
The beginning of the book pulled me into this heartbreaking story and had me on the verge of tears. The description of the crash and the girls clam demeanor was such a contrast that it was almost surreal for me to read, I can just imagine what the rescuers were feeling. The rest of the book lost that pulling you in and making you feel it feeling when it went into the Medical, insurance and court details. Still a good book and I liked Damian Fowler writing style.

Orphan by Roger Dean Kiser

5 stars
Taken from the back of the book. "By the age of four, Roger Dean Kiser, Sr. had been abandoned first by his parents and then his grandparents, and placed in a Florida orphanage. Unable to adapt to the difficult, often cruel environment of the orphanage, and stigmatized by his repeated attempts to run away, he was transferred to local reform school at age twelve." I don't agree with a lot of this quote. Roger Kiser was taken away from his abusive, self centered, low life parents and Grandparents not abandoned. The orphanage was a house of horrors. How is someone suppose to adapt if you don't feel welcomed, cared about and not given guidance on right and wrong just beaten down physically and mentally. No wonder he wanted to run away all the time. Roger Kiser is very open and straight forward about being physically, mentally and sexually abused growing up but not overly graphic with his descriptions.

Just what the title says"You Learn By Living" book. Filled with stories on her first hand experience and what she observed from others around her as she lived her life. Book is dry and straight forward and filled with her wisdom quotes. I think I rolled my eyes only a few times. It is overall a good book with good advice but parts are kinda dated for this day and age. The common sense parts of the book can never be outdated. I am happy I read the book has been on my TBR mountain for some time, worth the read.

A collection of short stories about dogs who found the right human. The stories are written by the owners of the dogs on how they started their life together. Some stories are a brief half page and other a couple pages, all have a picture to accompanying them. This book shows for every evil person in the world there is a Angel to step in a make things right and help an animal heal.

Every time I read a celebrity written book I swear I am not going to read another one, they are all basically have the same lay out, grew up in some kind of dysfunctional family, was either shy or over the top in childhood, wanted fame, got fame , could not handle fame, started drinking/ doing drugs or both, hit rock bottom, self destructed then on to rebuilt or rebuilding self. This book is all the above and more, this is Elton John on every single page. He does not hold back and lays out his life for all to see. I do like some of his music so this was an interesting, fun book to read.

When I started the book I was sure I was never going to be able to get into it. It is one of the most unique memoirs I have read, so far. Here is one example of why this book drew me in and kept me interested. "For trees that live in the snow, winter is a journey. Plants do not travel through space as we do: as a rule they do not move from place to place. Instead they travel through time, enduring one event after the other, and in this sense, winter is a particularly long trip. Trees follow the standard advice given for any extended travel within a rustic setting: pack carefully." To me it reads like poetry and I love it. As for Hope Jahren, she is hard to pinpoint on the kind of person she is. I conclude that she is intelligent, chained to knowledge, and has a hard time connecting and expressing without coming across as harsh or cocky. Plus, she is not completely comfortable with herself. Here is one more quote that I am going to finish with, to me it helps explain her and life in general. "Science is work, nothing more and nothing less. And so we will keep working as another day dawns and this week turns into next week, and then this month becomes next month. I can feel the warmth of the same brilliant sun that shines above the forest and onto the green, but in my heart I know that I am not a plant. I am more like an ant, driven to find and carry single dead needles, on after the other, all the way across the forest and then add them one by one to a pile so massive that I can only fully imagine one small corner of it. "

Farley Mowat is a Wonderful story teller. Take a nonfiction tell/report and sprinkle in a dash of fiction here and there, makes a wonderful story. I can see the controversy on if this is real or not, he does a half job of the research part. He goes into areas of why but does not conclude with an answer because he does not do any follow up or continue the research, just assumes. This book should have been published as fiction and it would have been welcomed with open arms. I am very happy I read it, been on my list for a long time but I am just going to have to give it three stars, it lacks real overall views of the big picture of the life of the Wolf.

