Debbie (debbiegregory) | 585 comments I've read the first chapter and really enjoyed it. I love the narrative and the layout. I would like to savour this and read a chapter a month, if I can wait!!

Jason (jasondenness) | 1877 comments I don't think I could ever do that. a chapter a month....I have no will-power :-)

I quite liked this when I read it and the structure of the book with a month for each of the walks is well thought through. I liked but didn't love the writing though, but it was missing that extra something. My review is here:

Rebecca | 161 comments I picked it up from the library last week but since then reading has ground to a bit of a halt , so I haven't started it yet but hope to get to it soon.

message 8: by Pamela (last edited Jan 15, 2020 05:15AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Pamela (bibliohound) | 359 comments I'm waiting for it to come in at my library as it has to come from another branch, hoping it will be here by the weekend

Pamela (bibliohound) | 359 comments I've now read this and really enjoyed it. I can see why it would be a bit ordinary for people who read a lot in this genre (like Paul!) For someone like me, who reads nature writing rarely but with great pleasure, it worked very well. It was warm-hearted, knowledgeable and interesting.

I liked the approach of the months of the year, and it also avoided lots of long lists of flora and fauna (my main gripe with nature writing). The passages about his relationship with his father were lovely, especially walking together, but I would have liked more of them.

Pat Morris-jones | 1373 comments I agree Pamela. I read it as an audiobook and loved it.

Yes, I can imagine it would work very well as an audiobook. Did the author read it himself?

Pat Morris-jones | 1373 comments He did. If you can find my review it explains the only criticism of it was all his bird sounds sounded the same, although I’m no twitcher.

Haha, yes I found your review Pat. Even so, they probably sounded better than how I read them in my head!

It all sounds brilliant if you use pirate voices.

Pat Morris-jones | 1373 comments Sept 19th is international “talk like a pirate” day. Sing like a pirate is probably allowed too, Jason.

Jason (jasondenness) | 1877 comments For me 2020 is speak like a pirate day. aaaarrrrrrrr!!!

Pat Morris-jones | 1373 comments Well shiver me timbers. I be livin in Cornwall so a wrecker be close to a pirate. Arrr.

Jason (jasondenness) | 1877 comments You can't be a pirate, can't have a wench on board as they are unlucky. :-)

Pat Morris-jones | 1373 comments Fair enough. I'll stay as a landlubber and wrecker then me hants. Watch out for false beacons in Cornwall as I lure e onto the rocks.
