Nik Krasno | 19850 comments So, we have this nicely and roundly numbered year coming. Any resolutions/expectations?

J. Gowin | 7977 comments To go fishing and/or hunting at least once a month.

message 5: by Philip (new)

Philip (phenweb) Been following one NY resolution for years with great success. Don't make any...

message 6: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8071 comments Better to expect nothing than to be disappointed?

message 7: by Marie (new)

Marie | 643 comments I am not making any either as I want to surprise myself! LOL :)

message 8: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Personal goal. Write and Publish books #6 and #7 for my series in 2020.

This is definitely on my radar! I have that Metaframe war clock set on a timer in my head! Let the countdown begin! :-)

message 10: by Lizzie (new)

Lizzie | 2057 comments I am with Philip. I don't make any. Reality is I will or won't get around to doing something and NY's doesn't change those probabilities.

message 11: by Roxanna (last edited Jan 05, 2020 05:23PM) (new)

Roxanna López Finish translating my first book to Spanish, finish writing the first draft of my second book, enroll in a French language course, and back to the gym, plant tomatoes, eggplants and lavender before the end of January so I can harvest before the blistering Arabic Peninsula's summer kills all but the hardiest plants, finish furnishing and decorating my apartment in France and have one hell of a homewarming party in the spring.
And perhaps not the most important but definitely the most fun: play more dungeons and dragons.

message 12: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments 2020 offered a few surprises, but I hope all the resolutions were nonetheless meticulously accomplished :)
Is anything left for the next year?

message 13: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Liiv (victorialiiv) | 10 comments My olny plan for the next year, so far, is to finish my second book. As I am already deep in the writing process, it will not be hard to acomplish.

What about you, Nik? Anything special planned for the ext year?

Hope the 2nd will go well!
I have an operation looming once hospitals get permit to deal with non-urgent stuff. The rest will depend on how it goes and more generally - whether the virus is curbed, of course

message 15: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8071 comments Will be thinking of you, bud, and wishing you well.

message 16: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8071 comments My resolution is to have more patience. I struggle with that.

Merci, danke, whenever that happens. Have boundless patience and an excellent year! What's scarier: Biden or corona? :)

message 18: by Lizzie (new)

Lizzie | 2057 comments Like Philip, I don't make any resolutions on New Years.

If something about me needs modification, it will happen or not at some point during the year.

Anne Attias (anneattias) | 50 comments 1st email 2021 I received was to say my latest book is published on Amazon called Family Allsorts. Resolution/challenge this year is to try to understand/master how to promote/market my books. Writing flows but the complexity of getting known overwhelms me. I find it daunting especially when each application results in pages of instructions/advice. It is so time consuming too. Resolution is to try to persevere. All the best for 2021.

message 26: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments Well done on freshly - baked publication. Hope you'll master this marketing skill and have an otherwise prosperous year!

Congratulations, Anne, and best wishes for success with your new book. Marketing is always a challenge and very time consuming. I wish I had some useful advice. But I do wish you the best of luck with your book.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8071 comments Nik, here's a video of U2 showing them playing. Killer drummer, guitar player smoking and another guitarist playing keyboard. Really? Wow.

Congratulations on getting your book published! Nice way to begin the New Year. As the founder of an author's group of 17 published authors, I can assure you that you are not alone in trying to figure out how to promote yourself as an author and your book(s). The big five publishers put around $100K into any new author it debutes, and more $ into promoting that author until the author either captures an audience, or fails to a point they drop the novice (usually within about a two-week span). So, as authors we need to replace that with our own time and effort. Pretty daunting. The plus is we have more time than money. The minus is that we need a team of people to pull it off effectively. Our authors do what they can, hope for the best, anticipate realistically, and put their time and efforts where they most enjoy putting them--which is writing the next book … and they keep the day job until they retire. But there is nothing more exciting than hearing when an author makes it big. You could be our next shinning star. Never let go of the dream. But keep writing!

Graeme Rodaughan Graeme wrote: "Personal goal. Write and Publish books #6 and #7 for my series in 2020."

Well, my last goal died a miserable death. At the time book #6 was 'The Enforcer,' which I've wrapped into Book #7 'The Key of Ahknaton,' as a 28K word (novelette, or short novella).

In reality - Book #6 got written... Book #7 is a WIP, due later this year.

message 34: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Given the mess that my last goal became, I'm going to strike out in a new direction with a very bold and exciting goal for 2021.

First off, I'm going to devote myself to the practice of 'Humility,' and as a direct and immediate consequence, I will give up all my prior efforts at world domination.

I will use my remaining funds in my 'WorldDominion4Me,' account (jointly hosted at Goldman Sachs, and J.P. Morgan) to provide for the retrenchment of my many minions, followers and hangers on. They have all provided perfectly loyal service in aid of my many nefarious plans and have provided much comfort to me in my many travails and unfortunate reversals over the course of 2020. These brave and resolute souls will receive a handsome stipend to enable them to find new and useful careers in all manner of industries, such as ice estimation, ice cream tasting, and mime (well perhaps not mime - but I did advise them of this in the memo.)

As for my hairless cat, the delightful 'Pixie,' I will retain her services for the foreseeable future as she helps me sit upright when she's in my lap, which provides a wonderful posture to support the retention of my monocle. That damn sucker keeps slipping out whenever I bend over...

As for my most recent and brilliantly conceived (but poorly executed) endeavours, the attempt to gain absolute control of the Norwegian ice cream market appears to have gone astray. Much like my many efforts to corner the futures market for snow in Iceland, I must in the spirit of humility apportion at least the majority of the blame for my past and recent failures upon my good and esteemed self.

So, not wanting to take more of your precious time with my tales of woe, I shall make a short and simple summary of my goal for 2021.

I will become the most humble man in the world...

Good luck with conquering as many markets as you desire! The snow one is of especial interest to me. Once you become a snow king, I'll petition for a quota, as this type of precipitation is extremely rare in my area

Graeme, your most humble claim reminds my of my son who owns a border collie (BC1) who likes to chase balls, etc. However, over the Christmas holidays they looked after another border collie (BC2) for a neighbour who went away for vacation. Now, when they both go out to chase balls because it turns out BC2 is a little faster, BC1 refuses to chase unless she knows she will win.

I suspect the same has happened with your refusal to go after world domination - you know you will get beaten and you refuse to be publicly seen as beaten 😀😀😀

message 39: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments To raise the bet - my guess would be - he waived domination for triviality, in the view of obvious superiority :)

J. Gowin | 7977 comments A line from Shakespeare comes to mind:

"I thrice presented him a kingly crown,
which he did thrice refuse..."

Probably just a stray thought.

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

Funny, my New Year's resolution is tied in with one of the other threads. I'm aiming to pay for more things in cash rather than with debit card. I'm doing my bit to keep cash king :)

Although they try to reduce/outlaw cash settlements, I prefer cash too

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

Don't know if it's a global thing but in the UK many homeless people sell a magazine called the Big Issue, and get to keep some of the proceeds. The other day, I had to apologise to one of these chaps for not having any cash on me but he said not to worry because he now carries a card machine. Incredible :)

J. Gowin | 7977 comments Go hunting and/or fishing at least once a month.

Use some of my vacation time on actual R&R.

message 49: by Lizzie (new)

Lizzie | 2057 comments None. Never.

message 50: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8071 comments I quit making new year's resolutions maybe 30 years ago. Why bother when I'm the only one accountable, and I always give myself a break :-)

How about you, Nik, any resolutions?