I was drawn to the book because it is about a prison ranch in New Mexico, my home state. I got much more than just a book about horses. Ginger Gaffney puts her world out there to read about, she is very open and raw about her relationships with humans and animals. Some stories pull you, make you think and a couple stories cut short and leave you hanging but overall it is a great book.
The best quote, I feel truly says it best, is from the write up about the book. "As Gaffney peels away the layers of her own story— a solitary childhood, painful introversion, and a trans-formative connection with her first horse, a filly named Belle— she, too, learns to trust people as much as she trusts horses. Half Broke is a resonant memoir with a spirited, memorable cast that describes the fascinating ways both horses and humans seek relationships to survive."

I am not sure I can fully put into words on how I feel about this book but I will try. Marlene Miller comes from a dysfunctional family. Starts dating a Amish man and gets pregnant so they get married.
She decides to become Amish herself and they have lots more kids. You can tell she did not grow up on the Amish involvement, she complains a lot about having 10 kids, lack of money and the struggles of having a farm plus has very little patience. Some of the story are just so sad and others I wonder if the woman was born with any common sense. Marlene Miller is very open and raw at time but lacks a full well rounded picture of just what is going on, kinda like she is holding back information. If you are looking for information about the Amish as a whole, skip this book, if you are looking for a peek into the life of a woman who married into the Amish then you might like this book. To me it was just a ok strangely put together book.

I don't know where to even begin on how much I just don't believe so I will start with what I do believe, I believe she was abused, done. She was not raised from birth in the Amish community so I will let it side on not fully knowing the ins and outs of how the Amish do things but it would have been nice if she would have done some research before she put things in the book, kinda loses it authenticity. I also believe that the parent and step parent used the Amish to hide their evil ways.
The book is over done with unnecessary details, I found myself skimming here and there.
I am happy she was strong enough to escape and it is wonderful to hear she was able to use her experiences to help others. Just wish this book would have been edited and facts checked more closely.

Synopsis taken from the back of the book. "In the first in this cat-filled cozy series, aspiring mystery author Sabrina Tate is about to discover that when it comes to solving murders, her new feline friend Hitchcock is a master of sleuthing…
"Sabrina has never been the superstitious type. Still, when she moves to Lavender, Texas, to write her first novel and help her Aunt Rowe manage her vacation rental business, Sabrina can’t avoid listening to the rumors that a local black cat is a jinx—especially after the stray in question leads her directly to the scene of a murder."
I have a like/dislike thing with Sabrina. She comes across as annoying and runs around with no clue on how to interact with people in most of the book. However, she is no quitter in trying to solve what happened to her cousin Bobby Joe Flowers who was found dead in a river. Sabrina's Aunt Rowe becomes the prime suspect because of the huge argument Bobby and her had the day before. The cat, Hitchcock, is the star of the book and he is just being a cat. The story line is good and moves along but at times it is boring. I am still giving it 4 stars because it did keep me guessing and was not over the top graphic with the murder scene.

Not going to do a big write up on this book. Not only was it a dry read, it was poorly put together and the stories were all over the place making it hard to keep a time line. The Author gives you their take on activities not allowing the voices of Dorothy and Rosamond, plus has unnecessary history here and there. You could tell Dorothy and her friend had lots of experiences and lived their life moment to moment but just had a hard time hearing their voices.

** spoiler alert ** "On the morning of April 28, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angles Public Library."
A wonderful inviting book that I just did not want to put down. I don't want to give to much away but below is a few snippets from the book.
"The day Elvis Presley died, someone checked out all the library's Elvis records and never returned them. The files about the Manson Family and about the Black Dahlia murder, which included clippings and ephemera, disappeared decades ago; they are essentially irreplaceable. In 1981, investigators discovered a women selling books out of the suited in a Beverly Hills hotel. She was earning approximately forty thousand dollars a year with her used-book business. All the the books had been stolen from the Las Angels Public Library."
"The first recorded instance of book burning was in 213 BC, when Chinese emperor Qin Shi Huang decided to incinerate any history books that contradicted his version of the past. In addition, he burned more than four thousand scholars alive."
"Burning books is an inefficient way to conduct a war, since books and libraries have no military value, but it is devastating act."
Now that is my kind of book. It is mixture of memoir,Biography, history, true crime with a dash of horror.
I highly recommend this book to history lovers.

