The last events that happen in The Catcher in the Rye best represent the author's skill at writing. I feel that an ending says a lot about an author. The way Salinger ended the book, personally felt abrupt. Yet, it made sense. Holden believes he's going to leave in the beginning, but when Phoebe wants to leave with him, he decides to stay instead. When someone is around people they're comfortable with, they are their true selves. Here, Holden is snarky yet kind to his sister. It's one of the moments that Salinger best captures his character. He cares for Phoebe and now is not only thinking of himself. The whole book has been his journey on leaving his school and discovering himself. The ending shows Salinger's ability to wrap it up in a neat, nice bow.
