General Goodreads tips:
Goodreads groups are limited in features. You'll find most of what you need on your page:
- author, books and book covers: in the "add book/author" link, on top of your text box;
- how to add spoiler tags or good looking links or pictures: in "some html is ok" link, on top of your text box;
- for everything regarding Goodreads, you'll find a FAQ on your main page (bottom);
- if you're on smartphone, lots of features (like "edit") are not in the app but you'll find them on your explorer (Safari, Chrome, IE...).
Group Challenge Progress Bar:
- Create a bookshelf in the 'My Books' section by clicking on 'add shelf' on the left (for example, "around the year 2020")
- On the group challenge, enter the number of books you want to read for the AtY Reading Challenge
- Copy the shelf name after you created it (with dashes: around-the-year-2020). NOT THE URL!
- Paste the shelf name in the challenge box
- Click 'save'

FAQ's
Q: Do I have to read the prompts in order?
A: NOPE! You can tackle the challenge however you want to tackle it.
Q: When I post my plan, do I have to copy & paste the 2024 prompts in the message or are they automatically there?
A: You will have to copy and paste them into your plan.
Q: Can I change the prompt I want to assign for each book after I've already recorded it?
A: Yes! Feel free to treat this challenge like a puzzle. You are always welcome to move books around as you'd like.
Q: Are there any official hashtags that we can use when posting on Instagram/Listy/etc.?
A: Yes! #aroundtheyearin52books and #ATY2024 are two of our most popular!
Q: Can I only count one prompt per book?
A: If you're wanting to complete the official challenge, then yes, the goal is to read 52 books, with each book fulfilling one prompt. However, this is your challenge and you can tackle it however you see fit. If you don't think you can read 52 books, you can choose your favorite 26 topics or double up on prompts for each book... the choice is yours.
Q: I'm starting the challenge in the middle of the year. Can I use the books I've already read this year and fit them into the prompts?
A: Absolutely! As long as they were finished within the calendar year, they will count for the official challenge.
Q: What if I reallllly don't like a prompt on the list?
A: You can use a Wild Card! This will allow you to read any book you'd like and you can slot it in to that prompt.
Q: I'm seeing KIS and BIO around the page. What does that mean?
A: KIS (Keep It Simple) and BIO (Bring It On) are just ways for you to up the challenge (or make the challenge easier) for yourself. Some members have a hard time wrapping their head around a prompt, so the KIS and BIO list is there to help you have a different way of looking at the prompt. You don't get bonus points or anything for them... they are just there to help you see the prompts in a different light.

Whew! HELP!
Valerie, we’re working on revamping the group a bit. There will no longer be an A-Z section. We’re encouraging people to post book discussions here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
It is very similar to the previous A-Z section but just keep in mind that we’re striving for discussions rather than simple “I read this for x week”.
———
This is the new ‘help needed’ section. We archived the other one since it was starting to contain a lot of out-dated information :)

The compiled listopia thread was archived since they’re now in the weekly topics. But all archived posts are still at the bottom of the group:

You can open up the spreadsheet, go to the tab at the bottom that matches your name in alphabetical order (so if you're putting your plan as Bunny, you would go to the 2020 A-F tab), then add your name to the first open column. You should be able to edit the spreadsheet directly. If you're still having trouble, let me know!

If I choose to put a book in prompt 3 today, but feel in a couple weeks that it would work better for me in prompt 10, can I change this without ruining your statistics?

Definitely, Maggie. The stats are just there for fun and general information. There's no analysis that would be "ruined" by someone shifting their books to different prompts.
Every so often someone will take a look at the stats and make a comment on here about something interesting from those stats, but they're really just there for us all to enjoy the trends.

Oh, thanks for letting us know, Errlee. I'll check with Laura (our graphics guru) and get back to you!
For some reason, Imgur is making you confirm you’re 18 to view. If you click that then it should appear.
Regardless, I just uploaded a few different options here:

I have a question that is off- topic for our reading group, but am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I am looking to find a group that my 12 yo nephew can join on Goodreads, but will limit access to finding adult themed books. Do any of you know of a Goodreads link specifically for younger teen level readers?
Thanks for any input.
No, we have moved away from the group bookshelves because they were time consuming and not regularly used. We are encouraging everyone to look at the listopias for each prompt instead! They are listed on the weekly thread for each prompt.

That's a great question. #ATY2020 and #aroundtheyearin52books are two that I've seen most often, but we don't really have an official one.
I guess we can make those two official lol.