4 starsI remember watching Dogtown. "Dogtown is the section of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary where homeless dogs live, and it is also a highly popular TV series. For four seasons, the television program "DogTown" aired on the National Geographic Channel. The documentary aired for the first time on January 4, 2008, and last aired an original episode on March 12, 2010."
This book was written so some of the proceeds could help support the Best Friends Animal Society.
The book is a collection of short stories about dogs that were rescued. Some come from horrific situations like dog fighting ring and puppy mills and some were just found. Some of the stories are hard to read but necessary to tell so you can see what the dog has gone through in order to appreciate the rehabilitation and redemption part of the tale even more. I enjoyed what few pictures there were but would have like more, especially one of the Sanctuary itself.

** spoiler alert ** Taken from the back of the book. "On October 2, 2006, a gunman entered an Amish one-room schoolhouse, shooting ten girls, killing five, then finally taking his own life." This story is from the Mother of the shooter, Charles Roberts IV. Not a easy subject to read about but there was much detail on what happened in the school house so that took a little of the sting out of the story. You can feel the emotion from the family on trying to process what happen and how to move on with forgiveness and everyday living. After I finished the book I wanted to know a little more about her motivational speaking. I was saddened to learn she past away on August 19, 2017. She was truly an inspiration.

Quote from the back of the book,"Daddy won't stand for color talk, either. He says a Colored family is like a beautiful bouquet of flowers--all different colors, sizes, and shapes. But each one beautiful in his or her own way. We only need to look at Daddy's side of the family to see that he's telling us the truth. The Love family is Just like the bouquet Daddy, described."
This fiction book follows the full year 1919 of Nellie Lee Love's thoughts about what is going on with her and the world around her. She experienced a death in the family and because what might have happen to her uncle the family moved from Bradford Corners, Tennessee to Chicago, Illinois where her parents believe there is more freedom and opportunity for black people.
Diary is a good perspective from a child's eyes and mind. The nonfiction part in the back of the book is a great tie in to events and people and has a few pictures.

I know a lot of people like this book but sorry I just could not get into it. Parts are overwritten and others under. When Jason, her husband, announced his dream to start an egg farm, Lucie is both supportive and unsupportive, I found this to be annoying. I fail to see the humor that everyone says they enjoyed. I will say I am happy they made a go of the business and hope they grow and prosper.

What a fun, cozy, Mystery. Bernie is a private investigator hired by a Mother trying to find her teenage daughter. Bernie's sidekick is a dog named Chet, who is the narrator. It took me a few chapters to get used to the Dog being the narrator but I hung in there and it became a flawless flow of entertainment. The Author's little details of a dog's look at things going on around them is what made it so inviting. Here is an example of what I am talking about. "Keefer licked his lips. The human tongue doesn't appear that often, and when it does, I always notice. This time, in combination with the goatee, it didn't sit right with me, no idea why." Bravo, Spencer Quinn for the quirky look at a dog's view moments. No over the top violence but it does have a couple of intense scenes with some humor to keep it in check.

Taken from the inside cover of the book jacket."Bernie and Chet are called on to investigate threats made against an unlikely target-a pretty, pampered show dog named Princess. What seems like a joke turns into a serious case when Princess and her owner are abducted." On top of all that, Bernie's love interest Susie, whom we meet in the first book, goes missing.
I am enjoying this series and there is a lot going on, making it a fast paced book. A couple of the scenes were upsetting and did leave you hanging for a few chapters but in the end all was put together. I must admit I thought I had it figured out on who did the deed but boy with all the twist and turns I was very wrong. Chet is being the slow but gets there detective and Bernie is being the usual good loyal dog. Can't wait to read the next book.

When I received this book in the mail, I did not think about who Felicia Day was. I ordered the book because the title fit a game and had a tag I needed for groups I am in and plus I like memoirs. I asked my Daughter and Husband if they knew who Felicia Day was and showed the book to them. They both said "Supernatural." I then look again at the cover, WELL DUH, I am a supernatural fan. I am horrible with names and the short hair threw me off. That being said I went into this book with a different look, I know her work but still don't know much about her. LOVED this book, it is not the usual celebrity book in any way. I found her approach to be very refreshing, funny and just plain raw at times. The more I read the more I became a fan and I could relate to so many experiences dealing with people and herself. I highly recommend this entertaining book.

