Just answered you in my own Bingo thread haha. Not the standalone one, though I have my SF Tropes Bingo still. I'm doing this one passively, only filling it when I come across a book that fit but won't go out of my way to advance it :)

Katie K | 2600 comments It's gonna take me forever to read a good standalone book XD there are too many series in the works. Anyone have any suggestions? :D

message 14: by Virginie (last edited Feb 13, 2020 08:35AM) (new)

Virginie | 6109 comments Yay standalones!

The Goblin Emperor is great for political intrigues - almost no action. (a sequel has been announced but it stands on its own)

The Tangled Lands is actually a compilation of 4 novellas (by 2 different authors) in a shared world. It's pretty dark at times. The audiobook is a treat: Tim Gerard Reynolds and Kate Reading

Hollow Kingdom is pretty fun: zombie apocalypse as viewed by a pet crow. This lead me to research a little crows, and those animals are pretty damn smart :O

Sea of Rust is subversion of the "AI/robot apocalypse" as the book is from the point of view of a robot, after mankind has gone extinct. Some musings about what it means to be "human" (or a sentient individual in this case).

The Ten Thousand Doors of January was buddy-read recently. Beautiful writing (especially for a debut), is a bit YA in tone. It reads as a love-letter to escapism through books :)

The Gurkha and the Lord of Tuesday is incredibly fun. It's a novella so it's great if you're already swamped in books (but it's worth reading even if you're not :p). This book is just... crazy. Ancient arrogant djinn (+ pistachio-eating old soldier) VS AI.

Tooth and Claw is delightful. A Victorian drama, but with dragons.

City of Bones was one of my favorite reads of 2019, has inventive world-building. Martha Wells deserves more recognition (for her Fantasy novels, not just Murderbot).

Yes. There are more books set in the same world (I haven't read them) but the author herself calls it a standalone story :)

message 20: by Katie (new)

Katie K | 2600 comments @Bea ~ no way!!! Even more reason for me to pick this one up! It's on my tbr for a while :D

message 21: by Katie (last edited Mar 06, 2020 10:31AM) (new)

Katie K | 2600 comments From now on, when I start a series, I guess I have to check if there is a prior connecting series first ~ ala A Time of Dread lol