I think I might hashtag #ATY52 also, but I haven't posted any of my reading on insta yet this year

If you want to do the challenge multiple times, you can tackle each prompt more than once and use multiple books for the same prompt, if that is what you're asking.
If you're asking about using a book for only one prompt, the general answer is yes, each book can only be used for one prompt.
However, as always, the challenge is yours to tackle as you please, so feel free to make whatever concessions you need to make for it to work for you! (For example, people who can't read 52 books in a year, doubling up on prompts for each book could be a viable solution for them.)
Also, if you are Jenn C, I will move your list on the community spreadsheet to the (G-L) tab. Right now your list is on the (A-F) tab. We just go by whatever letter is first on the name you type!

Hi Sabra!
You can either create a plan in our planning folder (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...) by creating a new post and copying and pasting the list into your thread.
Alternatively, you can add your name to our community spreadsheet and track your books that way (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...)

JK, that's a great question. I'm not able to get on our mods group right now (Goodreads is acting up for me), but hopefully Bryony sees this and can get back to you on it.

That's your decision! If you'd like to discount "the", "a", and "an" at the beginning of the title, you may.

I see what you mean, Wendy. I edited some of the longer ones (took out subtitles, amended the sentences), but I'd like for people to still put whatever they would like to within the boxes (within reason, of course). But I'll encourage the people using the spreadsheet to condense their posts a bit.

Oh, thanks so much. Yeah, it's nice to have flexibility in the boxes but it's nice to be able to navigate too :)

Are you looking to make a list of books, or are you looking for an already made list to get inspiration?
On a browser, you can go to Browse --> Lists, then search 1950s to see lists that people have already put together.
This is a good one: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2...
If you're wanting to make your own list, you can go to Browse --> Lists, then click Create New List to start your own.

When I go to my goodreads home page, it just shows goodreads.com but it is my page...it has my current books, etc .
I am always signed in...I think maybe through facebook, and I don't even know how to sign in if I have to remember my password. yikes.
I can't find the pre-poll that is mentioned for today. It's not under polls and I don't see any link to it. Maybe it's not up yet?

Click on your profile pic in the upper right corner then click on the link labelled 'profile'. Copy and paste the url of that page. Hopefully that helps! This is just our way of preventing double-voters.

Here is the link: https://www.surveymoz.com/s/E7UPDO/
We'll be posting the prompt selections polls under this thread: 2021 Next Year's Challenge: Announcements
We don't want to spam the whole group with the constant announcements of suggestion threads, discussions, polls, results, etc; so we're trying to keep it just in the one thread. You can follow that discussion by clicking "Notify me when people comment" and then it will give you a notification whenever there's something new.

Sorry, I didn't notice that I had recently got the email with the link to the poll (because I was on GR the last hour or so!) Thanks!

We have a robust group with a lot of things going on, but this thread is a great place to start if you're looking to get involved with our group.
The ATY Official Challenge
First things first: Get acquainted with our Reading Challenge Prompts!
This challenge is the core of our group and is created through member votes each year.
Once you've decided to take on the challenge, create a plan in our Planning Folder.
This serves as a great place to track your progress and keep track of any books you may want to read for various prompts.
Need inspiration for a prompt? Check out our Weekly Topic Threads.
Each week has its own discussion, where people post possible books that would work. There's also helpful links and a link to our own listopia for each prompt. If you're stuck on what to read for a prompt, these threads are a great place to start.
Finally, snag a spot on our Community Spreadsheet. This spreadsheet tracks our group's reading stats, and helps us see which prompts are getting read!
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
Engage with the Community
New to the group? Post an introduction on our Rules and Member Introductions thread.
Dying to talk about what you're reading this month? Check out our Monthly Reading Discussions.
Read a great book and want to gush about it? Head over to our Book Discussion threads and let everyone know what they should read next.
Want to chat about life and things outside of books? OurOff Topic folder contains lots of discussions, including our Tell Us About Your Day thread, which is a great place to connect with the community.
Love tracking stats with the group? Our Group Reading Map tracks the setting of all of the books the group is reading for their individual ATY challenges!
Looking for a break from all of the reading? There's always something new going on in our Fun and Games folder.
Extra Challenges
Our group always has a Seasonal Challenge going on! Keep a look out for announcements regarding the newest seasonal challenges, especially for the Summer Seasonal Challenge, which comes with a prize!
We also have Quarterly Read-A-Thons that are announced on our Mod Announcement thread. These feature lots of games, a team challenge, and an individual challenge.
You may also see members discussing a Rejects Challenge, in which members who participated in the polling process create a side challenge for themselves of prompts that didn't make it on to the official ATY list. This is not required, but it is a fun way to challenge yourself above and beyond the official ATY challenge.
If you're taking on outside challenges this year, check out our Outside Challenges folder, where group members discuss challenges they have set for themselves outside of ATY.