Ishi is the last of his tribe after they were killed off or died while in hiding. "Ishi stumbled into the twentieth century on the morning of August 29, 1911, when, desperate with hunger and with terror of the white murderers of his family, he was found in the corral of a slaughter house near Oroville, California."
More than half of the book is about the his tribe the Yahi, one of the Yana tribes. What there is about Ishi is both interesting and disheartening. Knowing he was the last one of his tribe, had to find help from the people who had a part of killing them off and then having to adapt to their ways and thinking in order to survive makes me in ah and angry and the same time.
I found the book hard to read because it is a dry history book, the writing is one fact after another with little to no feeling. Author has a hard time sticking to a subject and is at times repetitive.
Ishi past away on March 25,1916

Taken from the back of the book. "Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship Predator. Loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy's shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels. But when Predator is damaged in combat, Grimm joins a team of Albion agents on a vital mission exchange for fully restoring his ship."
The beginning of the book pulled me into the fast paced book but it just did not keep my attention at all times, I had no problem putting it down. First problem, to much unnecessary details during the fight scenes, and describing things like ships equipment. Second problem, to many characters that are undeveloped. Last big problem, I also missing background stories, without them I felt like I was missing out of why things happened the way they did.
I do like Jim Butcher's adventures and writing style but for my taste needs to be edited a little more, book was longer than it needed to be.
Here is a couple of quotes from the book that I think set the tone.
"When Predator sailed onto war, she sang"
"The bloodstains on the walls glistened in the light of the little table's lumin crystals."
As much as I found this book tedious to read, I will finish the series.

Erma Bombeck was born on February 21, 1927 and passed away on April 22, 1996. I read her book When You Look Like Your Passport Photo, It's Time to Go Home in 1991 and found it to be very funny. I have one Family - The Ties that Bind...And Gag! on my TBR mountain. I only know her from these books. I found this book to very interesting and showing a woman that was underestimated, the critics hated her but women and a few men loved her. Her humor is sassy and straight forward. The book is not over the top with details, gives a good overall view of her life, work and home. I have only one complaint, the book started off with her death, did not like that. I am going to be adding more of her books to my TBR mountain and see if I can find the shows she was on. I would like to hear her voice now. I was not much into TV when she was around, I feel I missed something.

Julie Erickson asks a lot of questions after two deaths happen close together at The Rolling Hills Condominium Development. The more she learns the more she finds herself putting the puzzle together on what happens and placing herself in harm's way.
The book has a lot of characters but it is set in a HOA development so they are needed to show a complete picture of what goes on in the neighborhood. Cristine does a wonderful job of giving you just enough of the interactions of the people and their feelings of each other but not enough to have the Murder solved by the middle of the book. I did not see the ending coming, had me guessing with the twists and turns.

While Julie Erickson plans and prepares for the Craft fair at the The Rolling Hills Condominium Development a death happens in the community. Julie gets involved in the deaths when it is discovered that copies of a thirty year old photograph have been anonymously sent to the dead prior to their deaths and all of the people pictured in the photo. Julie is also in a new relationship with True Crime writer Grant Phillips.
Book moves along and has honest real life feel with a touch of romance between Julie and Grant which is not over the top and the interactions with her dog and her friends. I did have the bad person figured out before it was revealed but I did not see how it would happen and when it did, it happens fast and scary. Great ending. Can't wait for the next book.

The book is broken down into seven chapters, English, Literature, Math, Science, History, Geography, and General Studies.
Just to name a few things included in the book.
In the History chapter,George W. Bush(R,2001-2009) is the last President listed so is edition is dated but that is a easy fixed, just need to find the latest edition.
The Science chapter has the complete Periodic Table of the Elements. I never did get the entire table memorized but I passed Science so all it good.
In the Literature chapter, a list of Notable Authors.
If you or you have a kid in School, I highly recommend having a book like this on hand. It is a quick, easy to read and understand reference book.

Just what the title says, useless information. I love books like this. A few things I new but majority of the book I never heard. The one that stays with me is "Jack Nicholson appeared on the The Andy Griffith Show twice, in 1966 and 1967." Just wow, I did not know that, now I am going to have to find those episodes. This would be a great gift for that person who loves to test you, you know that type. They start with "Did you know...."
Quick read that educates.
