Reading German Books in 2020 discussion

A list of the great men in German literature :) Hope you enjoy them all. Personally, I would start with Death in Venice... essentially, I would read this backwards :) start at no. 6 and work your way up :)

Hi! I'm looking for the easiest - should I start with Hesse? I read Kafka's Die Verwandlung in a Routledge edition with useful notes in English, but there were some obscure words which, if it weren't for the edition, would have made it too tough to understand fully.
